Summary Fruit of the blackberry, Rubus pennsylvanicus Poir. (Rosaceae), were examined to determine variation in maturation characteristics. Maturation timing and rate varied greatly among individual fruits, resulting in a bi-colored fruiting display comprised largely of two maturation stages, pre-ripe (salmon and scarlet) and ripe (dark brown and black). While ripe fruit were generally larger and heavier than pre-ripe fruit, exhibiting greater fresh and dry fruit weight, diameter, water content, and total seed weight, no significant differences were found in energy content, i.e. numbers of calories per gram pulp, or in pulp:seed ratio. The differences between ripe and pre-ripe fruit appear to be due largely to an increase in water content and seed weight with maturity. The fact that little energetic benefit accrues to the preferential selection of ripe fruit suggests that bi-colored Rubus displays may be considered to be unicolored. 相似文献

When Darwin first proposed the possibility of sexual selection, he identified two mechanisms, male competition for mates and female choice of mates. Extending this classification, we distinguish two forms of mate choice, direct and indirect. This distinction clarifies the relationship between Darwin's two mechanisms and, furthermore, indicates that the potential scope for sexual selection is much wider than thus far realized. Direct mate choice, the focus of most research on sexual selection in recent decades, requires discrimination between attributes of individuals of the opposite sex. Indirect mate choice includes all other behavior or morphology that restricts an individual's set of potential mates. Possibilities for indirect mate choice include advertisement of fertility or copulation, evasive behavior, aggregation or synchronization with other individuals of the same sex, and preferences for mating in particular locations. In each of these cases, indirect mate choice sets the conditions for competition among individuals of the opposite sex and increases the chances of mating with a successful competitor. Like direct mate choice, indirect mate choice produces assortative mating. As a consequence, the genetic correlation between alleles affecting indirect choice and those affecting success in competition for mates can produce self-accelerating evolution of these complementary features of the sexes. The broad possibilities for indirect mate choice indicate that sexual selection has more pervasive influences on the coevolution of male and female characteristics than previously realized. 相似文献

Variation in heat-shock proteins among species of desert fishes (Poeciliidae, Poeciliopsis) 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Analysis of the heat-shock proteins (hsps) of six closely related species
of Poeciliopsis demonstrated the existence of biochemical diversity in the
hsp100, hsp70, hsp60, and hsp30 protein families among species. Each
species expressed five to seven hsp70-related isoforms. Constitutive 70-kD
isoforms were identical among species, but four different patterns of
heat-inducible isoforms were seen in these six species. Members of the
hsp70 family of molecular chaperones are included among the most highly
conserved proteins known, and the possibility of variation in hsp70 among
closely related species has rarely been addressed. The hsp30 family is
known to be less conserved than the hsp70 family, and, as expected, the
Poeciliopsis hsp30 patterns showed more variation. Most of the hsp30
isoforms characteristic of a particular species were unique to that
species. Hsp100 and hsp60 were identical in five of the species, but
alternate isoforms were found in P. monacha. The small size and limited
geographical distribution of the P. monacha population have probably
contributed to the uniqueness of the monacha pattern. Two of the species
were shown to acquire thermotolerance, the ability to withstand normally
lethal temperatures when subjected to a gradual temperature increase.
Rapid-heating protocols commonly used to establish critical thermal maxima
of organisms do not include this inducible component of thermoresistance
and therefore do not adequately assess an organism's capacity to withstand
thermal stress.

The pollen of all four genera of Gronovioideae—Cevallia, Fuertesia, Gronovia, and Petalonyx—was examined in light microscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The pollen of Cevallia, of Fuertesia, and of Gronovia can be easily distinguished from each other and from all remaining Loasaceae. Only Petalonyx, with a striate tectum, shows a clear relationship to the Mentzelioideae and Loasoideae, the vast majority of which have striate-reticulate or striate tecta. The trichome data are mostly congruent with the pollen data: Cevallia, Fuertesia, and Gronovia each have a distinctive trichome not known to occur elsewhere in the family, while Petalonyx has only the common types. A cladistic analysis of Gronovioideae utilizing Mentzelia as the outgroup proposes that Cevallia, Gronovia, and Fuertesia are a sister group to Petalonyx within the subfamily. In neonatal and young adult SH and WK rats, maturation of a functional unit consisting of sympathetic nerve terminals and smooth muscle (levator palpebrae) was assessed by measuring the contractile response to tyramine, an agent which releases endogenous norepinephrine from sympathetic nerve terminals. Responses in SH are comparable to WK at 5–6 days postnatally, smaller from the 8th through 19th day and larger in young adults (41–46 days old). Results indicate that functional maturation of the nerve terminal-smooth muscle complex is retarded in SH relative to WK during the 2nd and 3rd postnatal weeks. It is suggested that retardation in the neonatal SH rat is an expression of a genetic defect in the growth of the complex and that the enhanced response in young adult SH is a consequence of the neonatal abnormality. 相似文献

