Effects of disturbance on phosphorus turnover and plankton dynamics   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In coastal lagoons, one common type of anthropogenic disturbanceis opening of the sand barriers that isolate these lagoons fromthe sea. We investigated how a disturbance caused by an artificialopening of the sand barrier affects phytoplankton and bacterioplanktondynamics and alkaline phosphatase activities (APA) in a Braziliancoastal lagoon. We propose an index of potential phosphorusturnover time (PPTT) calculated as the ratio of total phosphorus(TP) and APA in an attempt to quantify the effect of disturbanceson phosphorus recycling within the plankton community. Openingthe barrier caused increased phytoplankton biomass, TP concentrations,APA and PPTT, and decreased bacteria to phytoplankton biomassratio. PPTT is easily calculated and may be used to detect planktonresponses to anthropogenic disturbances.  相似文献

  1. Although considered a key functional trait, little is known about how zooplankton feeding mode affects top‐down regulation of phytoplankton communities. Indeed, copepods are expected to promote the dominance of toxic phytoplankton by selective removal of their edible competitors; however, empirical evidence comparing the effect among calanoid and cyclopoid copepods is lacking.

We compared the top‐down effects of two copepods with contrasting feeding modes—the calanoid Notodiaptomus iheringi (current feeder) and the cyclopoid Thermocyclops decipiens (ambush feeder) — on the relative and absolute biomass of the filamentous cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis raciborskii co‐cultured with the nutritious eukaryotic phytoplankton Cryptomonas obovata in a week‐long laboratory assay.
  3. The current feeder had a stronger top‐down effect on the biomass of both prey throughout the experiment, with mass‐specific clearance rates 3–5× higher than ambush feeder. By the end of the experiment, the current feeder significantly reduced cyanobacteria biomass compared to controls while the ambush feeder did not. During the week‐long experiment, the current feeder switched from grazing on edible prey to cyanobacteria as the former became less abundant.
  4. Contrary to expectation, neither of the copepod species promoted cyanobacterial dominance by the end of the experiment. This is because both grazers, but especially the current feeder, initially increased but subsequently decreased the relative contribution of cyanobacteria to total phytoplankton biomass. Moreover, both copepods decreased the length of cyanobacteria filaments by c. 70%
  5. Current feeders can switch from edible prey to cyanobacteria when the abundance of shortened filaments surpasses the abundance of edible prey. While top‐down regulation of phytoplankton can be stronger for current feeding copepods, ambush feeding copepods can have a significant role during blooms by shortening cyanobacterial filaments. Hence, the broader role of contrasting copepod feeding traits on phytoplankton communities merits further study.

The tropical copepod Notodiaptomus iheringi (N. iheringi) is an ideal subject for studying zooplankton responses to cyanobacteria because it co-exists with permanent blooms across widespread regions in South America in high abundance. Single and mixed diets containing Cryptomonas and either a microcystin-producing (MC+) or microcystin-lacking (MC?) Microcystis were offered to N. iheringi at different proportions in a 10-day laboratory survival test to distinguish between the effects of toxicity versus nutrition. As expected, the pure MC+ Microcystis diet caused acute toxicity, indicated by high mortality compared to starved copepods. Both Microcystis strains were ingested in a 3-h short-term grazing experiment with pure diets. Despite its toxicity as the sole food source, survival was unaffected by MC+ Microcystis in mixed food diets. Even when MC+ Microcystis was 90% of the total food, survival was similar to the control with 10% Cryptomonas only. Hence, the survival in mixed food diets was controlled by the amount of Cryptomonas, not Microcystis. Previous reports show strong negative effects of Microcystis on copepod survival despite abundant high-quality food. Although this is the first example of copepods avoiding acute Microcystis toxicity in mixed diets, it could be a common trait where permanent blooms dominate the ecosystem.  相似文献

New management strategies should be identified to increase the potential of bioenergy crops to minimize climate change. This study quantified the impact of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) harvest systems, straw and soil management on carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes prior to crop replanting carried out on February 2010 in southern Brazil. The soil studied was classified as Haplustult (USDA Soil Taxonomy). Three sugarcane harvest systems were considered: burned (BH) and green harvest with straw maintained on (GH SM) or removed from (GH SR) the soil surface. Our hypothesis is that intensive tillage and the management of sugarcane crop straw could lead to higher CO2 emissions from soil. We measured CO2 emissions in no‐till (NT) conditions and after conventional tillage (CT), and with or without dolomite and agricultural gypsum applications. Soil CO2 emissions were measured with a Li Cor chamber (Model Li‐8100). Water content of soil and soil temperature readings were first taken 24 h after tillage, over the next 25 days after tillage with 18 measurement days. The removal of sugarcane straw from the soil surface resulted in the rapid reduction of water content of soil (6% in volume) followed by a 64% increase in soil CO2‐C emissions, supporting our hypothesis. Additional soil CO2‐C emissions caused by removal of crop straw were 253 kg CO2‐C ha?1, which is as high as CO2‐C losses induced by tillage. Dolomite and agricultural gypsum applications did not always increase CO2 emissions, especially when applied on soil surface with crop straw and tilled. The conversion from burned to green harvest systems can improve the soil C sequestration rate in sugarcane crops when combined with reduced tillage and straw maintenance on soil surface. The effect of straw removal and related CO2 emission for electricity generation should be considered in further studies from sugarcane areas.  相似文献

Soil CO2 emissions are highly variable, both spatially and across time, with significant changes even during a one-day period. The objective of this study was to compare predictions of the diurnal soil CO2 emissions in an agricultural field when estimated by ordinary kriging and sequential Gaussian simulation. The dataset consisted of 64 measurements taken in the morning and in the afternoon on bare soil in southern Brazil. The mean soil CO2 emissions were significantly different between the morning (4.54 ??mol m?2 s?1) and afternoon (6.24 ??mol m?2 s?1) measurements. However, the spatial variability structures were similar, as the models were spherical and had close range values of 40.1 and 40.0 m for the morning and afternoon semivariograms. In both periods, the sequential Gaussian simulation maps were more efficient for the estimations of emission than ordinary kriging. We believe that sequential Gaussian simulation can improve estimations of soil CO2 emissions in the field, as this property is usually highly non-Gaussian distributed.  相似文献
