Ecological causes of sex-biased parasitism in threespine stickleback   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Males and females can differ in levels of parasitism and such differences may be mediated by the costs of sexual selection or by ecological differences between the genders. In threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus , males exhibit paternal care and territorial nest defence and the costs of reproduction may be particularly high for males relative to females. We monitored levels of parasitism for 15 years in a population of stickleback infected by four different parasite species. Consistent with general predictions, overall parasite prevalence (total parasitism) was greater in males than in females. However, this excess did not occur for each species of parasite. Males had higher prevalence of a cestode Cyathocephalus truncatus and a trematode Bunodera sp. relative to females, while females had higher prevalence of a cestode Schistocephalus solidus and nematodes. This suggested ecological sources to differences in parasitism rather than reproductive costs and therefore we examined diet of unparasitized stickleback, predicting that differences in dietary niche would influence relative parasitism. This was partially confirmed and showed that female stomach contents had increased frequency of pelagic items, the major habitat for the primary host of S. solidus whereas males exhibited increased frequency of benthic items, the dominant habitat of C. truncatus and Bunodera. Temporal shifts in the extent and direction of differential parasitism among years between the sexes were associated with temporal shifts in dietary differences. Our results, combined with those in the literature, suggest that ecological differences between genders could be a more important component to patterns of parasitic infection in natural populations than currently appreciated.  相似文献

Reinforcement speciation is the process whereby selection against hybrids drives the evolution of enhanced pre‐mating reproductive isolation. Work has focused on divergent mating preferences (assortative mating) but pre‐mating isolation can also arise via various migration modification behaviours, such as divergent habitat preferences. The relative importance of these two different mechanisms of reinforcement remains unclear. A recent theoretical model (Yukilevich–True model) found that relative fixation probabilities between these mechanisms can vary. Additionally, natural populations of Timema cristinae walking‐sticks exhibit variation (polymorphism) in both mechanisms, generating questions about the patterns expected for allele frequencies prior to fixation, during the early stages of the speciation process. In the present study, we report: (1) new analyses examining the correlation between fixation probabilities for assortative mating and migration modification in the Yukilevich–True model; (2) novel simulations examining allele frequencies in polymorphic populations; and (3) empirical patterns of reinforcement in T. cristinae in the context of theoretical predictions. Simulations of both types yielded congruent results, revealing that the outcome of reinforcement was dependent on the strength of selection. Under weak selection, reinforcement by either mechanism is unlikely. Under intermediate selection, the conditions favoring the rise and fixation of one mechanism favored the rise and fixation of the other. However, assortative mating evolved somewhat more readily than migration modification. Populations of T. cristinae, which experience such intermediate selection, supported these predictions. Under strong selection, the evolution of migration modification generally interfered with the evolution of assortative mating by decreasing migration between populations, thereby reducing selection for assortative mating. Congruence of the results for allele frequencies versus fixation probabilities suggests that similar patterns of reinforcement are expected during different stages of the speciation process. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 305–319.  相似文献

The overall pattern of morphological variation and genetic diversity (allozyme analysis) was studied in the Hieracium nigrescens group (H. nigrescens s.l., H. alpinumH. murorum) in the Sudety Mountains and the Western Carpathians. A morphological analysis was performed on 180 plants from 12 populations belonging to six a priori distinguished taxa. Altogether, 25 characters were measured or scored. Morphometric (canonical discriminant analysis) data separated five taxa, evaluated here at the species rank: H. chrysostyloides, H. decipiens, H. nigrescens (all from the Sudety Mountains), H. jarzabczynum, and H. vapenicanum (the Western Carpathians). A distinct local population from Mount Babia hora (the Western Carpathians) comprised a further possible taxon, given the preliminary name ‘H. babiagorense’. Genetic diversity was studied in 17 populations of H. chrysostyloides, H. decipiens, H. jarzabczynum, H. nigrescens, H. vapenicanum and ‘H. babiagorense’ using five enzyme systems. All a priori recognized species were proved to be genetically homogeneous, each consisting of one unique multilocus allozyme genotype, except ‘H. babiagorense’ which shared the same genotype with H. jarzabczynum. For the first time, a chromosome number is reported for H. vapenicanum (2n = 3x = 27) and previously published numbers were confirmed for H. chrysostyloides (2n = 5x = 45), H. decipiens (2n = 4x = 36), H. jarzabczynum (2n = 4x = 36), H. koprovanum (2n = 4x = 36), and H. nigrescens (2n = 4x = 36). All species have been shown to be endemic to either the Sudety Mountains or the Western Carpathians. Except for the species studied, two further ones (H. apiculatum, H. nivimontis) are recognized in the area, giving a total of seven species from the Hieracium nigrescens group in the area studied. The morphologically slightly different local population from Mount Babia hora/Babia Góra (‘H. babiagorense’) requires further study. Two new combinations are proposed: Hieracium jarzabczynum (Paw?. & Zahn) Mráz & Chrtek f. and Hieracium vapenicanum (Lengyel & Zahn) Chrtek f. & Mráz. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 153 , 287–300.  相似文献

