ABSTRACT In many vertebrates size is one of the most influential and variable individual characteristics and a strong determinant of reproductive success. Body size is generally density dependent and decreases when intraspecific competition increases. Frequent and long-distance movements increase energy expenditures and, therefore, may also influence body size, particularly in highly mobile species. Caribou (Rangifer tarandus, also known as reindeer) exhibit tremendous variation in size and movements and thus represent an excellent candidate species to test the relationships between body size, population size, and movements. We analyzed body measurements of adult female caribou from 7 herds of the Québec-Labrador Peninsula, Canada, and we related their morphology to population size, movements, and annual ranges. The herds represented 3 ecotypes (migratory, montane, and sedentary). Ecotypes and herds differed in size (length), shape (roundness), and movements. The sedentary ecotype was larger and moved 4 to 7 times less than the migratory ecotype in the 1990s. At the start of a demographic growth period in the early 1960s, migratory caribou from the Rivière-George (hereafter George) herd had longer mandibles than caribou of the sedentary ecotype. Mandible length in the George herd declined in the 1980s after rapid population growth, while individuals performed extensive movements and the herd's annual range increased. Migratory caribou then became shorter than sedentary caribou. After the George herd decline in the 1990s, mandible length increased again near levels of the 1980s. Caribou from the migratory Rivière-aux-Feuilles herd later showed a similar decline in mandible length during a period of population growth, associated with longer movements and increasing annual range. We hypothesize that the density-dependent effect observed on body size might have been exerted through summer habitat degradation and movement variations during herd growth. Our study has 2 important implications for caribou management: the distinctiveness of different populations and ecotypes, and the correlations between population trajectories and changes in body condition and habitat.  相似文献

We present a phylogeographic study of the New Zealand and Australian intertidal chiton Sypharochiton pelliserpentis that was conducted to ascertain levels of population connectivity and to investigate the effect of previously hypothesized general phylogeographic boundaries. The analysis incorporated both cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 sequence data (approximately 700 bp) and RFLP data from 29 populations around New Zealand, and from one Australian population, for a total of N = 472. The major population structure observed was a strong disjunction between northern and southern populations (ΦST = 0.47), with the genetic breaks located at Cloudy/Clifford Bay and Farewell Spit, at the northern tip of the South Island. This finding corresponds with a common phylogeographic barrier observed in a number of other marine invertebrates, highlighting its significance and ubiquity. A third barrier to gene flow was identified between Spirits Bay and Ahipara, around the northern tip of the North Island. All three of these areas that exhibit significant population disjunctions have strong near‐shore upwelling along with water current movement offshore, and these features are prevalent during the time of year when S. pelliserpentis spawns. That these seasonal hydrographic patterns contribute to the population structuring of S. pelliserpentis is supported by comparison with other phylogeographic studies of marine invertebrates, where the strength of this barrier seems to correlate with spawning season. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 552–563.  相似文献

