The increased population of the Wild Boar (Sus scrofa L.) in Europe

In this paper the recent population changes of the Wild Boar in different European countries is analysed through the study of hunting statistics. A simultaneous increase in numbers is observed throughout the whole area during the period 1965–1975. From 1975 onwards the population stabilizes itself apart from in peripheral areas like Finland. Potentially favourable factors which play a part in this process are discussed and certain reproductive and dispersive characteristics which favour its invasive behaviour are discussed.     

Purification and characterization of an inhibitor of plasminogen activator released by rat mammary adenocarcinoma cells

An inhibitor of plasminogen activator (PA) secreted by a tumorigenic, but non-metastatic, rat mammary adenocarcinoma cell line has been purified to apparent homogeneity and characterized. It strongly inhibited human urokinase, but was 100 times less potent in inhibiting bovine trypsin and had no effect on plasmin or thrombin. A secreted, urokinase-type PA (Mr 48 000) and a cell-associated PA from a metastatic rat adenocarcinoma cell line were also strongly inhibited. In contrast, a tissue-type PA (Mr 66 000), secreted by human melanoma cells, was only slightly inhibited. Purified inhibitor showed a band of Mr 66 000 in sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and an isoelectric point of 4.5 after chromatofocusing. The inhibition of human urokinase was non-competitive.     

Precipitation of collagens by polyethylene glycols

Types I, II, and III collagens are readily precipitated at neutral pH by polyethylene glycols (PEG). As the molecular weight fraction of the polyethylene glycols increases, they become more effective as precipitants on a weight basis. The amount of PEG required for precipitation depends on the pH, the ionic strength, and the nature of the buffer or salts present. In tissue culture media, low concentrations of collagens and procollagens may be quantitatively precipitated and readily collected by low-speed centrifugation. Polyethylene glycol precipitation can be used to obtain collagens and procollagens from tissue culture media at either analytical or preparative scale, and since the polyethylene glycols do not bind to collagens, the precipitates may be further analyzed directly by chromatographic or electrophoretic methods.     

"Pink urine" in morbidly obese patients following gastric partitioning.

A pink coating on the inner surface of plastic urinary tubing, which gave the impression that the urine was pink, had frequently been noted 4 to 24 hours following gastric partitioning by means of a stapler in morbidly obese patients. A study was therefore done in 187 such patients as well as in 14 patients of normal weight who had undergone abdominal surgery of comparable magnitude. Postoperatively "pink urine" was observed in 32% of the obese patients but in none of the nonobese patients; however, a pink sediment remained following centrifugation of urine collected postoperatively from all the obese patients. Microscopy of this sediment showed crystals of uric acid dihydrate; these were infrequent in the preoperative specimens but present in high concentration in the postoperative specimens, particularly those of "pink urine". X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the nature of the crystals. Preoperatively the obese patients had high-normal serum levels of uric acid. Postoperatively in all the groups of patients the serum levels of uric acid decreased while the urine levels and the urinary clearance of uric acid increased; the last two values, however, were significantly greater, both preoperatively and postoperatively, in those who were morbidly obese. Compared with the patients who did not have "pink urine" the patients with "pink urine" were significantly more obese and had a significantly lower postoperative urine pH. The latter also had a marked postoperative increase in urine osmolality and were the only patients to have a significant postoperative decrease in urine output. Thus, the pink colour of this group''s urine was attributed to precipitation of uric acid crystals, fostered by a decrease in pH and an increase in concentration of the urine.     

The in vitro suppression of spontaneous erythrocyte autoimmune responses with lymphocytes activated with concanavalin A.

When normal mouse spleen cells are cultured in vitro, large numbers of cells develop that produce antibody toward antigens found on bromelain-treated mouse erythrocytes (BrMRBC). The in vitro culture also generates T cells that mediate DTH toward these antigens. We have suggested that under in vivo conditions, suppressor T cells maintain these immune responses at a low level but that this suppression wanes when the cells are cultured in vitro. The present study examines the effect of concanavalin A (Con A) on the in vitro development of humoral and cell-mediated immunity to Br-MRBC. Mitogenic concentrations of Con A prevented the development of both the PFC and TDTH responses toward BrMRBC. The Con A-induced suppression was due to the induction of suppressor T cells; thus the addition of Con A-activated cells to fresh spleen cell cultures prevented the development of both the PFC and TDTH response against BrMRBC.     

The amino acid sequences of plastocyanin from Mercurialis perennis and Capsella bursa-pastoris

The amino acid sequences of the plastocyanins from Mercurialis perennis and Capsella bursa-pastoris have been determined. The amides at positions 64 and 68 in the Mercurialis sequence were positioned by ‘homology’ Both proteins are single polypeptide chains of 99 residues and are closely related to other higher plant plastocyanins.     

The immunobiology of murine interleukin-1 alpha encoded by recombinant vaccinia virus

Recombinant vaccinia viruses were constructed which encoded murine interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) (VV-IL1). One virus also encoded the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of influenza virus (VV-HA-IL1). Mice were infected with these viruses and the effects of co-expressed IL-1 on various immune parameters were assessed. The growth of VV-IL1 in vivo was less than that of the control virus, and this was reflected in the reduced virus-induced cell-mediated immune responses. However, specific antibody responses generated after challenge with vaccinia or influenza viruses were significantly higher when VV-HA-IL1 was used to prime mice, compared to the control virus (VV-HA-TK). This study demonstrates that co-expressed cytokines may be useful for selective alteration of immune reactivity.     

The amino acid sequence of cytochrome c from niger-seed, Guizotia abyssinica

The amino acid sequence of cytochrome c from niger-seed has been determined by sequence analysis of chymotryptic and tryptic peptides using the dansyl-phenylisothiocyanate method and by qualitative analysis of peptide composition by the dansyl method. Although the spectral ratios indicated the protein was not completely pure, no indication of impurity was found during the sequence analysis and no peptides in addition to those given here were obtained. In certain cases the alignment of peptides was by homology with other cytochromes c. Four residues in the proposed sequence, alanine-1, cysteine-25, histidine-26 and lysine-61 were identified only from peptide compositions. The amino-terminus of the protein is acetylated. The sequence contains two residues of ϵ-N-trimethyllysine.
