The location within the brain of labeled neurons giving rise to projections to the ventral magnocellular section of the red nucleus were investigated by means of microiontophoretically injected horseradish peroxidase. Projections were identified from many cortical, thalamic, and hypothalamic structures and from the head of the caudate nucleus, septum, globus pallidus, anterior commissure nucleus, central amygdalar nucleus, field of Forel, Zona incerta, and a number of brainstem structures. Findings in accordance with those found in the literature were obtained on projections to the red nucleus from the coronary and cruciate cortical sulci, the midbrain and dentate (lateral) cerebellar nuclei, subststantia nigra, nucleus gracilis, and the cuneate nucleus. Location within the brain of HP-labeled neurons (origins of projections to the lateral vestibular nucleus) was investigated by iontophoretic injection of this enzyme. Bilateral projections to the following midbrain structures were revealed: the field of Forel, interstitial nuclei of Cajal, oculomotor nerve nuclei, and the red nucleus — to all parts of the lateral vestibular nucleus. Bilateral projections were also shown from more caudally located structures, viz. the superior, medial and inferior (descending) vestibular nuclei, Y groups of the vestibular nuclear complex, facial nucleus and hypoglossi, nucleus prepositus nervi hypoglossi and caudal nuclei of the trigeminal tract; ipsilateral projections from crus IIa of lobulus ansiformus of the cerebellar hemisphere; contralateral projections from the bulbar lateral reticular nucleus and Deiter's nucleus. A tonic organization pattern of afferent inputs from a number of brainstem formations to the dorsal and ventral lateral vestibular nucleus is revealed and trajectories of HP-labeled fiber systems projecting to Deiter's nucleus described.L. Mucosal surfaces provide first-line defense against microbial invasion through their complex secretions. The antimicrobial activities of proteins in these secretions have been well delineated, but the contributions of lipids to mucosal defense have not been defined. We found that normal human nasal fluid contains all major lipid classes (in micrograms per milliliter), as well as lipoproteins and apolipoprotein A-I. The predominant less polar lipids were myristic, palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acid, cholesterol, and cholesteryl palmitate, cholesteryl linoleate, and cholesteryl arachidonate. Normal human bronchioepithelial cell secretions exhibited a similar lipid composition. Removal of less-polar lipids significantly decreased the inherent antibacterial activity of nasal fluid against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which was in part restored after replenishing the lipids. Furthermore, lipids extracted from nasal fluid exerted direct antibacterial activity in synergism with the antimicrobial human neutrophil peptide HNP-2 and liposomal formulations of cholesteryl linoleate and cholesteryl arachidonate were active against P. aeruginosa at physiological concentrations as found in nasal fluid and exerted inhibitory activity against other Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. These data suggest that host-derived lipids contribute to mucosal defense. The emerging concept of host-derived antimicrobial lipids unveils novel roads to a better understanding of the immunology of infectious diseases.  相似文献

The combined effect of 3 mg/L potassium dichromate, 1.5 mg/L cadmium sulfate, and 100 g/L shungite on the growth of chlorococcales green microalgae culture Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.) Bréb. is studied. The toxic effect of potassium dichromate and cadmium sulfate on S. quadricauda is estimated by calculating the share of living and dead cells and physiological parameters. The toxic effect of heavy metals does not manifest itself under the combined action of potassium dichromate or cadmium sulfate and shungite on S. quadricauda. The best growth of the algae culture occurred only when only shungite was added to the culture medium. Shungite can be used to neutralize the toxic effect of heavy metals.  相似文献

