Greater sage-grouse populations have decreased steadily since European settlement in western North America. Reduced availability of brood-rearing habitat has been identified as a limiting factor for many populations. We used radio-telemetry to acquire locations of sage-grouse broods from 1998 to 2012 in Strawberry Valley, Utah. Using these locations and remotely-sensed NAIP (National Agricultural Imagery Program) imagery, we 1) determined which characteristics of brood-rearing habitat could be used in widely available, high resolution imagery 2) assessed the spatial extent at which sage-grouse selected brood-rearing habitat, and 3) created a predictive habitat model to identify areas of preferred brood-rearing habitat. We used AIC model selection to evaluate support for a list of variables derived from remotely-sensed imagery. We examined the relationship of these explanatory variables at three spatial extents (45, 200, and 795 meter radii). Our top model included 10 variables (percent shrub, percent grass, percent tree, percent paved road, percent riparian, meters of sage/tree edge, meters of riparian/tree edge, distance to tree, distance to transmission lines, and distance to permanent structures). Variables from each spatial extent were represented in our top model with the majority being associated with the larger (795 meter) spatial extent. When applied to our study area, our top model predicted 75% of naïve brood locations suggesting reasonable success using this method and widely available NAIP imagery. We encourage application of our methodology to other sage-grouse populations and species of conservation concern.  相似文献

Mate recognition for the leafhopper Graminella nigrifrons(Forbes) occurs when a male spontaneously emits a multisectional vibrational calling song to which females respond by emitting simple pulses. Significant differences were found among males in the duration, number of chirps, and chirp rate within sections of the song and the total song. Repeatability (proportion of total variation due to differences among males) of call features ranged from very low (0.04 for total chirps in song) to high (0.67 for section 3 chirp rate). However, song modification and playback experiments revealed that the variation in the measured song features was not important in determining whether a female will respond. Rather, female response depended only on the presence of two of the three types of pulses which comprise a chirp. These essential pulses were found within chirps of all call sections that contain chirps. Manipulation of chirp rates from 0.58 to 2.70 times the normal rate did not affect female response, nor did changing the period of silence between the essential pulse types from 0.25 to 1.75 times the normal period. These results suggest that components of the male calling song function in mate recognition but are not used by females to discriminate among conspecific males.  相似文献