Mayr's best recognized scientific contributions include the biological species concept and the theory of geographic speciation. In the latter, reproductive isolation evolves as an incidental by‐product of genetic divergence between allopatric populations. Mayr noted that divergent natural selection could accelerate speciation, but also argued that gene flow so strongly retards divergence that, even with selection, non‐allopatric speciation is unlikely. However, current theory and data demonstrate that substantial divergence, and even speciation, in the face of gene flow is possible. Here, I attempt to connect some opposing views about speciation by integrating Mayr's ideas about the roles of ecology and geography in speciation with current data and theory. My central premise is that the speciation process (i.e. divergence) is often continuous, and that the opposing processes of selection and gene flow interact to determine the degree of divergence (i.e. the degree of progress towards the completion of speciation). I first establish that, in the absence of gene flow, divergent selection often promotes speciation. I then discuss how population differentiation in the face of gene flow is common when divergent selection occurs. However, such population differentiation does not always lead to the evolution of discontinuities, strong reproductive isolation, and thus speciation per se. I therefore explore the genetic and ecological circumstances that facilitate speciation in the face of gene flow. For example, particular genetic architectures or ecological niches may tip the balance between selection and gene flow strongly in favour of selection. The circumstances allowing selection to overcome gene flow to the extent that a discontinuity develops, and how often these circumstances occur, are major remaining questions in speciation research. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 26–46.  相似文献

The electrophysiological properties of cultured human melanocytes were investigated using the whole-cell configuration of the patch-clamp technique. Depolarizations to membrane potentials more positive than -30 mV resulted in the rapid development (<1 ms to peak) of an inward current. The maximum peak current was observed at +10 mV and reached an average amplitude of about 270 pA. During the depolarizations, the current inactivated with a time constant of about 2 ms. The current was abolished by the addition of 0.3 μM tetrodotoxin, a blocker of voltage-gated Na+-channels, and disappeared when Na+ was omitted from the extracellular medium. In addition, the melanocytes contain at least two types of outward K+-current. The first type, observed in every cell, was highly sensitive (Ki 1 mM) to the K+-channel blocker TEA, required depolarizations beyond zero to be activated and did not inactivate. The second type was less regularly observed (10% of the cells). This current activated at more negative voltages (–20 mV), was resistant to TEA (20 mM) but was blocked by 2 mM 4-aminopyridine and inactivated rapidly during depolarizations. We conclude that human melanocytes are equipped with voltage-dependent Na+-channels, a delayed rectifying K+-current and a K+-current similar to the A-current in neurones.  相似文献

Sympatric speciation remains controversial. ‘Sympatry’ originally meant “in the same geographical area”. Recently, evolutionists have redefined ‘sympatric speciation’ non‐spatially to require panmixia (m = 0.5) between a pair of demes before onset of reproductive isolation. Although panmixia is a suitable starting point in models of speciation, it is not a useful definition of sympatry in natural populations, because it becomes virtually impossible to find or demonstrate sympatry in nature. The newer, non‐spatial definition fails to address the classical debate about whether natural selection within a geographic overlap regularly causes speciation in nature, or whether complete geographic isolation is usually required. We therefore propose a more precise spatial definition by incorporating the population genetics of dispersal (or ‘cruising range’). Sympatric speciation is considerably more likely under this spatial definition than under the demic definition, because distance itself has a powerful structuring effect, even over small spatial scales comparable to dispersal. Ecological adaptation in two‐dimensional space often acts as a ‘magic trait’ that causes pleiotropic reductions of gene flow. We provide examples from our own research.  相似文献

