In this work we apply a mathematical model of photosynthesis to quantify the potential for photosynthetic life in the very Early Archean oceans. We assume the presence of oceanic blockers of ultraviolet radiation, specifically ferrous ions. For this scenario, our results suggest a potential for photosynthetic life greater than or similar to that in later eras/eons, such as the Late Archean and the current Phanerozoic eon.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of mesotocin and vasotocin was studied in the brain of the lizard Gekko gecko with antisera specific for either peptide. Both mesotocinergic and vasotocinergic perikarya are found in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus, whereas vasotocinergic neurons are exclusively present in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and in a cell group of the rhombencephalon. The distributional pattern of the mesotocinergic fibers corresponds closely to that of the vasotocinergic fibers. However, throughout the entire brain the mesotocinergic innervation is less dense than the vasotocinergic innervation. In order to determine the profile of arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites synthesized by bovine embryos during early developmental stages, embryos collected from superovulated beef cattle (days 6 through 17) were incubated with AA and its metabolites were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography and radioimmunoassay (RIA). Embryos harvested and cultured before day 12 of the estrous cycle metabolized AA primarily to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), whereas, those harvested on day 13 of the cycle metabolized AA to both PGE2 and PGF2 alpha. Furthermore, embryos collected after day 15 of the cycle metabolized AA to PGI2 in addition to PGE2 and PGF2 alpha. In view of the luteotropic properties that have been attributed to PGE2 and the vasodilatory effect of PGI2, this transitional change in prostaglandin synthesis during early stages of embryonic development may be a part of the mechanism by which the embryo exerts a luteotropic effect leading to maternal recognition of pregnancy and by which the conceptus begins preparing for subsequent implantation.  相似文献

Summary Bothriocephalus specimens from one Ctenopharyngodon idella (O+) were fixed using three different techniques and the scolex morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The scolices were compared with figures of the five species of Bothriocephalus and one species of Schyzocotyle previously described from cyprinid fishes. The taxonomic history of the Bothriocephalus species parasitizing cyprinid fish is reviewed. It is concluded that there is only one Bothriocephalus species parasitizing cyprinid fishes, and that continued use should be made of the name B. acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934. ac]19840326  相似文献

Adult Bothriocephalus acheilognathi were incubated in solutions containing 0 (control), 0.1, 1.0, 10.0 and 100 micrograms praziquantel per ml (0, 10(2), 10(3), 10(4) and 10(5) micrograms l-1) of 0.9% saline for 5, 15 and 60 min at a temperature of 18 degrees C. The worms contracted immediately upon being placed in the drug. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed considerable tegumental damage particularly in the neck region. Vacuolization and 'bubbling' of the tegument occurred in all of the drug solutions tested. Exposure to drug concentrations of more than 1.0 micrograms ml-1 (10(3) micrograms l-1) praziquantel for 15 min or greater resulted in many of the 'bubbles' bursting and releasing their contents to the exterior. Mature proglottides were distorted and had occasional large swellings resulting in the mass expulsion of eggs. Praziquantel had no ovicidal activity. Exposure to drug concentrations of 100 micrograms (10(5) micrograms l-1) praziquantel per ml saline for 24 h was not lethal to the worms.  相似文献

A comprehensive analysis of human alloimmune cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) specific for the HLA-A2 antigen identified 11% of HLA-A2 positive cells as outliers. In total, 11 unrelated serologically indistinguishable, but distinguishable by cell-mediated lympholysis (CML) HLA-A2 positive outlier cells were identified. The outlier cells could be subdivided in two subgroups according to reactivity patterns obtained with CTLs directed against the HLA-A2 antigen of outlier cells and their inhibitory capacity in specific competitive inhibition experiments. Thus, the serologically defined HLA-A2 specificity can be divided into at least three subtypes using CTLs specific for the HLA-A2 antigen. Moreover, CTLs specific for an HLA-A2 subtype could be induced when responder cells expressed a different HLA-A2 subtype antigen. On the basis of several family studies, we conclude that the subtype HLA-A2 antigens are inherited in a codominant way.  相似文献

Reperfusion of rat kidney submitted to temporal ischaemia induces a decrease in glutathione content. Lipid peroxidation is not detected in kidney homogenates but microsomes obtained after periods of reperfusion longer than 60 minutes show increased malondialdehyde values correlated with high oxygen consumption and superoxide free radical generation. Microsomes obtained from kidneys submitted to 15 or 60 minutes of reperfusion are resistant to NADPH-induced lipid peroxidation but after 120 minutes of reperfusion an increased lipid peroxidative response is observed. Although the mechanism of the protection found in microsomes against the induction of oxidative stress in the first 60 minutes of reperfusion is unknown, it is postulated that this subcellular fraction plays an important role in the oxidative stress observed after longer periods of reperfusion.  相似文献

The extreme phenotypic variability recognized among the species of Gracilaria has highlighted the need for the application of refined methods to help solve taxa identifications. In Chile, there still exists uncertainty about the exact number of Gracilaria species. Our investigations are centered on DNA analyses of morphotypes collected from different geographical locations, namely Lenga and Isla Santa María, Region VIII (36°00 S to 38°00 S), and Maullín, Region X (39°30 S to 43°40 S). These two regions of Chile are considered as areas of confluence of G. chilensis, G. verrucosa, and a species of Gracilariopsis. In this study four morphotypes, from a natural bed located in Maullín, were analyzed for RFLP of plastid DNA and the results compared with data of four morphotypes from a bed in Lenga. The DNA banding patterns from each enzyme digest were identical irrespective of morphotypes and/or locations. In an attempt to unravel the nature of the morphological differences found among Lenga and Maullín morphotypes, RAPD analyses of nuclear DNA were also performed; however, no polymorphism has been found yet. Accurate estimates of forest biomass stocks and fluxes are needed to quantify global carbon budgets and assess the response of forests to climate change. However, most forest inventories consider tree mortality as the only aboveground biomass (AGB) loss without accounting for losses via damage to living trees: branchfall, trunk breakage, and wood decay. Here, we use ~151,000 annual records of tree survival and structural completeness to compare AGB loss via damage to living trees to total AGB loss (mortality + damage) in seven tropical forests widely distributed across environmental conditions. We find that 42% (3.62 Mg ha−1 year−1; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.36–5.25) of total AGB loss (8.72 Mg ha−1 year−1; CI 5.57–12.86) is due to damage to living trees. Total AGB loss was highly variable among forests, but these differences were mainly caused by site variability in damage-related AGB losses rather than by mortality-related AGB losses. We show that conventional forest inventories overestimate stand-level AGB stocks by 4% (1%–17% range across forests) because assume structurally complete trees, underestimate total AGB loss by 29% (6%–57% range across forests) due to overlooked damage-related AGB losses, and overestimate AGB loss via mortality by 22% (7%–80% range across forests) because of the assumption that trees are undamaged before dying. Our results indicate that forest carbon fluxes are higher than previously thought. Damage on living trees is an underappreciated component of the forest carbon cycle that is likely to become even more important as the frequency and severity of forest disturbances increase.  相似文献