Neuronal populations in the brainstem and spinal cord — the sources of fiber pathways to the facial nucleus — were investigated in adult cats by microiontophoretically injecting horseradish peroxidase into restricted areas of the facial nucleus. Projections were identified from thenucleus nervi hypoglossi, nucleus praepositus hypoglossi, nucleus raphe pallidus, nucleus intercalatus, medial nucleus of the solitary tract, dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, neurons of genu of the facial nerve, ipsilateral red nucleus, and reticular formation of the midbrain to the facial nucleus. Projections from a number of other brain structures to the facial nucleus also received confirmation. A topographic map was drawn up, showing how brainstem and spinal cord afferents are distributed in the facial nucleus.L. A. The response of the photosynthetic apparatus to high irradiance illumination (440–2200 W/m2) was studied in the diatom Thallassiosira weisflogii by fluorescence methods. Changes in the photosynthetic apparatus were monitored by measuring characteristics of chlorophyll fluorescence F 0, F m, F v/F m, and qN for several hours after illumination of the alga with high-intensity light. Incubation of the alga with 2 mM DTT, an inhibitor of de-epoxidase of carotenoids in the diadinoxanthin cycle, led to a decrease in the nonphotochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence and a drop in the F v/F m ratio, a characteristic that reflects the quantum efficiency of the functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus. Light-induced absorption changes associated with transformations of carotenoids of diadinoxanthin cycle were recorded in vivo in algal suspensions in the absence and in the presence of DTT. Using the microfluorometric method, we measured cell distribution over the efficiency of the primary processes of photosynthesis (F v/F m) after illumination. We found cells with a high tolerance of their photosynthetic apparatus to photooxidative damage. The relatively high tolerance of a portion of the cell population to high-light illumination can be related to light-induced transformation of carotenoids and to the functioning of other protective systems of the photosynthetic apparatus in diatoms.  相似文献

The genotoxicity of ground water from four bore-holes of different depths (40-120m) in the Ararat valley (Armenia) used both for drinking and irrigation was investigated. The frequency of recessive somatic mutations was determined using the Tradescantia-stamen-hair-mutation (Trad-SHM) test. The Tradescantia clone 02 was used. The pink mutation events (PMEs) were increased by 3.18-6.81-fold in comparison with the control depending both on the depth of subterranean water location and the increase of Na(+) ion concentration in these water samples. The peak frequency was found in water from the 40-45m depth. The deeper the bore-holes, the lower the mutagenicity of water and the concentration of Na(+) ions. Different types of mutant sector arrangements and their frequencies changed depending on the subterranean water depth.  相似文献

The association of membrane and soluble forms of dopamine-beta-monooxygenase to liposomes and micelles made from phosphatidylcholine and lysophosphatidylcholine respectively has been studied using the fluorescence spectroscopy technique. As it was shown in our previous study these bipolar phospholipids activate the reaction catalyzed by the enzyme. Effects of pH and ionic strength on the association process were also studied, and efficiency of the association for apo- and holoenzyme was compared. The data obtained demonstrate that electrostatic attraction is involved in the association process. It was also shown that the membrane dopamine-beta-monooxygenase associated with phospholipid liposomes and micelles with higher efficiency than the soluble one did, which might be due to the involvement of the hydrophobic interactions in the association process. The results of the experiments also suggest that this process is specific and depends on the enzyme conformation, particularly on its quaternary structure. The participation of the hydrophobic peptide of the membrane dopamine-beta-monooxygenase in the formation and stabilization of the enzyme-phospholipid complex in vivo is proposed.  相似文献

Microbial volatiles have a significant impact on the physiological functions of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. Various ketones are present in volatile mixtures produced by plants, bacteria, and fungi. Our earlier results demonstrated the inhibitory effects of soil bacteria volatiles, including ketones, on cyanobacteria. In this work, we thoroughly examined the natural ketones, 2‐nonanone and 2‐undecanone to determine their influence on the photosynthetic activity in Synechococcus sp. PCC 7942. We observed for the first time that the ketones strongly inhibit electron transport through PSII in cyanobacteria cells in vivo. The addition of ketones decreases the quantum yield of primary PSII photoreactions and changes the PSII chlorophyll fluorescence induction curves. There are clear indications that the ketones inhibit electron transfer from QA to QB, electron transport at the donor side of PSII. The ketones can also modify the process of energy transfer from the antenna complex to the PSII reaction center and, by this means, increase both chlorophyll fluorescence quantum yield and the chlorophyll excited state lifetime. At the highest tested concentration (5 mM) 2‐nonanone also induced chlorophyll release from Synechococcus cells that strongly indicates the possible role of the ketones as detergents.  相似文献
