The present study was carried out in the marine area of Stratoni, Greece, where two seahorse species are present (Hippocampus hippocampus and Hippocampus guttulatus). Two surveys were conducted (September 2016 and May 2019) to gather information regarding seahorse species' abundance, distribution and habitat characteristics. Four different seahorse natural and artificial habitat types were identified. The results revealed that the presence of H. hippocampus was relatively high, especially at sites with artificial structures, whereas the presence of H. guttulatus was rare. Data collected can provide baseline information for future population assessments. 相似文献

An attempt is made to compare the results of different rapid biodiversity assessment techniques at the pan-Mediterranean, sectorial and local levels. A uniform multivariate pattern exists at the pan-Mediterranean and national (sectorial) levels: lagoons can be different when they host only a few species, but as species numbers increase, lagoons become homogenous in composition. Multivariate techniques cannot distinguish anthropogenically-impacted lagoons from those, which are naturally disturbed. In the pan-Mediterranean context it is the higher taxonomic levels, but in the national and local context it is the most abundant macrobenthic groups (polychaetes, molluscs and crustaceans) and meiobenthos which provide patterns closest to that derived from the species level. Taxonomic distinctness indices applied to polychaete and mollusc inventories provide meaningful results at most levels and scales of observation. These indices seem to be robust enough to discriminate anthropogenically impacted from naturally disturbed lagoons. 相似文献

The effects of 0, 1.5 and 3 KGy gamma-irradiation on Brown Rot disease affecting Golden Delicious apples are investigated.
The apples were artificially inoculated with Monilinia fructigena fungus before and after irradiation. Results show clearly
that radiation induces a delay in fungus development, even when it is not directly affected. The effect of radiation on the
apples' substrate seems to be considerable, being the main factor affecting fungal growth. Radiation doses of 1.5 and 3 KGy
do not seem to produce strong differences in the fungal growth. Irradiation, however, is very effective, producing important
changes of practical interest for apples infected before or after irradiation.

This paper discusses the design and implementation of a citizen science pilot project, COMBER (Citizens' Network for the Observation of Marine BiodivERsity, http://www.comber.hcmr.gr), which has been initiated under the ViBRANT EU e-infrastructure. It is designed and implemented for divers and snorkelers who are interested in participating in marine biodiversity citizen science projects. It shows the necessity of engaging the broader community in the marine biodiversity monitoring and research projects, networks and initiatives. It analyses the stakeholders, the industry and the relevant markets involved in diving activities and their potential to sustain these activities. The principles, including data policy and rewards for the participating divers through their own data, upon which this project is based are thoroughly discussed. The results of the users analysis and lessons learned so far are presented. Future plans include promotion, links with citizen science web developments, data publishing tools, and development of new scientific hypotheses to be tested by the data collected so far. 相似文献

The notion of sustainability is used widely at the policy level, but only few approaches deal with its measurement, especially at the local level. Here, we develop and apply a practical tool for the estimation of the sustainability state at the island level with the use of indicators selected and adapted from international agencies and institutes, in a framework which is an expanded version of the DPSR approach. The identification of the significant sustainability state factors and the selection of the indicators are based on areas’ characteristics, namely their insularity and the fact that they are in the Mediterranean. The values of these indicators were obtained or calculated for the islands of Paros and Kos in Greece. The findings reveal that the method can be of great use for the sustainability evaluation and for planning the sustainable development of islands. 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to test the performance of rapid biodiversity assessment techniques in the lagoonal environment
at the pan-Mediterranean scale. The multivariate techniques can produce patterns of lagoonal biodiversity along the Mediterranean.
Additionally, it is shown that the polychaete inventory can preferably be used rather than the aggregation of information
at the family level for the purposes of rapid biodiversity assessment. These techniques, however, appear to be weak for the
environmental assessment because they cannot detect differences between the naturally disturbed and the anthropogenically
impacted lagoons. Both taxonomic distinctness indices are found to be robust in providing meaningful results for rapid biodiversity/environmental
assessment when the crustacean inventory and the polychaete and molluscan ones are used for the estimation of the average
taxonomic distinctness and of the variation in taxonomic distinctness values, correspondingly. Conversely, information on
the distribution of the macrofaunal species to the Mediterranean lagoons appears to be inadequate for the needs of such rapid
biodiversity assessment at a regional scale. It is suggested that information on ecological convergence of the macrofaunal
species would probably provide biodiversity indices with additional power, at least in the lagoonal environment. 相似文献

Certain antibodies (Abs) elicited using the cardiac glycoside digoxin (digoxigenin tridigitoxoside) bind preferentially to analogs that differ from digoxin by substitutions on the cardenolide rings, the lactone, or by the presence or absence of attached sugars. Antibody 26-10 binds equally well to digoxin and digitoxin, which differ only by the presence in the former and the absence in the latter of an hydroxyl group at C12. Other antidigoxin Abs, however, can distinguish between these ligands by three orders of magnitude in binding. Inspection of the structure of Fab 26-10 complexed with digoxin shows a gap in complementarity in the region between the digoxin O12 and LCDR3. We proposed that insertions in LCDR3 might result in Abs that bind digitoxin preferentially. We produced libraries of mutants displayed on bacteriophage which were randomized at LCDR3 and contained LCDR3 insertions. Mutants were selected by panning against digoxin and analogs. The mutants bound digitoxin preferentially up to 47-fold greater than digoxin. The mutants that bound well to digitoxin demonstrated a consensus sequence including the substitution of Trp at position L:94. Using site-directed mutagenesis, the binding to digitoxin was shown to be maximized by the combination of an insertion and L:Trp94 mutation, moving the L 94 side chain closer to digoxin. We also selected mutants that bound preferentially to gitoxin, which, like digitoxin, lacks the 12-hydroxyl, increasing relative binding to gitoxin up to 600-fold compared to the unmutated Ab 26-10. 相似文献