Using data from the 1965 U.S. National Fertility Study, white childless wives 30-54 years old were categorized as voluntarily, involuntarily, or temporarily childless. These 3 groups were then compared along many demographic, socioeconomic, marital, and religious lines. It was found that voluntarily and involuntarily childless wives were similar across most characteristics and both groups were different from the temporarily childless women. This last group is considerably younger than either of the other 2 groups; this fact may account for the differences between this and the other 2 groups. Other literature on childlessness is cited and compared. The difficulties with categorization of childless wives are discussed. Before it is generally concluded that differences do not exist between voluntarily and involuntarily childless wives, it will be necessary to study data from younger women who benefited from the "new fertility regime" of recent years. 相似文献

Women with pre-eclampsia and proteinuria 300-499mg/24h (PE300, referent group, n=60) or proteinuria ≥500 mg/24h (PE500, n=161) were compared with two groups of non-proteinuric women with chronic hypertension (CHT, n=615) or gestational hypertension (GH, n=110).Main Outcome Measures
Maternal: progression to severe hypertension. Perinatal: small for gestational age (SGA) <5th centile, gestation at delivery.Results
Severe hypertension occurred more frequently in PE500 (35%) and PE300 (27%) than CHT (5.9%; P≤0.01) and GH (10%; p≤0.001). Gestation at delivery was earlier in PE500 (33.2w) than PE300 (37.3w; P≤0.001), and later in CHT (38.3w; P≤0.05) and GH (39.1w; P≤0.001). SGA infants were more frequent in PE300 (32%) than in CHT (13.3%; P≤0.001) and GH (16.5%; P≤0.05). Women in PE500 were more likely to have a caesarean section than PE300 (78% vs. 48%; P≤0.001), and to receive magnesium sulphate (17% vs. 1.7%, P≤0.05).Conclusion
Women with PE300 have complication rates above those of women managed as out-patients (GH and CHT), meriting closer surveillance and confirming 300 mg/d as an appropriate threshold for determining in-patient management. Adverse perinatal outcomes are higher still in women with PE500. 相似文献9.
In clinical neurology, a comprehensive understanding of consciousness has been regarded as an abstract concept - best left
to philosophers. However, times are changing and the need to clinically assess consciousness is increasingly becoming a real-world,
practical challenge. Current methods for evaluating altered levels of consciousness are highly reliant on either behavioural
measures or anatomical imaging. While these methods have some utility, estimates of misdiagnosis are worrisome (as high as
43%) - clearly this is a major clinical problem. The solution must involve objective, physiologically based measures that
do not rely on behaviour. This paper reviews recent advances in physiologically based measures that enable better evaluation
of consciousness states (coma, vegetative state, minimally conscious state, and locked in syndrome). Based on the evidence
to-date, electroencephalographic and neuroimaging based assessments of consciousness provide valuable information for evaluation

Our aims were to investigate whether men who fathered small for gestational age (SGA) infants themselves had lower birthweight, were more likely to be obese, have central adiposity and elevated blood pressure in adult life compared with men who fathered non-SGA infants. A total of 2,002 couples participating in the Screening for Pregnancy Endpoints (SCOPE) study were enrolled in early pregnancy and pregnancy outcome data collected prospectively. SGA was defined as birthweight <10th customized centile, obesity as BMI ≥30 kg/m(2), central adiposity as waist circumference >102 cm. Logistic regression was used to compare rates of obesity, and central adiposity between men who fathered SGA infants compared with those with non-SGA infants and the final model was adjusted for maternal and paternal confounders. The men who fathered an SGA infant (209 (10.4%)) themselves had lower mean birthweight (3,291 (530) g vs. 3,472 (584) g, P < 0.0001), were more likely to be obese (50 (24.8%) vs. 321 (18.3%), adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.50, 95% confidence interval 1.05-2.16, adjusted for maternal and paternal factors) and to have central adiposity (52 (25.1%) vs. 341 (19.2%), adjusted OR 1.53, 95% confidence interval 1.06-2.20) compared with men who fathered a non-SGA infant. Elevated paternal blood pressure was not associated with SGA. In conclusion, we report a novel relationship between paternal obesity/central adiposity and birth of an SGA infant, which appears to be independent of maternal factors associated with fetal growth restriction. 相似文献
