Similarities in stratigraphic sequence, syndepositional topography and tectonics, and regional tectonic setting between the Mohawk Valley, New York, in the Middle Ordovician and the Australian flank of the Timor Trough today support the idea that the Taconic Foreland Basin orginated in an arc-continent collision. The Trenton Group strata studied - a roughly four million year long sequence correlated by bentonite beds along an 83 km downslope transect in the central Mohawk Valley - represent the continental shelf and outer trench slope. Bank limestones pass upward and downslope into deep water black shales in a manner reminiscent of the lateral and vertical sedimentary sequence on the Sahul Shelf and Australian flank of the Timor Trough. In studying topography, relative depth was measured through reciprocal averaging ordination of benthic macroinvertebrate fossil assemblages. Downslope bathymetric profiles show the development of a horst and graben topography coincident with regional tilting and transgression - a pattern associated with downward flexure of the Australian Plate approaching Timor. The net rate of transgression corresponds to an arc-continent convergence rate on the order of 2 cm per year.  相似文献

Developing capsules of foxglove (Digitalis purpurea L.) weredetached at 4-d intervals between 12 and 28 d after flowering(DAF) and attached to canes within a natural foxglove standsuch that they were experiencing field conditions identicalto those experienced by normally developing, on-plant capsules.Seeds were subsequently harvested at 4-d intervals until 40total d after flowering (tDAF). Capsule detachment resultedin the cessation of dry matter accumulation; the mean dry weightof seeds from 12, 16, 20, 24, and 28 DAF-detached capsules was21, 32, 51, 60, and 79% respectively, of the mean dry weightof seeds during the post-abscission phase of normal, on-plantdevelopment. Nonetheless, seeds from detached capsules acquiredthe ability to germinate at harvest and tolerance to dryingunder seed conservation conditions (15% relative humidity and15 °C). The capability to withstand storage also arose followingcapsule detachment. Seed longevity increased the longer theperiod of detachment but, in the earlier-detached capsules (12,16, and 20 DAF) longevity subsequently declined. Only seedsfrom later detached capsules (24 and 28 DAF) acquired longevitieswhich were comparable with seeds from on-plant capsules, however,no seeds from detached capsules were as long lived as seedsfrom on-plant capsules harvested at 40 DAF. The first collagen recognizable in the embryo is in the formof an incomplete basal lamina under the epiblast and hypoblast. We suggest that this collagen acts as a railroad track to guidethe migration of the primitive streak mesenchyme. The mesenchymeaggregates into chordamesoderm, a layer which is said to "induce"the overlying epiblast (now ectoderm) to develop into neuralfolds. This tissue interaction may be mediated by the formationof complete basal laminas separating the two tissues and bydeposition of sulfated mucopolysaccharides in the interveningextracellular space. At the very least, the collagenous basallamina serves to give the elongating cells of the developingneural tube a firm foothold. The fully formed neural tube andadjacent notochord are said to induce the sclerotome of thesomite to migrate medially and differentiate into cartilage.Notochord and neural tube basal lamina and collagen fibrilsmay play a role by guiding the migrating cells and stabilizingthe already existing chondrogenic bias of the cells. We wereunable to prove this hypothesis directly (by adding collagento somite cultures), because in our hands the somites died invitro even in the presence of neural tube and notochord. Wedid obtain direct evidence, however, that the basal lamina ofthe lens can promote the differentiation of the cornea in vitro.  相似文献

