Some meteorological conditions associated with forest fires in Galicia (Spain)

The present paper offers data on the effect of certain meteorological parameters on the outbreak of forest fires in Galicia (Spain). In a day-to-day analysis, the values of the stability of the air column and the saturation deficit at the lower levels are related to the number of fires occurring in the following 24 h.     

Potential long-acting contraceptive agents: esters of testosterone with alkoxy- and halogeno-substituted carboxylic acids

The chemical synthesis and physical data of several new esters of testosterone (17 beta-hydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one), which contain either a halogeno or an alkoxy substituent in the acid chain, are reported.     

Autonomous replication sequences in an extrachromosomal element of a pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica.

Entamoeba histolytica possesses a 24.5 kilobase plasmid-like molecule which encodes for the organism's ribosomal RNAs. Sequence analysis of this extrachromosomal element revealed the presence of AT rich sequences which show homology to the origin of replication of other lower eucaryotes. An 802 bp fragment containing these sequences was cloned into a yeast shuttle vector lacking the origin of replication and the construct tested for its ability to replicate autonomously in yeast. Mitotic stability tests as well as evidence for plasmid maintenance indicate that the transformed cells contained self-replicating episomes and not stably integrated molecules. The nucleotide sequence of this ARS-containing fragment is presented.     

Long-acting contraceptive agents: Norethisterone esters of arylcarboxylic acids

The synthesis of esters of norethisterone (17α-ethynyl-17β-hydroxy-estr-4-en-3-one) with acids containing a benzene ring is described, two methods of esterification being compared in terms of yield and convenience. The activities of these esters as long-acting contraceptive agents have been evaluated.

The synthesis of nine new esters of norethisterone (17 alpha-ethynyl-17 beta-hydroxyestr-4-en-3-one) is described, with the esterifying acids bearing an acetylenic or olefinic function in a chain of eight or nine carbon atoms, for evaluation as long-acting contraceptive agents.     

Aspergilosis En Colombia

Resumen Se presentan 15 casos de aspergilosis recolectados en diferentes ciudades del país. Doce fueron casos autopsiados. Los tres restantes se refieren a pacientes en quienes se efectuó una lobectomía pulmonar superior derecha por aspergiloma gigante intracavitario. En los doce primeros existía una enfermedad básica que había alterado seriamente el estado general del paciente; once de ellos habían recibido antibióticos, cinco habían recibido esteroides, y dos, agentes citotóxicos. Se cree que, tanto el estado general del paciente, como la administración de dichas drogas, favorecieron la infección micótica. De los tres casos con aspergiloma intracavitario gigante, se cree que, en uno, la micosis se implantó en una caverna tuberculosa cicatrizada. En los otros dos, la cavidad era un bronquio localmente dilatado y se consideró que no existía una infección tuberculosa.ElAspergillus posee un amplio espectro de patogenicidad. Se le puede observar en lesiones que van desde una localización intrabronquial, acompañada de mínima o nula reacción inflamatoria, hasta casos en los cuales existen lesiones pulmonares necrotizantes con diseminación hematógena a otros órganos (sistema nervioso central, hígado, riñón).     

Comparative effects of trichothecene mycotoxins on bovine platelet function: Acetyl T-2 toxin,a more potent inhibitor than T-2 toxin

The effects of the trichothecene mycotoxins (acetyl T-2 toxin, T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, palmityl T-2 toxin, diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS), deoxynivalenol (DON), and T-2 tetraol) on bovine platelet function were examined in homologous plasma stimulated with platelet activating factor (PAF). The mycotoxins inhibited platelet function with the following order of potency: acetyl T-2 toxin > palmityl T-2 toxin = DAS > HT-2 toxin = T-2 toxin. While T-2 tetraol was completely ineffective as an inhibitor, DON exhibited minimal inhibitory activity at concentrations above 10×10^?4M. The stability of the platelet aggregates formed was significantly reduced in all mycotoxin treated platelets compared to that of the untreated PAF controls. It is suggested that the increased sensitivity of PAF stimulated bovine platelets to the more lipophilic mycotoxins may be related to their more efficient partitioning into the platelet membrane compared to the more hydrophilic compounds.     

Nucleic acid scanning-by-hybridization of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli isolates using oligodeoxynucleotide arrays.

Nucleic acid scanning by hybridization (NASBH) is a non-electrophoretic typing strategy that uses gridded oligonucleotides to reproducibly characterize arbitrarily amplified nucleic acid sequences. Membrane-bound arrays of terminally-degenerate oligonucleotides were hybridized to DNA amplification fingerprinting (DAF) products from enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 isolates. Numerical and cluster analysis of 64 isolates, selected by DAF to represent a single dominant amplification type identified 14 hybridization types. Results show that NASBH is a powerful alternative for the identification of closely related bacteria, can be used successfully in epidemiological studies, and holds potential in general nucleic acid diagnostics.
