Sitona lineatus and Apion vorax were the two most common species of weevil on field beans (Vicia faba minor) at Rothamsted between 1970 and 1974. In glasshouse tests, A. vorax was a much more efficient vector than 5. lineatus of broad bean stain virus (BBSV) and Echtes Ackerbohnenmosaik-Virus (EAMV), and both species transmitted EAMV more often than BBSV. Five other species of Apion transmitted the viruses infrequently or not at all. S. lineatus adults transmitted no more often after 8–16 days on infected plants than after 1–2 days. Some A. vorax adults transmitted EAMV, but not BBSV, after feeding on infected leaves for a few minutes. After 4 days on infected plants, A. vorax sometimes remained infective for the following 8 days. No A. vorax collected from woodland plants in spring was infective with BBSV or EAMV, but 4% from bean crops containing seed-borne infection carried BBSV and 17% carried EAMV. BBSV and EAMV were recovered from triturated weevils, but not from weevil haemolymph. Possibly the viruses are transmitted as contaminants of the mouthparts or by regurgitation during feeding, but A. vorax was observed to regurgitate only when anaesthetized. BBSV and EAMV were not transmitted by aphids (Aphis fabae and Acyrthosiphon pisum), nor by pollen beetles {Meligethes spp.). Field observations suggest that infected seed is the main source of BBSV and EAMV in spring-sown crops, and that crops grown from virus-free seed, and isolated from infected crops by 250–500 m, remain free of infection for most of the season.  相似文献

The effects of fusicoccin on the germination of dormant, light-requiring or abscisic acid-inhibited seeds has been investigated. (1) Fusicoccin (10?6M) induces germination in dormant wheat seeds (Triticum durum cv. Cappelli; 1972 crop) and stimulates it in seeds already relieved from dormancy (1971 crop), with an effect similar to that of gibberellic acid. (2) Fusicoccin (1.5 × 10?6M) is more active than the two phytohormones gibberellic acid and benzyladenine and than white light in stimulating light-requiring lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa cv. Grand Rapids) to germinate. Germination of radish seeds (Raphanus sativus) is also accelerated by fusicoccin, while benzyladenine and gibberellic acid are less active in this material. (3) Fusicoccin (1.5 × 10?5M) removes almost completely the inhibitory effect of abscisic acid on germination of radish and lettuce seeds, whereas benzyladenine (10?4M) and gibberellic acid (3 × 10?4M) remove the inhibition only partially. The possible relationship between these results and previous information on growth by cell enlargement is discussed in terms of the mechanism of action of fusicoccin as compared with natural hormones.  相似文献

We studied leaves of 208 seedlings (S), infants (I) and juveniles(J) ofEuterpe edulis, randomly selected from plants in 1 ha ofswampy forest in SE Brazil. Each new leaf began extending afterthe complete development of the preceding leaf. The sequencesteps of leaf growth were emergence, linear growth while closed, opening of segments and logarithmic growth of the petiole. Averageleaf production rate (2.21 leaves per plant year-1) did notvary among ontogenetic stages, conforming to a plastochronicrhythm. Average linear growth rate of the closed leaf was directlyrelated to average area of the open lamina. Herbivores attacked33.0% of all leaves giving rise to up to 10% loss of area andincluded damping-off-inducing suckers (7.1%), ordinary suckers(9.8%), chewers (5.4%), miners (2.7%) and multiple attacks (8.0%).These attacks varied among stages (S=22.4%, I=38.1%, J=33.3%),as did leaf mortality rates (S=26.5%, I=14.3% and J=0.0%). Unknownfactors were the main cause of leaf mortality (S=14.3%, I=7.1%).Not losing a leaf while a seedling and attaining a minimum leafarea in the infant stage were critical events for survival.Plants gained leaf area by not losing leaves while a seedling,by producing larger leaves with greater growth rates, and byaccumulating leaves with longer lifespans. The petiole can simulatean energetically cheaper branch, delimit a vital space aroundthe stem, favourably position the leaf lamina and substituteprovisionally for stem growth in height.Copyright 1999 Annalsof Botany Company Arecaceae,Euterpe edulis, herbivory, leaf ecology, leaf growth, leaf production, semideciduous forest, southeastern Brazil.  相似文献

