Analysis of nine characteristics on 1,205 males and 932 females from 12 tribes or groups of tribes indicated a poor relationship between morphology and language, as well as moderate agreement with the variability expected considering geography only. Two samples in the Xingu area studied during an interval of half a century (1897-1947) showed remarkable similarity. Enterococcus faecalis 226, isolated from natural whey cultures utilized as starters in the manufacture of mozzarella cheese from water-buffalo milk, produces a bacteriocin designated enterocin 226NWC. The bacteriocin was isolated from culture supernatant fluids of the producer strain and was active against strains of the same species and Listeria monocytogenes, but not against useful lactic acid bacteria. Enterocin 226NWC is a protein with an apparent molecular weight of about 5800; it is relatively heat-stable and has a bactericidal mode of action. Listeria monocytogenes, growing in the presence of the enterocin 226NWC producer strain in broth and in reconstituted skim milk, was inhibited. 相似文献

Summary Studies in 772 children and their mothers living in Porto Alegre, Brazil, disclosed three rare G-6-PD phenotypes. The first, observed in a dark mulatto, is probably identical to a variant previously found in Northeastern Brazil and was named Gd Minas Gerais-like; a white boy of German ancestry showed what seems to be Seattle-like; and a white man of Portuguese ancestry presented a previously undescribed variant that is being called Gd Porto Alegre. The allele responsible for Gd Minas Gerais may be more prevalent in Brazilian populations than was previously thought. Its estimated frequency in 214 black males from Porto Alegre is 0.005. 相似文献

Summary Blood samples from 509 Macushi and 623 Wapishana Amerindians of Northern Brazil and Southern Guyana have been analyzed with reference to the occurrence of rare variants and genetic polymorphisms of the following 25 systems: (i) Erythrocyte enzymes: acid phosphatase-1, adenosine deaminase, adenylate kinase-k, carbonic anhydrase-1, carbonic anhydrase-2, esterase A1,2,3, esterase D, galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, nucleoside phosphorylase, peptidase A, peptidase B, phosphoglucomutase 1, phosphoglucomutase 2, phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphohexoseisomerase, triosephosphate isomerase and (ii) Serum proteins: albumin, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, hemoglobin A, hemoglobin A2 and transferrin. Fifteen different rare variants were detected, involving 11 of these systems. In addition, a previously undescribed variant of ESA1,2,3 which achieves polymorphic proportions in both these tribes is described. Excluding this variant, the frequency of rare variants is 1.1/1000 in 12510 determinations in the Macushi and 4.7/1000 in 15 396 determinations in the Wapishana. The ESA1,2,3, polymorphism was not observed in 382 Makiritare, 232 Yanomama, 146 Piaroa, 404 Cayapo, 190 Kraho and 112 Moro. Irregularities in the intratribal distribution of this polymorphism in the Macushi and Wapishana render a decision as to the tribe of origin impossible at present. Data on 31 genetic systems were obtained for 421 individuals belonging to the Arara, Araweté, Mundurucu, and Jamamadi tribes of northern Brazil. The Jamamadi depart farthest, and the Mundurucu least, from South American Indian averages. These data are analyzed together with those of 24 other Amazonian groups. Genetic distances and corresponding dendrograms indicate a cluster of 14 related tribes living north of the Amazon river. These genetic results show only a modest correlation with linguistic and geographic relationships among these groups. 相似文献

Summary The Gm types of 515 inhabitants of Belém and 395 inhabitants of Porto Alegre, Brazil were studied in an attempt to quantitatively estimate ethnic parental contributions. The people from Belém can be characterized as 24% black, 22% Indian, and 54% Caucasian. The Porto Alegre blacks seem to have inherited as much as 53% of their genes from Caucasian ancestors, while the whites living there have inherited 8% of their genes from African ancestors. The admixture values obtained for Belém are very similar if just the Gm system is considered or it plus seven other loci are considered, emphasizing the high efficiency of the Gm markers in such analyses. 相似文献
