Inhibitory pathways are an essential component in the function of the neocortical microcircuitry. Despite the relatively small fraction of inhibitory neurons in the neocortex, these neurons are strongly activated due to their high connectivity rate and the intricate manner in which they interconnect with pyramidal cells (PCs). One prominent pathway is the frequency-dependent disynaptic inhibition (FDDI) formed between layer 5 PCs and mediated by Martinotti cells (MCs). Here, we show that simultaneous short bursts in four PCs are sufficient to exert FDDI in all neighboring PCs within the dimensions of a cortical column. This powerful inhibition is mediated by few interneurons, leading to strongly correlated membrane fluctuations and synchronous spiking between PCs simultaneously receiving FDDI. Somatic integration of such inhibition is independent and electrically isolated from monosynaptic excitation formed between the same PCs. FDDI is strongly shaped by I(h) in PC dendrites, which determines the effective integration time window for inhibitory and excitatory inputs. We propose a key disynaptic mechanism by which brief bursts generated by a few PCs can synchronize the activity in the pyramidal network.  相似文献

Recently three biogeographical units were identified along the Chilean coast (the Magellanic Province, an Intermediate Area, and the Peruvian Province), however few studies have focused on the factors and dynamic processes that formed these spatial units (e.g. Rapoport's rule and its causal mechanisms). In this study we used benthic polychaetes of the Chilean coast to evaluate patterns of latitudinal distribution and species richness, and the existence of the three main biogeographical provinces described for the Chilean coast. Additionally, we evaluated the latitudinal Rapoport effects and geometric constraint as a null hypothesis explaining the species richness distribution.
We found that benthic polychaete diversity increased towards southern latitudes. The cluster and ordination (non-metric MultiDimensional Scaling, nMDS) analyses of the distribution data, presented only two statistically significant (bootstrapping techniques) biogeographic provinces along the Chilean coast, with a break occurring between 41° and 42°S. While, our results did not support a latitudinal Rapoport effect, they did support the view that latitudinal Rapoport effects are a local phenomenon, occurring only for the Northeastern Pacific marine taxa. The relationship between latitudinal range extent and mean latitude indicated the existence of two hard boundaries at either extreme of the Chilean coast, limiting the geographical ranges of the species. However, geometric constraints tested using a Monte Carlo simulation approach showed a weak level of mid-domain effect on species richness. Finally, we propose that geometric constraint together with the geomorphology and historical characteristics of the Chilean coast explain the biogeographical patterns of benthic polychaete taxa in Chile.  相似文献

Fluorescence polarization, P, of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene was studied in Escherichia coli B/r. Modification of nutritional conditions was not compensated by homeoviscous adaptation, demonstrated to exist for temperature variations. Cell diameter, which is known also to vary with nutrition but not with temperature, was found to be positively correlated with 1/P, and may therefore be regulated by membrane lipid order and fluidity.  相似文献

In this review, our current understanding of the species Escherichia coli and its persistence in the open environment is examined. E. coli consists of six different subgroups, which are separable by genomic analyses. Strains within each subgroup occupy various ecological niches, and can be broadly characterized by either commensalistic or different pathogenic behaviour. In relevant cases, genomic islands can be pinpointed that underpin the behaviour. Thus, genomic islands of, on the one hand, broad environmental significance, and, on the other hand, virulence, are highlighted in the context of E. coli survival in its niches. A focus is further placed on experimental studies on the survival of the different types of E. coli in soil, manure and water. Overall, the data suggest that E. coli can persist, for varying periods of time, in such terrestrial and aquatic habitats. In particular, the considerable persistence of the pathogenic E. coli O157:H7 is of importance, as its acid tolerance may be expected to confer a fitness asset in the more acidic environments. In this context, the extent to which E. coli interacts with its human/animal host and the organism''s survivability in natural environments are compared. In addition, the effect of the diversity and community structure of the indigenous microbiota on the fate of invading E. coli populations in the open environment is discussed. Such a relationship is of importance to our knowledge of both public and environmental health.  相似文献

For territorial organisms, recognition of familiar individuals can reduce the frequency and intensity of aggressive encounters (‘dear enemy’ phenomenon), stabilize social systems, and reduce the cost of territory maintenance. Here, we investigated the behavioural events displayed during contests between familiar and unfamiliar individuals in the lizard Liolaemus tenuis (Liolaemidae), a species in which males are territorial. The behaviours recorded were attack, warning, evasion, and submission, and the latencies to the first aggressive (attack or warning) behaviour. Additionally, we assessed the ability of individuals to remember a familiar conspecific after a period without social interaction. Individual males reduced and delayed aggressive behaviour directed towards socially familiar individuals compared with unfamiliar ones. These results suggest that males distinguished between familiar and unfamiliar conspecific males and are in agreement with the ‘dear enemy’ phenomenon. Other behaviours were similar in the contests between familiar and unfamiliar individuals. Recognition of familiar conspecifics was lost after 20 d without social interactions. This may be relevant for interactions with floater males or with neighbours that lose their territory and subsequently attempt to fight for their ex‐neighbour's territory.  相似文献