We determined the action spectra of the photophobic responses as well as the phototactic response in Dunaliella salina (Volvocales) using both single cells and populations. The action spectra of the photophobic responses have maxima at 510 nm, the spectrum for phototaxis has a maximum at 450–460 nm. These action spectra are not compatible with the hypothesis that flavoproteins are the photoreceptor pigments, and we suggest that carotenoproteins or rhodopsins act as the photoreceptor pigments. We also conclude that the phototactic response in Dunaliella is an elementary response, quite independent of the step-up and step-down photophobic responses. We also determined the action spectra of the photoaccumulation response in populations of cells adapted to two different salt conditions. Both action spectra have a peak a 490 nm. The photoaccumulation response may be a complex response composed of the phototactic and photophobic responses. Blue or blue-green light does not elicit a photokinetic response in Dunaliella.Diagrams of the optical set-ups used for measuring the responses at the single-cell level and of the plans for building the phototaxometer described in this paper are available to the interested readerWe thank Mr. M. Effects of the antiozonant EDU, N-[2-(2-oxo-1-imidazolidinyl) ethyl]-N'-phenylurea, on the content and composition of foliar lipids in snapbean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Bush Blue Lake 290) before and after a single, acute ozone (O3) exposure were assessed. Pretreatment with EDU conferred protection against O3-induced necrosis and losses of glycerolipids and chlorophyll. Systemic treatment of snapbean plants with EDU did not significantly alter membrane lipids in the first trifoliate leaf. Leaves of untreated controls had lost ca 50% of both galacto- (GL) and phospholipids (PL) by the end of a 3 h exposure to 0.4 μl l−1 O3. A decline in the ratio of mono- to di-galactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG/DGDG) was associated with the loss of GL, and a decline in the ratio of linoleic to linolenic acid (18:2/18:3) was associated with the loss of PL in untreated controls. EDU-treated plants showed no significant loss of foliar GL and PL. The MGDG/DGDG ratio declined only slightly, and the 18:2/18:3 ratio in PL increased during O3 exposure of EDU-treated seedlings. The level of total membrane sterols, including free sterols (FS), acylated steryl glycosides (ASG) and steryl glycosides (SG), did not change during O3 exposure of either treated or untreated plants. However, in the controls the proportions of ASG and SG increased at the expense of FS, and the ratio of stigmasterol/sitolsterol increased in FS and SG. In EDU-treated plants, a relatively small increase in SG was offset by a decrease in FS, and there was no change in the stigmasterol/sitosterol ratio in ASG, SG or FS. The results indicate that EDU may confer tolerance to O3 through induction of enzyme systems involved in the elimination of activated oxygen species and free radicals.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether exposure of plants to ozone (O3) increased the foliar levels of glucose, glucose sources, e.g., sucrose and starch, and glucose-6-phosphate (G6P), because in leaf cells, glucose is the precursor of the antioxidant, L-ascorbate, and glucose-6-phosphate is a source of NADPH needed to support antioxidant capacity. A further objective was to establish whether the response of increased levels of glucose, sucrose, starch and G6P in leaves could be correlated with a greater degree of plant tolerance to O3. Four commercially available Spinacia oleracea varieties were screened for tolerance or susceptibility to detrimental effects of O3 employing one 6.5 hour acute exposure to 25O nL O3 L-1 air during the light. One day after the termination of ozonation (29 d post emergence), leaves of the plants were monitored both for damage and for gas exchange characteristics. Cultivar Winter Bloomsdale (cv Winter) leaves were least damaged on a quantitative grading scale. The leaves of cv Nordic, the most susceptible, were approximately 2.5 times more damaged. Photosynthesis (Pn) rates in the ozonated mature leaves of cv Winter were 48.9% less, and in cv Nordic, 66.2% less than in comparable leaves of their non-ozonated controls. Stomatal conductance of leaves of ozonated plants was found not to be a factor in the lower Pn rates in the ozonated plants. At some time points in the light, leaves of ozonated cv Winter plants had significantly higher levels of glucose, sucrose, starch, G6P, G1P, pyruvate and malate than did leaves of ozonated cv Nordic plants. It was concluded that leaves of cv Winter displayed a higher tolerance to ozone mediated stress than those of cv Nordic, in part because they had higher levels of glucose and G6P that could be mobilized during diminished photosynthesis to generate antioxidants (e.g., ascorbate) and reductants (e.g., NADPH). Elevated levels of both pyruvate and malate in the leaves of ozonated cv Winter suggested an increased availability of respiratory substrates to support higher respiratory capacity needed for repair, growth, and maintenance.Abbreviations ADPG-PPiase ADPglucose pyrophosphorylase - ASC L-ascorbic acid - APX ascorbate peroxidase - Ce CO2 concentration in air in the measuring cuvette during photosynthesis measurements - Ci CO2 concentration in the leaf intercellular spaces during photosynthesis measurement - Chl chlorophyll - DHA dehydroascorbic acid - DHA reductase dehydroascorbate reductase - DHAP dihydroxyacetone phosphate - GAP glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate - Gluc glucose - GR glutathione reductase - Gsw stomatal conductance with units as mmol H2O m-2 s-1 - GSSG oxidized glutathione - GSH reduced glutathione - G1P glucose-1-phosphate - G6P glucose-6-phosphate - G6P dehydrogenase glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase - 6PG 6-phosphogluconate - 6PG dehydrogenase 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase - F6P fructose-6-phosphate - FBP fructose-1,6-bisphosphate - MAL malate - MDHA reductase monodehydroascorbate reductase - PE post-emergence - PEP phosphoenolpyruvate - PGA 3-phosphoglycerate - Pi orthophosphate - PYR pyruvate - Pn net CO2 photoas-similation in leaves - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density with units of mol photons m-2 s-1 - PPRC pentose phosphate reductive cycle - RuBP ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate - rubisco ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase - SLW specific leaf weight - TCA cycle tricarboxylic acid cycle - Triose-P DHAP+GAP  相似文献

