Seed germination of Melaleuca ericifolia (swamp paperbark) is delayed by submergence in water but the final percentage germination after removing seeds from water is unaffected; some seeds will germinate and the cotyledons emerge whilst submerged. Germination is totally inhibited at salinities of 14% and a population which naturally occurs adjacent to coastal saltmarsh was inhibited more by salinities of 6–12% than two other populations from freshwater habitats. Seedling growth may be increased by water-logging conditions and the degree of response differs for different seed sources. Inundation stimulates root growth and new roots are thick and aerenchymatous. Root systems in the field run horizontally and are shallow, apparently being restricted by clay at depth. All populations studied showed a similar seedling growth-response to salinity treatments; growth declined at salinities ≤ 13% and was severely restricted at 21%, although no seedlings died after 48 days’exposure to the latter treatment.  相似文献

Water plays an important role in DNA structure and desiccation of microorganisms has been correlated with breaks in their DNA. The fourth-stage juveniles of the anabiotic nematode Ditylenchus dipsaci can lose up to 90% of their body water and survive in a dehydrated state for long periods of time; however, there was no increase in the frequency of breaks in DNA isolated from anabiotic as opposed to hydrated juveniles. Desiccation of the non-anabiotic nematode Panagrellus redivivus similarly did not lead to an increased frequency of DNA breaks, nor did the polyol glycerol significantly effect DNA stability. The stability of DNA during tissue desiccation, like the stability of proteins, seems to be a general feature of biological material and not a unique property of anabiotic organisms.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The growth and recession of macrophytes on a shaded section of the R. Lambourn were documented by a mapping procedure. With the exception of Ranunculus spp., the changes in total cover did not indicate directly the pattern of growth and recession of the macrophyles. Analysis of gross changes, expressed as gains and losses on cover, indicated that colonization of gravel and silt by the dominant macrophyte, Berula erecta, did not vary seasonally. Colonization was at a constant rate of about 8% of the site each month throughout the year and this accounted for 50% of the total number of gains by Berula. Gains of Berula from Ranunculus showed an annual cycle with a maximum during the summer when Ranunculus was in recession. Gains of Berula from Callitriche spp. also varied annually but the maximum was during the autumn. Total losses of Berula were at a constant rate throughout the year but were to gravel and silt during the winter, to Ranunculus in spring and early summer and to Callitriche in late summer and autumn. Analysis of loss of Berula with time indicated that the position of the Berula carpet was constantly changing. The growth and recession of Berula could not be linked in a meaningful way to environmental variables. Callitriche and Ranunculus both showed an annual pattern of growth and recession. There was temporal separation of the two macrophytes with Ranunculus growing mainly in spring and early summer and Callitriche showing maximum growth in late summer and autumn, and some evidence of spatial separation. The observed differences between years in the growth of Callitriche could not be attributed to any of the environmental variables measured. Discharge was thought to be an important variable controlling the growth of Ranunculus since increase of Ranunculus in the spring was positively correlated with the mean discharge at that time. In years when discharge was low, the growth of Rununculus appeared to be restricted by shading from epiphytic algae which accumulated on the plant surfaces under these conditions.  相似文献

1. The vertical migration behaviour in electrophoretically distinguishable clones of Daphnia magna Straus was investigated. 2. Clones differed significantly in their tendency to stay near the surface of the tank during the light phase of the daily light/dark cycle, indicating that vertical migration has a genetic component. 3. There was a significant difference in behaviour between juvenile and adult Daphnia: overall the juveniles stayed closer to the water surface than the adults, but the characteristic pattern of clonal differences persisted in the juveniles. 4. When an adult population of each clone was exposed to a fish predator in an experimental tank, the position a clone maintained in the tank at the start of the day had a direct effect on its survival. Clones remaining near to the surface of the water suffered greatest predarion.  相似文献

1. Neonicotinoid insecticides are potent neurotoxins of significant economic importance. However, it is clear that their use can adversely impact beneficial insects in the environment, even at low, sub‐lethal doses. 2. It has recently been shown that the neonicotinoid imidacloprid disrupts adaptive sex allocation in the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis (Walker) by limiting their ability to respond to the presence of other females on oviposition patches. In the present study, that work was extended to explore whether sex allocation when superparasitising – laying eggs on a host that has already been parasitised – is also disrupted by imidacloprid. 3. Under superparasitism, sex allocation theory predicts that females should vary their offspring sex ratio in relation to their relative clutch size. It was found that sex allocation under superparasitism in Nasonia is disrupted in a dose‐dependent manner, with exposed females producing more daughters. 4. Importantly, imidacloprid does not appear to influence the ability of females to estimate the number of eggs already present on a host, suggesting a disassociation between the sex ratio and clutch size cues. 5. The present work highlights the fitness costs to beneficial insects of exposure to neonicotinoids, but also provides clues as to how female Nasonia use information when allocating sex.  相似文献

Native Australian species of Collembola dominated natural pasture in numbers of species present and in abundance, while introduced Collembola dominated fertilized pasture sown to exotic species. Those collembolan species which were restricted to one pasture type only were mainly epigeal and hemiedaphic species of the herbage and litter. Increased grazing by sheep decreased species richness and increased uniformity of Collembola in both pasture types. The abundance of introduced Collembola was positively associated with phosphorus content of litter.  相似文献

Abstract: Paddock trees are a common feature in the agricultural landscapes of Australia. Recent studies have demonstrated the value of scattered paddock trees for soil fertility, native pasture plants and arboreal faunas; however, the degree to which scattered paddock trees contribute to the conservation of terrestrial invertebrate biodiversity within grazed landscapes remains unknown. We ask three questions: (i) Is there a difference between the terrestrial invertebrate assemblages found under paddock trees compared with surrounding grazed native pastures? (ii) Can gradients in soil and litter variables from the base of trees explain patterns in invertebrate assemblages? and (iii) Does the presence of scattered paddock trees have implications for the conservation of terrestrial invertebrate biodiversity within grazed native pastures? We used pitfall trapping and extraction from soil cores to sample the invertebrate assemblages under six New England Peppermint trees (Eucalyptus nova‐anglica Deane and Maiden) and compared them with assemblages sampled from the open paddock. Formicidae and Collembola univariate and multivariate data were analysed along with a range of soil and litter variables. We found (i) significant differences in the assemblages of invertebrates under trees compared with surrounding grazed pastures; (ii) that most soil and litter variables revealed gradients away from tree bases and these variables explained significant variation in invertebrate assemblages; and (iii) more native invertebrates and more species of invertebrates were found under trees compared with the surrounding pastures. We discuss the relationships between paddock trees, the ground and soil environments and the invertebrate communities that inhabit these environments, and conclude with a discussion of the future for paddock trees and the biota supported by them.  相似文献