The changes in the levels of microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) during advanced embryonic stages, neonatal and adult organisms reflect the importance of these cytoskeletal proteins in relation to the morphogenesis of the central nervous system. MAP-1B is found in prenatal brains and it appears to have the highests levels in neonatal rat brains, being a developmentally-regulated protein. In this research, a fast procedure to isolate MAP-1B, as well as MAP-2 and MAP-3 from neonatal rat brains was designed, based on the differential capacity of poly L-aspartic acid to release MAPs during temperature-dependent cycles of microtubule assembly in the absence of taxol. The high molecular weight MAP-1B was recovered in the warm supernatants after microtubular protein polymerization in the presence of low concentrations of polyaspartic acid. Instead, MAP-2 and a 180 kDa protein with characteristics of MAP-3 remained associated to the polymer after the assembly. Further purification of MAP-1B was attained after phosphocellulose chromatography. Isolation of MAP-2 isoforms together with MAP-3 was achieved on the basis of their selective interactions with calmodulin-agarose affinity columns. In addition, MAP-2 and MAP-3 were also purified on the basis of their capacities to interact with the tubulin peptide -II (422–434) derivatized on an Affigel matrix. However, MAP-1B did not interact with the -II tubulin fragment, but it showed interaction with the Affigel-conjugated -I (431–444) tubulin peptide. The different MAPs componentes were characterized by western blots using specific monoclonal antibodies. A salient feature of neonatal rat brain MAP-3 was its interactions with site-directed antibodies that recognize binding epitopes on the repetitive sequences of tau and MAP-2. Abstract: The modulation by adenosine analogues and endogenous adenosine of the electrically evoked release of [3H]acetylcholine ([3H]ACh) was compared in subslices of the three areas of the rat hippocampus (CA1, CA3, and dentate gyrus). The mixed A1/A2 agonist 2-chloroadenosine (CADO; 2–10 µM) inhibited, in a concentration-dependent manner, the release of [3H]ACh from the three hippocampal areas, being more potent in the CA1 and CA3 areas than in the dentate gyrus. The inhibitory effect of CADO (5 µM) on [3H]ACh release was prevented by the A1 antagonist 1,3-dipropyl-8-cyclopentylxanthine (DPCPX; 50 nM) in the three hippocampal areas and was converted in an excitatory effect in the CA3 and dentate gyrus areas. The A2A agonist CGS-21680 (30 nM) produced a greater increase of the evoked release of [3H]ACh in the CA3 than in the dentate gyrus areas, whereas no consistent effect was found in the CA1 area or in the whole hippocampal slice. The excitatory effect of CGS-21680 (30 nM) in the CA3 area was prevented by the adenosine receptor antagonist 3,7-dimethyl-1-propargylxanthine (10 µM). Both adenosine deaminase (2 U/ml) and DPCPX (250 nM) increased the evoked release of [3H]ACh in the CA1 and CA3 areas but not in the dentate gyrus. The amplitude of the effect of DPCPX and adenosine deaminase was similar in the CA1 area, but in the CA3 area DPCPX produced a greater effect than adenosine deaminase. It is concluded that the electrically evoked release of [3H]ACh in the three areas of the rat hippocampus can be differentially modulated by adenosine. In the CA1 area, only A1 inhibitory receptors modulate ACh release, whereas in the CA3 area, both A2A excitatory and A1 inhibitory adenosine receptors modulate ACh release. In the dentate gyrus, both A1 inhibitory and A2A excitatory adenosine receptors are present, but endogenous adenosine does not activate them.  相似文献

Irradiation ofArabidopsis with ultraviolet (UV) light resulted in intensity- and wavelength-dependent increases in the levels of a small family of UV-absorbing flavonoids, which accumulate in the aerial parts of the plants. A gradient of sensitivity to UV-B radiation is described in the different leaves of developingArabidopsis plants whereby the earliest formed leaves become damaged by UV-B faster and more extensively than later formed leaves. This UV-sensitivity gradient tightly parallels differences in constitutive as well as UV-induced levels of flavonoid accumulation among the various leaves, suggesting a direct role of flavonoids in protection against damage by UV radiation. The level of accumulated flavonoids, both constitutive and UV-induced, in each leaf appear to be dependent on the specific developmental state of each leaf as well as the overall developmental state of the plant. The UV-mediated flavonoid response, along with the observed UV-induced damage, appear not to be systemic inArabidopsis but restricted very closely to the irradiated areas of leaves.I am deeply indebted to Robert Fischer and Bob Buchanan for providing access to their laboratories and for their invaluable help without which this work could not have been realized.