Interactive effects of seven years of compaction due to wheel traffic and tillage on root density, formation of arbuscular mycorrhizae, above-ground biomass, nutrient uptake and yield of corn (Zea mays L.) were measured on a coastal plain soil in eastern Alabama, USA. Tillage and soil compaction treatments initiated in 1987 were: 1) soil compaction from tractor traffic with conventional tillage (C,CT), 2) no soil compaction from tractor traffic with conventional tillage (NC,CT), 3) soil compaction from tractor traffic with no-tillage (C,NT), and, 4) no soil compaction from tractor traffic with no-tillage (NC,NT). The study was arranged as a split plot design with compaction from wheel traffic as main plots and tillage as subplots. The experiment had four replications. In May (49 days after planting) and June, (79 days after planting), root biomass and root biomass infected with arbuscular mycorrhizae was higher in treatments that received the NC,NT treatment than the other three treatments. In June and July (109 days after planting), corn plants that received C,CT treatment had less above-ground biomass, root biomass and root biomass infected with mycorrhizae than the other three treatments. Within compacted treatments, plants that received no-tillage had greater root biomass and root biomass infected with mycorrhizae in May and June than plants that received conventional tillage. Corn plants in no-tillage treatments had higher root biomass and root biomass infected with mycorrhizae than those in conventional tillage. After 7 years of treatment on a sandy Southeastern soil, the interactive effects of tillage and compaction from wheel traffic reduced root biomass and root biomass infected with mycorrhizae but did not affect plant nutrient concentration and yield. ei]J H Graham  相似文献

Commercial ruthenium red is often purified by a single recrystallization as described by Luft, J.H. (1971) Anat Rec 171, 347–368, which yields small amounts of material having an apparent molar extinction coefficient of 67,400 at 533 nm. A simple modification to the procedure dramatically improves the yield, allowing crystallization to be repeated. Three times recrystallized ruthenium red has an apparent extinction coefficient of 85,900, the highest value reported to date. Both crude and highly purified ruthenium red can be shown to inhibit reverse activity of the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter (uncoupled mitochondria), provided that care is taken to minimize and account for Ca2+ release through the permeability transition pore. Crude ruthenium red is 7–10 fold more potent than the highly purified material in this regard, on an actual ruthenium red concentration basis. The same relative potency is seen against forward uniport (coupled mitochondria), however, the I50 values are 10 fold lower for both the crude and purified preparations. These data demonstrate unambiguously that the energy state of mitochondria affects the sensitivity of the Ca2+ uniporter to ruthenium red preparations, and that both the forward and reverse reactions are subject to complete inhibition. The data suggest, however, that the active inhibitor may not be ruthenium redper se, but one or more of the other ruthenium complexes which are present in ruthenium red preparations.Abbreviations CCP carbonyl cyanide p-chlorophenylhydrazone - CSA cyclosporin A - Hepes 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazine ethanesulfonic acid  相似文献

The infectivities of Steinernema carpocapsae, S. glaseri, S. scapterisci, and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora to Japanese beetle larvae, Popillia japonica, and house cricket adults, Acheta domesticus, were compared using external exposure and hemocoelic injection. Only H. bacteriophora and S. glaseri caused high P. japonica mortality after external exposure. When nematodes were injected, P. japonica had a strong encapsulation and melanization response to all species except S. glaseri. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and S. carpocapsae were able to overcome the immune response, but S. scapterisci was not. All species except S. scapterisci were able to kill and reproduce within the host. Only S. scapterisci and S. carpocapsae caused A. domesticus mortality after external exposure. When nematodes were injected, A. domesticus had a strong immune response to all species except S. scapterisci. Steinernema carpocapsae effectively overcame the strong immune response and caused high host mortality, but S. glaseri and H. bacteriophora did not. Steinernema scapterisci caused high host mortality and reproduced, S. glaseri and H. bacteriophora caused low host mortality but only S. glaseri reproduced, and S. carpocapsae was able to kill the host but reproduced poorly. Most (ca. 90%) of the S. carpocapsae in the hemocoel of P. japonica became encapsulated and melanized within 8 hours postinjection. The symbiotic bacterium, Xenorhabduf nematophilus, was often released before this encapsulation and melanization.  相似文献