Multiannual cycles in the abundance of voles and other animals have been collapsing in the last decades. It has been proposed that this phenomenon is ‘climatically forced’ by milder winters. We here consider the dynamics of bank and field voles during more than two decades in two localities (170 km apart) in southern Finland. Using wavelet analysis, we show that a clear 3‐year cycle disappeared in the mid 1990s. However, the vole cycle returned in both localities after about 5 years despite winters becoming increasingly milder. In both localities, vole cycles were mainly determined by bank voles after the period of noncyclic dynamics, whereas field voles were dominant before this irregularity. Wavelet coherency analysis shows that spatial synchrony temporarily broke down during the period of noncyclic dynamics, but was fully restored afterwards. The return of the cycle despite ongoing rapid climate change argues against ‘climatic forcing’ as a general explanation for loss of cycles. Rather, the population‐dynamical consequences of climate change may be dependent on the local species composition and mechanism of delayed density dependence.  相似文献

1. In a correlative study, we investigated the relative importance of fish predation, refuge availability and resource supply in determining the abundance and size distributions of the introduced and omnivorous signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) in lakes and streams. Moreover, the biomass and food selection of predatory fish was estimated in each habitat type and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen were measured in perch (Perca fluviatilis), the dominant predator in the lakes, and in its potential food sources (crayfish, juvenile roach and isopods). 2. In lakes, crayfish were the most frequent prey in large perch (46%), followed by other macroinvertebrates (26%, including the isopod Asellus aquaticus) and small fish (25%). Crayfish and fish dominated the gut contents of large perch with respect to biomass. Nitrogen signatures showed that perch were one trophic level above crayfish (approx. 3.4‰) and a two‐source mixing model using nitrogen isotope values indicated that crayfish (81%) contributed significantly more to perch isotope values than did juvenile roach (19%). A positive correlation was found between the abundance of crayfish and the biomass of large perch. Crayfish abundance in lakes was also positively correlated with the proportion of cobbles in the littoral zone. Lake productivity (chlorophyll a) was positively correlated with crayfish size, but not with crayfish abundance. 3. In streams, brown trout (Salmo trutta) were the most abundant predatory fish. Gut contents of large trout in a forested stream showed that terrestrial insects were the most frequently found prey (60%), followed by small crayfish (27%) and isopods (27%). In contrast to lakes, the relative abundance of crayfish was negatively correlated with the total biomass of predatory fish and with total biomass of trout. However, abundance of crayfish at sites with a low biomass of predatory fish varied considerably and was related to substratum grain size, with fewer crayfish being caught when the substratum was sandy or dominated by large boulders. The mean size of crayfish was greater at stream sites with a high standing stock of periphyton, but neither predator biomass nor substratum grain size was correlated with crayfish size. 4. Our results suggest that bottom‐up processes influence crayfish size in lakes and streams independent of predator biomass and substratum availability. However, bottom‐up processes do not influence crayfish abundance. Instead, substratum availability (lakes) and interactions between predation and substratum grain size (streams) need to be considered in order to predict crayfish abundance.  相似文献

1. We experimentally tested if a multiplicative risk model accurately predicted the consumption of a common mayfly at risk of predation from three predator species in New Zealand streams. Deviations between model predictions and experimental observations were interpreted as indicators of ecologically important interactions between predators. 2. The predators included a drift‐feeding fish [brown trout (T), Salmo trutta], a benthivorous fish [galaxiid (G), koaro, Galaxias brevipennis] and a benthic predatory stonefly (S; Stenoperla sp.) with Deleatidium sp. mayflies as prey. Eight treatments with all predator species combinations and a predator‐free control were used. Experiments were performed in aquaria with cobbles as predator refuges for mayflies and we measured the proportion of prey consumed after 6 h for both day and night trials. 3. Trout consumed a higher proportion of prey than other predators. For the two predator treatments we found less than expected prey consumption in the galaxiid + trout treatment (G + T) for both day and night trials, whereas a higher than expected proportion of prey was consumed during night time in the stonefly + trout (S + T) treatment. 4. The results indicate interference (G + T) and facilitation (S + T) between predators depending on predator identity and time of day. Thus, to make accurate predictions of interspecific interactions, it is necessary to consider the ecology of individual species and how differences influence the direction and magnitude of interactions.  相似文献