The Corsica–Sardinia archipelago is a hotspot of Mediterranean biodiversity. Although tempo and mode of arrival of species to this archipelago and phylogenetic relationships with continental species have been investigated in many taxa, very little is known about the current genetic structure and evolutionary history subsequent to arrival. In the present study, we investigated genetic variation within and among populations of the Tyrrhenian treefrog Hyla sarda, a species endemic to the Corsica–Sardinia microplate and the surrounding islands, by means of allozyme electrophoresis. Low genetic divergence (mean Dnei = 0.01) and no appreciable differences in the levels and distribution of genetic variability (HE: 0.06–0.09) were observed among all but one populations (Elba). Historical demographic and isolation‐by‐distance analyses indicated that this diffused genetic homogeneity could be the result of recent demographic expansion. Along with paleoenvironmental data, such expansion could have occurred during the last glacial phase, when wide and persistent land bridges connected the main islands and a widening of lowland areas occurred. This scenario is unprecedented among Corsica–Sardinia species. Together with the lack of concordance even among the few previously studied species, this suggests either that species had largely independent responses to paleoenvironmental changes, or that most of the history of assembly of the Corsica–Sardinia biota is yet to be written. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 159–167.  相似文献

When grown in a glasshouse during spring or autumn field bean (Vicia faba minor) seedlings infected with seed-borne broad bean stain virus (BBSV) or Echtes Ackerbohnenmosaik-Virus (EAMV) usually showed symptoms on some leaves within 4 wk of emergence. Symptoms caused by each virus were indistinguishable. The viruses were transmitted as often through unblemished seeds as through seeds with necrotic patches or stains on the seed coat, and sometimes as often through large as through small seeds. Soaking seeds for 24 h in solutions of 8-azaguanine or polyacrylic acid did not decrease transmission. Both viruses were detected in nearly mature seeds by inoculation to Phaseolus vulgaris but neither virus was detected in fully ripened seeds by inoculation or serological tests. The percentage of seeds from field plots that produced infected seedlings when sown in a glasshouse was closely related to the percentage of parent plants that showed symptoms of BBSV and/or EAMV at the end of flowering. The relationship seemed similar in different cultivars. On average EAMV was transmitted through more seeds than BBSV, probably because more parent plants were infected with EAMV. Inspection of seed crops for symptoms of BBSV and EAMV at the seedling stage and again at the end of flowering is probably the most practicable way of identifying progeny seed lots with little or no infection.  相似文献

In spring 1974 and 1975 many adult Apion vorax were found at Rothamsted in woods bordering fields that had been cropped with field beans (Vicia faba) the previous season. The weevils were most common on bramble (Rubus spp.), dog's mercury (Mercurialis perennis) and nettle (Urtica dioica). A decrease in the woodland population in May coincided with the appearance of the weevil on field bean crops in neighbouring areas. In laboratory feeding tests, adult weevils fed more on field bean leaves than on leaves of plants on which they were common in woodlands, and they fed more on field beans in May than at other times of the year. No difference was observed in the feeding of male and female weevils. Many A. vorax were caught on sticky traps in woodlands at Rothamsted in 1975, particularly in April and May, but very few were caught on sticky traps in bean crops. The numbers of A. vorax recorded on the upper foliage of bean crops at Rothamsted in June each year from 1970 to 1980 ranged from 0 to 10 per 10-m row. Eggs, larvae and pupae of A. vorax were found in field bean flowers collected from field crops. The larvae were feeding on the tips of the pistils and stamens. Adult weevils that emerged in mid-June from the flowers of autumn-sown beans mated and produced a second generation when caged on glasshouse-grown plants. Some Apion larvae, possibly A. vorax, were found inside flowers of common vetch (Vicia sativa). The name ‘bean flower weevil’ is considered a suitable common name for A. vorax.  相似文献

Fusicoccin, a toxin stimulating cell enlargement and inducing proton extrusion in various plant tissues, has been shown to replace kinetin, gibberellic acid and red light in breaking seed dormancy. It also removes the inhibitory effect of abscisic acid. The present data also show that the stimulating effect of fucicoccin on embryo growth of decoated radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and maize (Zea mays) seeds and on the development of maize embryos is accompanied by an early, significant acidification of the medium. Acidification of the medium is also observed when fusicoccin reverses the abscisic acid-induced inhibition of germination. These results support the hypothesis that the mode of action of fusicoccin in promoting germination involves, as in stimulation of cell enlargement, the activation at the cell membrane level of proton extrusion processes. The physiological significance of fusicoccin-induced release of protons at the onset of germination is discussed in comparison with the results concerning the mechanism of action of fusicoccin on cell enlargement in other plant materials.  相似文献
