Abstract:  New material of a long-snouted dyrosaurid has been discovered in the Paleocene of Morocco. It consists of a well-preserved skull with embedded mandible and four dorsal vertebrae. The particularly elongate snout, proportionally the longest of all known dyrosaurids, allows precise identification of this material as Atlantosuchus coupatezi Buffetaut, 1979 a , and presentation of an emended diagnosis for this species previously known only from a mandibular symphysis. A phylogenetic analysis of the dyrosaurids indicates a close relationship between A. coupatezi and Rhabdognathus . It also confirms a previous hypothesis that Congosaurus is distinct from Hyposaurus . It is more closely related to Atlantosuchus than Hyposaurus . The analysis also allows palaeobiogeographic interpretations to be made. Dyrosaurids ranged from North Africa to other areas. They were rare during the Maastrichtian and endemic to each continent at this time. Competition with large marine reptiles, such as mosasaurs, limited their dispersal during the Late Cretaceous. The disappearance of these rivals during the 'K-T crisis' enabled their diversification and widespread dispersal during the Paleocene, with the same genera present on several continents.  相似文献

1. The hyporheic zone plays a key role in hydrological exchange and biogeochemical processes in streambed sediments. The clogging of sediments caused by the deposition of particles in the bed of streams and rivers can decrease sediment permeability and hence greatly affect hyporheic microbial processes. 2. The main objective of this study was to determine the influence of sediment clogging on hyporheic microbial processes in three French rivers (the Usses, Drôme and Isère). In each river, microbial abundance and activity were studied at three depths (10, 30 and 50 cm) in the sediment at one unclogged (high porosity) and one clogged site (low porosity). 3. The results showed that the sediment clogging had inconsistent effects on microbial processes in the three rivers. Increases (Usses) or decreases (Drôme and Isère) in both aerobic and anaerobic processes were detected at the clogged sites compared to unclogged sites. These results suggest that microbial changes because of the sediment clogging are mainly mediated by the residence time of water within the hyporheic sediments. 4. A single model predicting the effect of clogging on hyporheic microbial processes cannot be applied generally to all rivers because the degree of clogging creates heterogeneous effects on flow rates between surface and interstitial waters. As a consequence, the influence of heterogeneous clogging on surface water–hyporheic exchanges needs to be evaluated by water tracing and hydraulic modelling to determine the links between microbial processes and hydraulic heterogeneity induced by clogging in hyporheic sediments.  相似文献

Abstract: We report here additional remains referred to Egatochoerus jaegeri from the late Eocene locality of Ban Mark in the Krabi basin, Thailand. The new material described, comprising upper and lower cheek teeth, deciduous premolars and partial cranial remains, makes E. jaegeri the best‐documented Eocene representative of Old World Suoidea at present. Detailed study and comparison of their cheek teeth structure reveal a homogeneity of the molar crest and groove patterns of Old World and New World Palaeogene suoids.  相似文献

1. This study focused on phytoplankton production in Lake Tanganyika. We provide new estimates of daily and annual primary production, as well as growth rates of phytoplankton, and we compare them with values published in former studies.
2. Chlorophyll- a (chl- a ) in the mixed layer ranged from 5 to 120 mg chl- a  m−2 and varied significantly between rainy and dry seasons. Particulate organic carbon concentrations were significantly higher in the south basin (with 196 and 166 mg C m−3 in the dry and the rainy season, respectively) than in the north basin (112 and 109 mg C m−3, respectively).
3. Carbon : phosphorus (C : P) ratios varied according to season. Phosphorus limitation seemed to occur more frequently than nitrogen limitation, especially during the rainy season. Severe P deficiencies were rare.
4. Measured particulate daily primary production ranged from 110 to 1410 mg C m−2 day−1; seasonal contrasts were well marked in the north basin, but less in the south basin, where primary production peaks occurred also in the rainy season. Estimates of annual primary production, based on daily primary production calculated from chl- a and water transparency, gave values lower than those reported in previous studies. Picophytoplankton accounted on average for 56% of total particulate production in the south basin during the wet season of 2003.
5. Phytoplankton growth rates, calculated from primary production, ranged from 0.055 to 0.282 day−1; these are lower than previously published values for Lake Tanganyika.  相似文献

Synonymy is considered as a great problem for diversity characterization and further applications, especially for biological control success with regard to the accurate identification of natural enemies. The present study focuses on two synonymy cases of natural enemies, belonging to the family Phytoseiidae, the genus Neoseiulella, specifically five species of this genus: Neoseiulella tiliarum, Neoseiulella formosa, Neoseiulella aceri, Neoseiulella squamiger, and Neoseiulella aceris. Morphological and molecular analyses [12S rRNA, cytochrome b (Cytb) mitochondrial (mt)DNA, internal transcribed spacer DNA] were applied. First, the results obtained support the synonymy of N. tiliarum and N. formosa. Second, because morphological differences (solenostomes occurrence) were observed for the first time between the type material of N. aceris and N. squamiger, the present study does not provide sufficient evidence to synomymize these two species and further analyses are required. Lastly, we assume that N. squamiger and N. aceri are synonyms. However, three groups of specimens, including N. aceri and N. squamiger, were identified by two mitochondrial DNA genes (12S rRNA and Cytb mtDNA). Therefore, the present study highlights the problems encountered when using only mitochondrial genes to diagnose species. The great mtDNA variations observed appear to reflect population differentiation (linked to plant support). This is the first time that such high intraspecific differentiation is be observed within the family Phytoseiidae. Further experiments, such as cross‐breeding and microsatellite DNA marker analyses, are planned to characterize gene flow and reproductive isolation levels within this species. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 323–344.  相似文献

