On-line tools for sequence retrieval and multivariate statistics in molecular biology 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We have developed a World-Wide Web server for browsing sequencecollections structured under the ACNUC format and for performingmultivariate analyses on sequences. General collections (likeGenBank or EMBL), as well as specialized data banks (like Hovergenand NRSub) can be accessed. This system allows complex queriesto be constructed, and the result of each query, representedby a list of sequences, is stored on the server. It is thenpossible to reuse this list to compute multivariate analyseson the sequences. Two examples of applications are shown. Thefirst one consists in a study of codon usage with correspondenceanalysis on all the protein genes of Haemophilus influenzaeRd. This study allows the highly expressed genes and the integralmembrane proteins of this organism to be identified. The secondone consists in an ordering of 70 aligned protein sequencesof growth hormone with principal coordinate analysis. With thismethod, we are able to re-establish the patterns of relationshipsbetween the sequences previously determined with tree buildingprograms. 相似文献

Chytrids are ubiquitous fungal parasites in aquatic ecosystems, infecting representatives of all major phytoplankton groups. They repack carbon from inedible phytoplankton hosts into easily ingested chytrid propagules (zoospores), rendering this carbon accessible to zooplankton. Grazing on zoospores may circumvent bottlenecks in carbon transfer imposed by the dominance of inedible or poorly nutritious phytoplankton (mycoloop). We explored qualitative aspects of the mycoloop by analysing lipid profiles (fatty acids, sterols) of two chytrids infecting two major bloom-forming phytoplankton taxa of contrasting nutritional value: the diatom Asterionella formosa and the filamentous cyanobacterium Planktothrix agardhii. The polyunsaturated fatty acid composition of chytrids largely reflected that of their hosts, highlighting their role as conveyors of otherwise inaccessible essential lipids to higher trophic levels. We also showed that chytrids are capable of synthesizing sterols, thus providing a source of these essential nutrients for grazers even when sterols are absent in their phytoplankton hosts. Our findings reveal novel qualitative facets of the mycoloop, showing that parasitic chytrids, in addition to making carbon and essential lipids available from inedible sources, also upgrade their host's biochemical composition by producing sterols de novo, thereby enhancing carbon and energy fluxes in aquatic food webs. 相似文献

Microtopographic features of the various growth stages of the three free-living larval stages of the rat hookworm Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nematoda) were surveyed by scanning electron microscopy. These worms have a rounded anterior end and an elongated tail. Cuticular annulations were observed along the body, which also bore two ribbon-like lateral alae. Two rings of six lip-like lappets were observed around the triradiate oral opening in all larval stages. The cephalic space contained two lateral amphidial pits. The excretory pore in the third anterior part was observed in a ventral view of the larvae. No deirids were observed. The anus with a crescent-shape opening was located posteriorly. Phasmidial apertures, only observed in the third-stage larvae, opened on the lateral alae in the tail region. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Specimens of the rat hookworm, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nematoda) were recovered from lungs (third- and fourth-stage larvae) and intestine (fourth-stage larvae and adults). The following features were studied in the different stages by scanning electron microscopy: cephalic structures, especially sense organs, synlophe, cervical region, and caudal part. The main differences between the third and fourth stages concerned the lip-like structures around the oral aperture, the appearance of the cephalic space with the presence of a cephalic cap in fourth-stage larvae, the pattern of longitudinal ridges, and sexual differentiation. Pore-like papillae, not seen in third-stage larvae, developed in later stages. Deirids were observed only in adults, and phasmids were poorly discerned. Some of these morphological features, such as the cephalic sense organ apertures and cuticle pores and micropores, can be observed only by scanning electron microscop y. The possible functions of these different structures and their relationship with the behavior of the worms during their life cycle are discussed. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献
