High Rates of Obesity and Chronic Disease Among United Methodist Clergy

We used self‐reported data from United Methodist clergy to assess the prevalence of obesity and having ever been told certain chronic disease diagnoses. Of all actively serving United Methodist clergy in North Carolina (NC) 95% (n = 1726) completed self‐report height and weight items and diagnosis questions from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS). We calculated BMI categories and diagnosis prevalence rates for the clergy and compared them to the NC population using BRFSS data. The obesity rate among clergy aged 35–64 years was 39.7%, 10.3% (95% CI = 8.5%, 12.1%) higher than their NC counterparts. Clergy also reported significantly higher rates of having ever been given diagnoses of diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, angina, and asthma compared to their NC peers. Health interventions that address obesity and chronic disease among clergy are urgently needed.     

Identification of psychrotrophic pseudomonads from goats' milk by computer-assisted analysis of carbon source assimilation data

The results of carbon source assimilation tests on a group of psychrotrophic pseudomonas were compared with published data for established Pseudomonas taxa, using computer-assisted numerical taxonomic analysis and a modified diagnostic computer program. Several phenons were not grouped at the biovar level by numerical taxonomic analysis. Identification of strains by the diagnostic program revealed heterogeneity among those in the unassigned phenons, and supported a continuum concept among the fluorescent pseudomonads.     

A numerical taxonomic study of proteolytic and lipolytic psychrotrophs isolated from caprine milk

Lipolytic and proteolytic psychrotrophs were isolated from raw and pasteurized goats' milk, which had been stored at 5 degrees C for 7 d. The 241 strains isolated and 20 reference strains were examined by 149 biochemical, physiological, and morphological tests. The results yielded 195 characters suitable for taxonomic analysis. Computer-assisted complete linkage analysis, using the Jaccard coefficient, produced 22 phenons at 75% S. The results showed that Pseudomonas fluorescens was the predominant psychrotrophic bacterium, but that Pseudomonas fragi was dominant in some milk samples. Strains of Serratia liquefaciens and Flavobacterium balustinum were also identified.     

Activation of galactose-containing glycoprotein and solid supports by galactose oxidase in presence of catalase for immobilization purposes

Summary Specific oxidation of D-galactose present in the carbohydrate moiety of glucose oxidase from Aspergillus niger by galactose oxidase in the presence of catalase (48% efficiency) did not change the activity of the enzyme. Oxidized enzyme was coupled to hydrazide derivatives of O--D-galactosyl Separon H 1000 or of Sepharose 4B. Both solid supports were modified with adipic acid dihydrazide after their activation with galactose oxidase. Each immobilized preparation of glucose oxidase showed higher activity than was achieved by other immobilizing procedures.     

Interleukin-1 inhibits PGE2 binding to macrophage-like P388D1 cells by a cyclic AMP-independent process

The interaction between interleukin IL-1α and PGE₂ on P388D₂ on cells has been investigated. Preincubation of murine macrophage-like cells, P388D₁, with IL-1α (0–73 pM) reduced the binding of PGE₂ to these cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Scatchard analysis showed that IL-1α decreased the PGE₂ binding by lowering both the high and low affinity receptor binding capacities (from 0.31 ± 0.02 to 0.12 ± 0.01 fmol/10⁶ cells for the high affinity receptor binding sites and from 2.41 ± 0.12 to 1.51 ± 0.21 fmol/10⁶ cells for the low affinity receptor binding sites). However, the dissociation constants of the receptor of the IL-1α-treated cells remained unchanged. Inhibition of PGE₂ binding IL-1α did not involve changes in either protein phosphorylation or intracellular cyclic AMP levels. Our data clearly show that IL-1α inhibits the binding of PGE₂ to monocytes/macrophages and may thereby counter the immunosuppressive actions of PGE₂.
