In this study, we examined the time frame of reciprocal partner choice in the grooming interactions of captive mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) in order to test the hypothesis that the cognitive limitations of primates constrain the occurrence of reciprocation to short time intervals. In contrast to this hypothesis, mandrills groomed preferentially those individuals that groomed them more even when cases of immediate reciprocation were excluded from the analysis. These results show that mandrills were not limited to reciprocating grooming over short time intervals. It is proposed that a system of emotional bookkeeping may support the ability of primates to reciprocate over long time frames. Am. J. Primatol. 71:884–888, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The number of circulating CD4+ T cells constitutively expressing CD25 (T regulatory, Treg) and natural killer T (NK T) cells, the two major lymphocyte populations that help to maintain immune homeostasis, was studied in 22 unselected myasthenia gravis (MG) patients, 16 healthy subjects and 24 patients with cancer, the latter as a disease model of a relative immune suppression status. Treg cells were assessed according to their intermediate or high level of expression of CD25, i.e., CD25int and CD25bright, and to the expression of HLA-DR, CD62L, CD45RO and CD152. There were no differences in the number of NK T cells and CD4+CD25bright cells among the three series of individuals. MG patients and healthy subjects had also similar numbers of CD4+CD25int cells. However, the whole CD4+ cell compartment in MG patients was in an activated status, as indicated by the higher level of expression of CD152. By contrast, and consistent with a relative immune suppression status, cancer patients had higher numbers of CD4+CD25int cells and larger proportions of HLA-DR expressing CD4+CD25int and CD4+CD25bright cells. Immunomagnetically purified CD4+CD25+ cells from MG, healthy subjects and cancer patients were anergic and suppressed the proliferative response of other T cells. 相似文献

The achievement of Stage 6 object concept as an index of the representational capacity, was studied both in juveniles and
adults of two nonhuman primate species,Cebus apella andMacaca fascicularis. The general goal of the present investigation was to evaluate the real nature of the strategy adopted by subjects searching
an object in the invisible displacement task. To this purpose, the original Piagetian version of the invisible displacement
task was used modifying some parameters and employing additional tasks and analyses in order to differentiate representational
solutions from the nonrepresentational ones. With this method it was found that an adult cebus, but not macaques, solved the
invisible displacement task with the use of the mental representation. 相似文献

Grooming is the most common primate affiliative behaviour, and primates compete for accessing grooming partners. We studied a captive group of mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) to evaluate the role of different types of competitive interactions in shaping the distribution of grooming among females. Mandrill females preferentially groomed high‐ranking individuals, but low‐ranking females were less able to do so. Interference in others’ grooming and a (consequent) reluctance of low‐ranking females to access dominant group mates occurred frequently and contributed to the observed pattern of grooming distribution, while takeovers of grooming partners was relatively rare. Interference in others’ affiliation was possibly used to prevent the formation of revolutionary alliances. Difficulties in accessing individuals already engaged in grooming exerted a strong but rank‐independent effect on grooming interactions. These results highlight the role of competition in determining access to preferred social partners. 相似文献

Studies investigating the relation between allogrooming and social rank in capuchin monkeys (genus Cebus) have yielded inconsistent results. In this study, we investigated the relation between grooming, agonistic support, aggression and social rank in a captive group of tufted capuchin monkeys (C. apella). Differently from most previous studies, we based our analyses on a relatively large database and studied a group with known genealogical relationships. Tufted capuchin females did not exchange grooming for rank‐related benefits such as agonistic support or reduced aggression. Coherently with this picture, they did not groom up the hierarchy and did not compete for accessing high‐ranking grooming partners. It is suggested that a small group size, coupled with a strong kin bias, may make the exchange of grooming for rank‐related benefits impossible or unprofitable, thus eliminating the advantages of grooming up the hierarchy. We provide several possible explanations for the heterogeneity of results across capuchin studies that have addressed similar questions. Am. J. Primatol. 71:101–105, 2009. © 2008 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献