Abstract La Réunion Island has the largest area of intact vegetation of the islands in the Mascarene archipelago. Biological invasions are the primary threat to biodiversity in the intact habitats of the island (those not already transformed by agriculture and urbanization). Our study aimed to identify areas to prioritize in managing invasive alien plants for biodiversity conservation. We used extensive surveys of 238 distinct untransformed areas on La Réunion to define the current distribution patterns of all invasive species. Using expert knowledge, we compiled maps of the current distribution of the 46 most widespread/important invasive plants at the habitat scale (identified according to vegetation structure). Data from 440 botanical relevés for the 20 most threatening invasive alien plant species across the island and climatic envelope models were used to derive climatic suitability surfaces; these were used to map potential distributions for these species. More than 10 species invade 16.7% of the remaining habitat. Five habitat types are invaded by 25 or more species, and eight have fewer than 10 invasive alien plant species. Cluster analysis based on presence/absence of species in the 18 habitat types produced eight groups of species that invade particular habitats. Potential distribution models show that some species have invaded large parts of their potential range (e.g. Fuchsia magellanica, Furcraea foetida, Hiptage benghalensis), whereas others have the potential to increase their range substantially (e.g. Clidemia hirta, Strobilanthes hamiltonianus, Ulex europaeus). Management implications are identified for both groups. Three broad groups of habitats were identified: (i) intact habitats with a low level of invasion (e.g. subalpine shrubland); (ii) moderately invaded habitats with varying levels of intactness (ranging from windward submountain rainforest to the Acacia heterophylla forest); and (iii) habitats with little remaining intact area and high levels of invasion (e.g. lowland rainforest). The anatomy of the spectacular sabretoothed carnivorans has been studied many times. Their behavioural and biomechanical implications are well known in adults, but not in juvenile individuals, which are poorly represented in the fossil record. This work reports on a newly discovered Hoplophoneini (Nimravidae Nimravinae) of 5–6 months of age, which represents the earliest and one of the most complete juvenile crania discovered. We discuss and compare the juvenile anatomy of Palaeogene nimravids relative to that of other mammals, especially other carnivorans including the Miocene nimravids (i.e. Barbourofelinae). We also discuss the ontogenetic development of this individual and other sabretoothed predators, which provides important data for reconstructing the biology of these extinct predators. Our study of the juvenile anatomy of the Hoplophoneini reveals an original association of basicranial features: the ectotympanic rotates away from the cranium earlier than in other mammals, which may be an additional autapomorphy distinguishing the Palaeogene Nimravidae from other Carnivora; within Palaeogene Nimravidae, at a similar ontogenetic stage, there is a major difference in development and maximum ventral extension of ossification of the caudal entotympanic; in contrast to the Miocene nimravid Barbourofelis, there is no strong relationship between the eruption of the upper canines and the development of other sabretoothed features (especially the mandibular flange) in the individual described. These results confirm the conclusions of recent studies which suggested that Palaeogene Nimravidae (Nimravinae) and Miocene Nimravidae (Barbourofelinae) are not closely related. Muscular reconstruction and biomechanical models also confirmed that juvenile individuals were probably not able to kill or hunt any prey. They may have fed on carcasses, eating muscles by using the incisors, and associated with a pulling or twisting action of neck. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. The assessment of developmental stability in hybrids can provide valuable information in the study of species formation because it allows an evaluation of the degree of incompatibility of genetic systems that control developmental processes. The present study assessed the impact of two hybridization events, assumed to have occurred at different times, on developmental instability in the ground beetle Carabus solieri . Developmental instability was estimated in 678 individuals from 27 populations from the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) levels of four morphological traits: the tibia length of middle and hind legs, which are functional structures, and the length and the proximal width of the hind wings, which are vestigial and thus nonfunctional structures. Significant variations of FA levels between populations were shown only for the wing width. For this trait, FA levels in hybrids were higher than in their parental entities for both hybridization events, indicating a significant divergence of the gene systems controlling development between the parental entities in the two hybridization cases. As expected, wing traits exhibited FA levels at least three times higher than leg trait. Three fragmentary maxillae and an isolated upper molar from the Upper Eocene locality of Wai Lek (Krabi Basin, South Thailand) belonging to the small anthracotheriid Siamotherium krabiense display strongly abnormal morphologies that are particularly unusual among the dental anomalies recorded in both extant and fossil mammals. Variation and atavism can be ruled out, and the other hypothetical origins of these anomalies, particularly the occurrence of odontomes and inbreeding, are discussed. ABSTRACT. The alternating myxosporean and actinosporean stages of the myxozoan parasitc Myxobolus cerebralis (Hofer 1903) from its salmonid fish and aquatic oligochaete hosts, respectively, were compared for sequence homology of the small subunit (18S) ribosomal RNA genes. A 99.8% similarity between the sequences of these two stages was substantially greater than that of M. cerebralis compared to two other Myxobolus sp. from salmonid fish. Our results are the first molecular evidence confirming the alternating stages initially described by Wolf and Markiw [25] for the life cycle of M. cerebralis but found in two different taxonomic classes (Myxosporea and Actinosporea) are indeed forms of the same organism. Sequencing of rRNA genes of the actinosporean stage followed by development of specific primers for DNA amplification of the myxosporean stage, as in our study, should be applied to solve other myxozoan life cycles. Additionally, these approaches will in the future provide useful diagnostic reagents for the detection and study of this important group of fish pathogens.  相似文献