Because of its remoteness and mid-latitude position, New Zealand lacks access to the tropical climates that might have ensured straightforward survival for frost-sensitive species during glacial times. Nevertheless, the New Zealand lowland flora retains a substantial complement of plants sourced in the tropics. While there have been extinction pulses for elements of the frost-sensitive flora under glacial/stadial regimes, the surviving remnants have been able to recolonize large areas of habitat during successive warm climate periods. Refugia for such species in stadial New Zealand are likely to have been localized and ecologically suboptimal. To examine these relationships we have applied chloroplast DNA sequence data to the investigation of phylogeographical pattern for five endemic species of Metrosideros subg. Metrosideros , a wide-ranging group of mostly frost-sensitive woody plants in New Zealand. The results of this research verify the location of two generally mooted stadial refugia for the country and provide support for the existence of a third. A simple pattern of chloroplast haplotype diversity was recorded in extra-refugial areas, compared with a greater complexity in the vicinity of the identified refugia. This pattern was independently repeated in both main islands. The proposed refugia correspond to contemporary localities of high average winter temperatures. The sharing of chloroplast haplotypes between the different species of Metrosideros examined suggests that there has been a history of repeated hybridization and introgression for these plants, possibly initiated by periods of refugial confinement.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 399–412.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to investigate whether the P concentration in the roots or the shoots controls the growth and citrate exudation of cluster roots in white lupin (Lupinus albus L). Foliar P application indicated that low P concentration in the shoots enhanced cluster‐root growth and citrate‐exudation rate more so than low P concentration in the roots. In the split‐root study, the P concentration in the shoots increased with increased P supply (1, 25 or 75 mmol m?3 P), to the ‘privileged’ root halves. Roots ‘deprived’ of P invariably had the same low P concentrations, whereas those in the ‘privileged’ roots increased with increasing P supply (1, 25 or 75 mmol m?3 P). Nevertheless, the proportion of the total root mass allocated to cluster roots, and the citrate‐exudation rates from the root halves were always similar on both root halves, irrespective of P supply, and decreased with increasing shoot P concentrations. Peak citrate exudation rates from developing cluster roots were significantly faster from cluster roots on the ‘deprived’ root halves when the ‘privileged’ half was exposed to 1 mmol m?3 P as compared with 25 or 75 mmol m?3 P. The possibility that changes in the concentrations of P fractions in the root halves influenced cluster‐root growth and citrate exudation was discounted, because there were no significant differences in insoluble organic P, ester‐P and inorganic P among all ‘deprived’ root halves. The results indicate that cluster‐root proportions and citrate exudation rates were regulated systemically by the P status of the shoot, and that P concentrations in the roots had little influence on growth and citrate exudation of cluster roots in L. albus.  相似文献

Germination of freshly collected seeds of three sympatric herbaceous species native to fire‐prone environments in south‐western Australia was significantly improved through the application of novel combinations of dry heat, gibberellic acid, smoke water and dry afterripening. For fresh seeds, combinations of dry heat, gibberellic acid and/or smoke water resulted in >80% germination in Austrostipa elegantissima (Poaceae) and Stylidium affine (Stylidaceae) seeds and >60% germination in Conostylis candicans (Haemodoraceae) seeds, compared with <10% germination of control seeds. For fresh seeds, two broad germination patterns were observed in response to smoke water: nil – low germination for both control and smoke water‐treated seeds (A. elegantissima and S. affine); and a significant smoke response (35%) compared with control seeds (1%) (C. candicans). During afterripening, high germination for A. elegantissima seeds was achieved following 3 months storage of seeds at equilibrium relative humidities of 23–75%, but seeds stored at 5–13% equilibrium relative humidities took 6–36 months to achieve similar levels of germination. Germination of C. candicans seeds also increased after 3 months storage, to >60% at each equilibrium relative humidity and further increases over time were slight. For S. affine seeds >60% germination was achieved only after 36 months storage at 50% equilibrium relative humidity. Seeds from all three species were smoke‐responsive at some point, but the interaction/effects of afterripening on the smoke response varied significantly between species. This study highlights an apparent effect of seed dormancy status on response to smoke and a surprisingly high level of ecological variation in pre‐germination requirements (cues) for these co‐occurring species that may relate to variation(s) in microsite selection forces operating on the soil seed bank of the different species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Many land-trust organizations attempt to preserve habitat that will benefit specific wildlife species or suites of species. With limited resources available, these organizations need tools to prioritize preservation efforts. One such organization, the Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy (KINHC), is attempting to preserve wildlife habitat in the face of ever-increasing property values and development pressure on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, USA. We modified an existing bobcat (Lynx rufus) habitat suitability index model, which focuses on suitability of habitats for food, by including components for concealment cover and den habitat. We developed a windows-based computer program that calculates modified habitat suitability index (MHSI) values that can easily be imported into a Geographic Information System for display in map form, allowing for frequent reevaluation of site-specific habitat suitability as land-cover patterns change. We used locations collected from radiocollared bobcats to assess validity of the food and cover components of the MHSI. Bobcats used areas identified as highly suitable for food more than expected during nocturnal time periods (G52 = 640.9, P < 0.001) and areas identified as highly suitable for cover more than expected during diurnal time periods (G37 = 1,194.0, P < 0.001). Our approach for evaluating bobcat habitat suitability will allow KINHC to identify parcels that likely provide the greatest ecological benefit to bobcats and their associated wildlife community. Our approach could be altered to consider habitat requirements of other species, or multiple species, at virtually any location for which fine-scale land-cover data are available.  相似文献

