The ability to learn is common to most animal species: the need to exploit past experience being obviously extremely important for survival, many animals have evolved ways of coping with it. Although the complexity of learning needed for optimal survival may be different in different species, the basic mechanisms appear to be fairly constant even in phylogenetically distant ones. This homogeneity across species in learning mechanisms is in some ways surprising in view of the large phylogenetic differences and of the considerable variability not only in the general plan of their bodily structures, but also, more specifically, in their neural organization and in their behavioral adaptations. One possible explanation is that animals have acquired learning very precociously, and that the original and basic mechanisms have proved so efficient and faultproof as to be preserved from then on without any significant modification. Most researchers of the subject seem to accept the equation «intelligence=learning capability», operationally very useful because it leads to a variety of formal tests. Some researchers, stressing that behavior is subject to the same evolutionary principles as any other character of the organism and acknowledging some problems in the accepted laws of learning, have tried to find a satisfactory answer to the question of animal intelligence by attempting a synthesis between the concepts of animal learning psychology and those of ethology. To some extent, dissatisfaction with established learning theories originated within the theories themselves: the study of phenomena such as autoshaping, selective attention, preferential learning of some responses amongst the many possible, conditioned learning of taste aversions, etc. Further difficulties for conditioning theories arose from the discovery of ethological phenomena. Other researchers have attempted to check the hypothesis that animals possess cognition. A number of complex experimental situtations have been devised to this purpose, but the results still are far from conclusive.  相似文献

The Mediterranean evergreen vegetation of Sicily, comprised in the belt of the Quercetea ilicis, occupies a large part of the island. Human intervention (cutting, fire, pasture) has brought about a degradation of the natural vegetation. This study is based on our phytosociological research of the Quercetea ilicis belt on Sicily.

With the ‘habitat comparison’ method, the dynamical relations between the different vegetation units have been defined.

We distinguish the following stages, with reference to their vegetation structure:

  • a herbaceous stage formed by steppic vegetation, preceded by various types of nitrophilous-ruderal vegetation on abandoned fields;

  • a garrigue stage dominated by half-shrubs;

  • a macquis stage with various distinct plant communities, four communities being important in regressive successions, and three in progressive ones;

  • a woodland and shrub-woodland stage with three different substages: pre-existent forests, present woodlands, and woodlands which tend towards the final, stable stage of vegetation (potential natural vegetation).

The dynamic relationships both in progressive and regressive successions have been synthesized in a scheme. In this scheme we have shown the main stages of the vegetation in their dynamics and we have constructed different series of vegetation types in two altitudinal belts, which are determined by varying environmental conditions of today.

The results also show that in some cases the progressive series follow different pathways than the regressive series, and the final stage of the progressive series is different from the original vegetation.

Functional change of liver Golgi apparatus during carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) poisoning was demonstrated both in rat isolated hepatocytes and in the whole animal. The "in vitro" experimental model provided evidence of Golgi derangement early after giving the haloalkane. The "in vivo" analyses also showed that such an alteration involves both formative and secretory sides of the subcellular structure.  相似文献

We have cloned and analyzed a cDNA containing the coding sequence for human hemopexin. We have first identified, by immunological screening of 30.000 colonies of a liver cDNA library in the expression vector pEX1, a clone carrying an insert 1170 base pairs long that shows 100% homology with a known human hemopexin peptide. The complete sequence coding for hemopexin was isolated from a liver cDNA library in the vector pAT218. The DNA insert of 1523 base pairs shows an open reading frame coding for 439 amino acids, a 3' noncoding region of 159 nucleotides long, followed by a poly(A) tail. The insert spans the entire coding region and from which the primary structure of the protein was deduced. By computer assisted analysis of the amino acid sequence, it was possible to recognize a core unit, of about 45 amino acids, which is repeated 8 or possibly even 10 fold along the polypeptide chain. This feature suggests that the gene might have evolved through a series of duplications. This characteristic, together with prediction of secondary structure, suggest a rough model for the tridimensional folding that allows some speculations on the function of hemopexin. Blot hybridization of total RNA from human liver with nick translated hemopexin cDNA detected a message of about 1600 nucleotides. Southern blot experiments to identify the hemopexin gene (s) suggest that it is not a large multi-gene family, but that there is only one or at most a few genes in the human genome.  相似文献