The extent to which phosphate can be absorbed directly fromthe outer medium by stolon internodes and contribute to thetotal accumulation of phosphate by intact plants of white clover(Trifolium repens L. cv. Blanca) was assessed in hydroponicexperiments in a controlled environment room. The uptake ofphosphate by intact roots or stolons was measured by sealinga segment (6-0 mm long) across a flow-cell in which 32P-labellednutrient solution was circulated for 24 h, the rest of the rootsystem receiving unlabelled nutrient solution. The rate of uptakeof phosphate (µmol g–1 d–1 dry wt. basis)by roots was more than 300 times that by intact stolons. Pretreatmentof stolons by gentle abrasion to remove cuticle, so as to simulatethe condition of stolons in the field, increased the uptakeof phosphate 7-fold compared with that of intact stolons. However, the potential of stolons to contribute to the P status of whitedover in the field was calculated to be small (5%). When an incision was made through the hypodermal layer of stolons, the rate of phosphate uptake greatly increased, attaining 71%of that by root segments. This increase, which was greater athigher phosphate concentrations, indicates that the suberi.zedhypodermis constitutes a major barrier to the influx of phosphatein the stolon. After withholding phosphate for different time intervals, thesubsequent rate of phosphate uptake by roots was increased 2-3-foldafter 2 d phosphate deprivation and 3-4-fold after 6 d or 13d phosphate deprivation. A higher proportion of absorbed phosphatewas transported to shoots in phosphate-deprived plants. After1 d of uptake following restoration of the phosphate supply, the concentrations of labelled phosphate in shoots were greaterthan in control plants, although the concentrations of labelin roots was less. However, the rate of uptake of phosphateby stolons, following deprivation, was not significantly increased. These results suggest that the mechanism regulating the enhancedrate of phosphate loading into the xylem, initiated by a periodof phosphate deprivation, is specific to roots and is not inducedin stolons. The results are discussed in relation to the growth and acquisitionof phosphate by white clover in the field. HAY, A., 1992. A new Australian genus of Araceae, with notes on generic limits and biogeography of the Areae . A monotypic aroid genus is described from Melville Island, Northern Territory, Australia. The genus is diagnosed in the tribe Areae by its tubular spathe base divided into two chambers by an annular septum. The genus is most closely related to Sauromatum and to some Asiatic, not Australian, species of Typhonium . It is proposed that the geography of the Areae (including Arum, Dracunculus etc.) may now suggest a Gondwanan (rather than Laurasian) and hence Cretaceous (rather than much more recent) origin for the tribe, and its dual arrival in Malesia.  相似文献

The effect of Hop latent virus (HpLV), Hop mosaic virus (HpMV), and Prunus necrotic ring spot virus [PNRSV (apple, A, and intermediate, I, serotypes)], on the survival of softwood cuttings, the vigour (height) of early season growth, cone yield, and the levels of brewing organic acids in mature plants, was assessed in four hop (Humulus lupulus) cultivars in Tasmania, Australia. Virus infections were associated with an increase in the mortality of softwood cuttings following propagation. In all cultivars, height of early growth was a poor indicator of the effect of viruses on cone yield and levels of brewing organic acids (alpha and beta acids). In cv. ‘Nugget’, infection by the virus combinations studied was not associated with reductions in cone yield, however plants infected by PNRSV‐I, in 2000, had 11% lower alpha acids and 7% lower beta acids. In ‘Opal’, infection by HpLV and HpMV were the most deleterious to cone yield, however the effect of HpMV was ameliorated when in combination with PNRSV‐I. Reductions in alpha and beta acid content were attributable only to mixed infections of HpLV + HpMV in combination with either serotype of PNRSV. In ‘Pride of Ringwood’, yield loss was mostly attributable to HpMV and to a lesser extent, HpLV. Some ameliorations in cone yield loss occurred in plants containing a mixed infection between HpMV and HpLV or either of the ilarvirus serotypes. Both of the ilarviruses and HpMV caused reductions in alpha acid content. In ‘Victoria’, cone yield loss was mostly attributable to combinations of viruses such as HpLV + PNRSV‐I and HpLV + HpMV. The deleterious effect of HpLV + HpMV was ameliorated by PNRSV‐A and to a lesser extent, PNRSV‐I. Infection by the virus combinations studied did not significantly affect alpha and beta acid levels in either year. Results suggested the effect of viruses and their combinations differed between cultivars and varied between seasons. This information, when combined with knowledge of the rates of virus re‐infection, can be used to recommend control strategies for the Australian hop industry.  相似文献
