A biogeographic and phylogenetic study of Cyrtandra (Gesneriaceae) in the Sundaland region (Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia) and the Philippines using nuclear ribosomal (ITS) DNA sequence data reveals a major division between the Cyrtandra floras of Sundaland and the Philippines. Palawan, the most westerly of the Philippine islands, emerges as an area of mixing between these two. The Bornean element in the Cyrtandra flora of Palawan (two species in our sample) appears to result from recent (i.e. Pleistocene) dispersal from Borneo. The remaining seven species sampled from Palawan are most closely related to those from elsewhere in the Philippines. However, the Palawan clade is sister to the other Philippine taxa, suggesting an ancient (possibly Pliocene) vicariance event. Huxley's line–a zoogeographic boundary placing Palawan and Borneo together–receives some support from this study as there is evidence of recent dispersal of Bornean flora into Palawan. However, in terms of more ancient biogeographic patterning of the region, Palawan has stronger links with the other Philippine islands.  相似文献

Tropical forests contain an important proportion of the carbon stored in terrestrial vegetation, but estimated aboveground biomass (AGB) in tropical forests varies two‐fold, with little consensus on the relative importance of climate, soil and forest structure in explaining spatial patterns. Here, we present analyses from a plot network designed to examine differences among contrasting forest habitats (terra firme, seasonally flooded, and white‐sand forests) that span the gradient of climate and soil conditions of the Amazon basin. We installed 0.5‐ha plots in 74 sites representing the three lowland forest habitats in both Loreto, Peru and French Guiana, and we integrated data describing climate, soil physical and chemical characteristics and stand variables, including local measures of wood specific gravity (WSG). We use a hierarchical model to separate the contributions of stand variables from climate and soil variables in explaining spatial variation in AGB. AGB differed among both habitats and regions, varying from 78 Mg ha?1 in white‐sand forest in Peru to 605 Mg ha?1 in terra firme clay forest of French Guiana. Stand variables including tree size and basal area, and to a lesser extent WSG, were strong predictors of spatial variation in AGB. In contrast, soil and climate variables explained little overall variation in AGB, though they did co‐vary to a limited extent with stand parameters that explained AGB. Our results suggest that positive feedbacks in forest structure and turnover control AGB in Amazonian forests, with richer soils (Peruvian terra firme and all seasonally flooded habitats) supporting smaller trees with lower wood density and moderate soils (French Guianan terra firme) supporting many larger trees with high wood density. The weak direct relationships we observed between soil and climate variables and AGB suggest that the most appropriate approaches to landscape scale modeling of AGB in the Amazon would be based on remote sensing methods to map stand structure.  相似文献

This recent meeting, held on the campus of the University of British Columbia, attracted 1200 delegates and a vast array of talks, but was notable for a remarkable showing of talks and posters on DNA barcoding in plants, spread through many sessions. The Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding defines barcoding as ‘species identification and discovery through the analysis of short, standardized gene regions known as DNA barcodes’. This approach is somewhat controversial in animals ( Rubinoff et al., 2006 ), although it has been shown to be useful and reliable in many metazoan taxa ( Meyer & Paulay 2005 ; Hajibabaei et al., 2007 ), in which the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene is used. However, in land plants, COI evolves far too slowly to be useful, and there is no obvious single universal alternative ( Fazekas et al., 2008 ). Genes that work well in one taxon may perform poorly in other taxa. Additionally, some perfectly good plant species, reproductively isolated and morphologically and ecologically distinct, are too young to show much sequence divergence at most loci. Nevertheless, as we saw at this conference, progress has been made towards identifying genes that serve many of the functions of DNA barcodes, at least in some plant taxa.  相似文献

In order to reduce cellular complexity in the study of the controls of the biochemical differentiation of mammary gland epithelium, approximately 100-fold purified epithelial cells from the mammary glands of virgin BALB/c mice were grown in three-dimensional collagen gels, and formed colonies that resembled mammary ductules. Here we report the induction of a biochemical differentiation in these purified epithelial cells in response to appropriate hormonal signals, starting from the state in the virgin mammary gland and ending with the stage characteristic of lactation. Induction of the synthesis of caseins was examined as a marker of mammary functional differentiation using sensitive immunologic autoradiography. The cells were maximally induced by the combination of the hormones, insulin, prolactin, aldosterone, and hydrocortisone, in both serum-containing and essentially serum-free media. The induction required insulin and prolactin, and was enhanced by the presence of the steroids. The cellular distribution of the induction was general, inasmuch as three-quarters of the hormone-stimulated cells were casein-positive according to immunocytochemistry. In order to assess the role of the three-dimensional conformation in the induction process, the purified mammary epithelial cells were grown as monolayers on plastic and collagen-coated surfaces. In these two-dimensional cultures, the synthesis of casein was not induced, suggesting that cell shape, orientation, and multicellular organization are important parameters in the hormonal induction of the biochemical differentiation. The finding of the induction of differentiation-specific proteins in cultures of purified epithelial cells from virgin glands allows examination of the molecular mechanisms involved in the complete induction process in the virtual absence of fat cells, fibroblasts, and the complex assortment of biochemical constituents of the mammary fat pad.  相似文献