Several 7-acyl cheno- and ursodeoxycholic acids were obtained in good yields starting from the corresponding cheno- and ursodeoxycholic acids, by a diacylation-selective hydrolysis procedure. A superior method for the synthesis of the 7-oleyl derivatives, by a selective acylation procedure, is also presented.  相似文献

Infection with several DNA or RNA viruses induces a state of increased sensitivity to cell lysis mediated by tumor necrosis factor (TNF), particularly in the presence of gamma interferon (IFN-gamma). Infection of human cells with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may induce a similar phenomenon. However, TNF and IFN-gamma are known upregulators of HIV replication, raising the question of the potential role of these cytokines in the selective elimination of cells infected with this virus. The present study demonstrates that chronically infected U1 cells were killed with much greater efficiency by costimulation with TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma than their uninfected parental cell line U937. However, synergistic induction of viral expression also occurred in U1 cells as a consequence of treatment with the two cytokines. Cell death in U1 cells was not caused by the massive production of virions, in that costimulation with glucocorticoid hormones and TNF-alpha or IFN-gamma resulted in high levels of virion production without cytopathicity. To investigate the nature of the selective cytotoxic effect observed in U1 cells costimulated with TNF-alpha plus IFN-gamma, a panel of uninfected cell clones was generated by limiting dilution of U937 cells and tested for response to TNF-alpha and/or IFN-gamma. In contrast to the uncloned bulk parental U937 cell line, most uninfected cell clones showed a very high susceptibility to being killed by TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma. Similar findings were obtained when both infected U1 cells and several uninfected U937 cell clones were costimulated with an anti-Fas monoclonal antibody in the presence of IFN-gamma, although, unlike cells stimulated with TNF-alpha, cells treated with anti-Fas antibody did not express virus. Therefore, the increased susceptibility to cytokine-mediated lysis observed in cell lines infected with HIV is likely due to the selection of preexisting cell clones rather than viral infection.  相似文献

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a lipid soluble steroid, administered to rats (100 mg/kg b.wt) by a single intraperitoneal injection, increases to twice its normal level in the liver microsomes. Microsomes so enriched become resistant to lipid peroxidation induced by incubation with carbon tetrachloride in the presence of a NADPH-regenerating system: also the lipid peroxidation-dependent inactivation of glucose-6-phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transpetidase due to the haloalkane are prevented. Noteworthy, the liver microsomal drug-metabolizing enzymes and in particular the catalytic activity of cytochrome P450IIE1, responsible for the CCl4-activation, are not impaired by the supplementation with the steroid. Consistently, in DHEA-pretreated microsomes the protein covalent binding of the trichloromethyl radical (CCl3°), is similar to that of not supplemented microsomes treated with CCl4. It thus seems likely that DHEA protects liver microsomes from oxidative damage induced by carbon tetrachloride through its own antioxidant properties rather than inhibiting the metabolism of the toxin.  相似文献

The use of 13X zeolite (0.1-0.4-mm granules), treated with 2N and 0.01N HCI, 0.01M citric acid, 0.1M citric-phosphate buffer (pH 3.6), and in untreated form to adsorb glucose oxidase of fungal origin and microbial catalase was examined. Physicochemical analysis of the support demonstrated that its crystalline structure, greatly altered by the HCl and buffer, could be partially maintained with citric acid. The specific adsorption of the enzymes increased with decreasing pH and proved to be considerable for all the supports. The stability with storage at 25 degrees C is strictly correlated with the titrable acidity of the activated zeolite expressed as meq NaOH/g and with pH value of the activation solution. It proved to be lower than 55 h for both enzymes if adsorbed on zeolite treated with 2N HCl, and 15-fold and 30-fold higher for glucose oxidase and catalase adsorbed, respectively, on zeolite treated with the 0.1M citric-phosphate buffer and 0.01M citric acid. The specific adsorption of glucose oxidase and catalase was, respectively, 1840 U/g at pH 3.0 and 6910 U/g at pH 5.0. Their half-life at 25 degrees C with storage at pH 3.5 for the former and at pH 5.0 for the latter was 800 and 1560 h vs. 40 and 110 h for the corresponding free enzymes.  相似文献
