The goal of this study was to compare the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of plutonium-239 alpha particles and GSM 900 modulated mobile phone (model Sony Ericsson K550i) radiation in the Allium cepa test. Three groups of bulbs were exposed to mobile phone radiation during 0 (sham), 3 and 9 h. A positive control group was treated during 20 min with plutonium-239 alpha-radiation. Mitotic abnormalities, chromosome aberrations, micronuclei and mitotic index were analyzed. Exposure to alpha-radiation from plutonium-239 and exposure to modulated radiation from mobile phone during 3 and 9 h significantly increased the mitotic index. GSM 900 mobile phone radiation as well as alpha-radiation from plutonium-239 induced both clastogenic and aneugenic effects. However, the aneugenic activity of mobile phone radiation was more pronounced. After 9 h of exposure to mobile phone radiation, polyploid cells, three-groups metaphases, amitoses and some unspecified abnormalities were detected, which were not registered in the other experimental groups. Importantly, GSM 900 mobile phone radiation increased the mitotic index, the frequency of mitotic and chromosome abnormalities, and the micronucleus frequency in a time-dependent manner. Due to its sensitivity, the A. cepa test can be recommended as a useful cytogenetic assay to assess cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields.  相似文献

Most published studies of thermoregulatory responses of mice to LPS involved a stressful injection of LPS, were run at a poorly controlled and often subneutral ambient temperature (T(a)), and paid little attention to the dependence of the response on the LPS dose. These pitfalls have been overcome in the present study. Male C57BL/6 mice implanted with jugular vein catheters were kept in an environmental chamber at a tightly controlled T(a). The relationship between the T(a)s used and the thermoneutral zone of the mice was verified by measuring tail skin temperature, either by infrared thermography or thermocouple thermometry. Escherichia coli LPS in a wide dose range (10(0)-10(4) microg/kg) was administered through an extension of the jugular catheter from outside the chamber. The responses observed were dose dependent. At a neutral T(a), low (just suprathreshold) doses of LPS (10(0)-10(1) microg/kg) caused a monophasic fever. To a slightly higher dose (10(1.5) microg/kg), the mice responded with a biphasic fever. To even higher doses (10(1.75)-10(4) microg/kg), they responded with a polyphasic fever, of which three distinct phases were identified. The dose dependence and dynamics of LPS fever in the mouse appeared to be remarkably similar to those seen in the rat. However, the thermoregulatory response of mice to LPS in a subthermoneutral environment is remarkably different from that of rats. Although very high doses of LPS (10(4) microg/kg) did cause a late (latency, approximately 3 h) hypothermic response in mice, the typical early (latency, 10-30 min) hypothermic response seen in rats did not occur. The present investigation identifies experimental conditions to study LPS-induced mono-, bi-, and polyphasic fevers and late hypothermia in mice and provides detailed characteristics of these responses.  相似文献

(1) Administration of arginine vasopressin (AVP) in the ventral septal area (VSA) or intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) is thought to attenuate lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or prostaglandin (PG) E2 fevers in rabbits and rats by acting on the V1 receptor. (2) We found that the fever response of rabbits to intravenous LPS (200 ng/kg) or intra-VSA PGE2 (500 ng) was not attenuated but enhanced by intra-VSA AVP (5 μg); a pharmacological analysis showed that this fever-enhancing effect was mediated by the V2 receptor. (3) The febrile response of rats to intraperitoneal (50 μg/kg) or i.c.v. (100 ng) LPS was unaffected by i.c.v. AVP (2.5–100 ng). (4) The role of AVP in fever should be re-examined.  相似文献

In the southern forest steppe, the upland oak forests on loamy dark grey soils, which have the automorphic mode of water supply, usually endure droughts during the second half of the vegetative season due to the creation and use by biogeocenoses of some moisture reserves into soil and groundwater (GW), which are accessible to deep layers of root systems of trees. Two shallow sandy horizons interlaying moraine loams of the Dnieper glaciation at altitudes of 120 and 143 m above sea level serve as collectors and transporters of GW, the table of which is 10-15 m lower than the surface of the watershed plateaus and terraces. By autumn, trees desiccate subsoil horizons to the capillary fringe of GW. In early spring, the moisture of dried horizons is restored. The reserves of GW permit the upland oak forests to preserve rather high values of predawn leaf water potential such as Ψ PD ≥ ?0.8 MPa despite the decrease in water potential of soil at a depth of 0-2 m of the soil layer to a value of Ψ S ≈ ?2.4 MPa.  相似文献

Cryopegs, lenses of hypersaline unfrozen soil or water within permafrost, are a model for astrobiology, since free water can only be present on cryogenic bodies and planets in the form of brine. In this paper the diversity of aerobic halophilic-psychrotrophic microorganisms from an Alaskan cryopeg (Barrow Cape) were studied and described for the first time. This cryopeg is characterized by a constant subzero temperature (–7°C), high salinity (total mineralization is about 120 g/L) and isolation from external influences for a geologically significant period of time. Our study has revealed a large number of microorganisms capable of growth at low temperature (4°C) in a wide range of salinities from 5 to 250 g/L of NaCl, the latter being 3 times higher than the natural salt concentration of the Alaskan cryopeg. The microorganisms identified are comprised of four major phyla: Actinobacteria (genera Brevibacterium, Citricoccus, Microbacterium), Firmicutes (genus Paenibacillus), Bacteroidetes (genus Sphingobacterium), and Proteobacteria (genus Ochrobactrum).  相似文献

Many areas of the Arctic are simultaneously affected by rapid climate change and rapid industrial development. These areas are likely to increase in number and size as sea ice melts and abundant Arctic natural resources become more accessible. Documenting the changes that have already occurred is essential to inform management approaches to minimize the impacts of future activities. Here, we determine the cumulative geoecological effects of 62 years (1949–2011) of infrastructure‐ and climate‐related changes in the Prudhoe Bay Oilfield, the oldest and most extensive industrial complex in the Arctic, and an area with extensive ice‐rich permafrost that is extraordinarily sensitive to climate change. We demonstrate that thermokarst has recently affected broad areas of the entire region, and that a sudden increase in the area affected began shortly after 1990 corresponding to a rapid rise in regional summer air temperatures and related permafrost temperatures. We also present a conceptual model that describes how infrastructure‐related factors, including road dust and roadside flooding are contributing to more extensive thermokarst in areas adjacent to roads and gravel pads. We mapped the historical infrastructure changes for the Alaska North Slope oilfields for 10 dates from the initial oil discovery in 1968–2011. By 2010, over 34% of the intensively mapped area was affected by oil development. In addition, between 1990 and 2001, coincident with strong atmospheric warming during the 1990s, 19% of the remaining natural landscapes (excluding areas covered by infrastructure, lakes and river floodplains) exhibited expansion of thermokarst features resulting in more abundant small ponds, greater microrelief, more active lakeshore erosion and increased landscape and habitat heterogeneity. This transition to a new geoecological regime will have impacts to wildlife habitat, local residents and industry.  相似文献