The mechanisms that determine population structure in highly mobile marine species are poorly understood, but useful towards understanding the evolution of diversity, and essential for effective conservation and management. In this study, we compare putative sperm whale populations located in the Gulf of Mexico, western North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and North Sea using mtDNA control region sequence data and 16 polymorphic microsatellite loci. The Gulf of Mexico, western North Atlantic and North Sea populations each possessed similar low levels of haplotype and nucleotide diversity at the mtDNA locus, while the Mediterranean Sea population showed no detectable mtDNA diversity. Mitochondrial DNA results showed significant differentiation between all populations, while microsatellites showed significant differentiation only for comparisons with the Mediterranean Sea, and at a much lower level than seen for mtDNA. Samples from either side of the North Atlantic in coastal waters showed no differentiation for mtDNA, while North Atlantic samples from just outside the Gulf of Mexico (the western North Atlantic sample) were highly differentiated from samples within the Gulf at this locus. Our analyses indicate a previously unknown fidelity of females to coastal basins either side of the North Atlantic, and suggest the movement of males among these populations for breeding.  相似文献

Climate change is threatening tropical reefs across the world, with most scientists agreeing that the current changes in climate conditions are occurring at a much faster rate than in the past and are potentially beyond the capacity of reefs to adapt and recover. Current research in tropical ecosystems focuses largely on corals and fishes, although other benthic marine invertebrates provide crucial services to reef systems, with roles in nutrient cycling, water quality regulation, and herbivory. We review available information on the effects of environmental conditions associated with climate change on noncoral tropical benthic invertebrates, including inferences from modern and fossil records. Increasing sea surface temperatures may decrease survivorship and increase the developmental rate, as well as alter the timing of gonad development, spawning, and food availability. The broad latitudinal distribution and associated temperature ranges of several pantropical taxa suggest that some reef communities may have an in‐built adaptive capacity. Tropical benthic invertebrates will also show species‐specific sublethal and lethal responses to sea‐level rise, ocean acidification, physical disturbance, runoff, turbidity, sedimentation, and changes in ocean circulation. In order to accurately predict a species' response to these stressors, we must consider the magnitude and duration of exposure to each stressor, as well as the physiology, mobility, and habitat requirements of the species. Stressors will not act independently, and many organisms will be exposed to multiple stressors concurrently, including anthropogenic stressors. Environmental changes associated with climate change are linked to larger ecological processes, including changes in larval dispersal and recruitment success, shifts in community structure and range extensions, and the establishment and spread of invasive species. Loss of some species will trigger economic losses and negative effects on ecosystem function. Our review is intended to create a framework with which to predict the vulnerability of benthic invertebrates to the stressors associated with climate change, as well as their adaptive capacity. We anticipate that this review will assist scientists, managers, and policy‐makers to better develop and implement regional research and management strategies, based on observed and predicted changes in environmental conditions.  相似文献

A kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A Chev) Liang et Ferguson cv Hayward) pulp was made using fruit harvested immature to minimize the presence of aroma volatiles. This pulp was modified by incorporating sugars and acids to simulate kiwifruit with a range of Brix and acid levels. Using sensory evaluation, flavor acceptability was found to increase with increasing Brix. As expected, perceived " sweetness intensity" increased with increasing Brix. Acidity did not influence flavor acceptability. At high Brix, sugars were able to suppress the effects of variations in acidity. Changes in Brix did not influence " flavor intensity", suggesting that aroma volatiles may be important contributors to kiwifruit flavor intensity.  相似文献
