Within the Murinae (Muridae: Rodentia), the African rats of the Praomys group, whose systematics has been studied through different approaches, have raised numerous taxonomic problems. Different taxa related to Praomys have successively been described, among which Mastomys, Myomys and Hylomyscus were considered either as separate genera or subgenera of Praomys. In order to clarify the relationships within the Praomys group, we conducted a series of DNA/DNA hybridization experiments involving different species of Praomys, Mastomys, Myomys and Hylomyscus plus other Murinae and a Cricetomyinae. This study indicates that the Praomys complex is a monophyletic entity clearly separated from the other African and Asian Murinae. If Mastomys and Hylomyscus appeared to be independent genera, the taxonomic situation of Praomys and Myomys is more difficult to ascertain. Indeed, Praomys tullbergi appears more closely related to Myomys daltoni than to another species of Praomys , namely P. jacksoni , suggesting paraphyly for Praomys. Furthermore, P. jacksoni is as distant from P. tullbergi as from any species of Mastomys. Additional species of Praomys and, especially, of Myomys , are needed for reaching a definitive conclusion on these latter taxa. The Praomys group is more related to Mus than to Rattus. To calibrate our molecular distances with geological time, we used a dating of 10 Myr for the Musi Rattus dichotomy. The inferred rate of molecular evolution suggests a dating of c. 8 Myr for the separation of the Praomys group from the Mus lineage.  相似文献

In the Silky Fowl (SF) breed of chicken, most of the internal organs are infiltrated with melanocytes. Previous studies have shown that this generalized mesodermal pigmentation is not due to a cell autonomous abnormality of the melanocytes but to environmental factors able to promote both the homing of pigment cell precursors in abnormal embryonic sites and their proliferation and differentiation. To analyse the mode of these environmental cues, we tested the effect of SF embryo extract (SFEE) on cultured quail neural crest cells as compared with that of EE from normal chickens of the JA57 strain (JA57EE). We found that SFEE enhances crest cell proliferation as judged by 3H-TdR incorporation and cell counting. In contrast, no effect of SFEE was observed either on the proportion of cultured cells that are engaged into the melanocytic differentiation pathway or on the amount of melanin produced by each differentiated pigment cell. The simple observation, however, reveals that SFEE has a significant effect on pigmentation of the cultured quail neural crest cells. This effect has therefore to be accounted for by the general increase in cell number induced by SFEE. The question is raised as to whether the in vivo SF phenotype is generated exclusively by this mechanism.  相似文献

The genus Mus encompasses 38 species of mice divided into four subgenera: Mus , Pyromys , Nannomys and Coelomys . Each of these four taxa is characterized by discrete morphological as well as biochemical traits. We used two different molecular approaches to determine the relationships between these subgenera: DNA/DNA hybridization and 12S rRNA mitochondrial sequences. We compared the resulting phylogenies from each method and with phylogenies derived from morphological data. The degree of resolution of each molecular approach is discussed. The two molecular studies indicate that Mus , Pyromys , Nannomys and Coelomys are clearly distinct monophyletic groups, as previously indicated by morphological data and other biochemical and molecular approaches. There is one divergence between previous morphological and the molecular and morphological studies presented here: the position of the Indian species Mus famulus . This taxon, which was formerly included in the subgenus Coelomys , is demonstrated here to belong to the subgenus Mus. We also propose the following relationships within Mus sensu lato : Mus and Pyromys are the closest relatives, followed by Nannomys and Coelomys , whose relationships are still unclear. This arrangement is more robustly supported by DNA/DNA hybridization than by 12S rRNA data. The genus Mus encompasses at least 38 species divided into four subgenera: Mus , Pyromys , Nannomys and Coelomys . The subgenus Mus , which comprises the house mouse and related species, is by far the most extensively studied, although the subgenus Nannomys is the most speciose. Although the relationships within the subgenus Mus are rather well characterized, those between subgenera are still unclear. In the present study, phylogenetic analyses of the whole genus were performed using a larger species sample of Nannomys than in previous studies, and a nuclear gene (IRBP) in addition to mitochondrial data (cytochrome b and 12S rRNA). Members of the Acomyinae and Murinae were used as outgroups. Separate and combined analyses were performed with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods, and divergence times were estimated. The results showed that the monophyly of the genus Mus and of each subgenus was strongly supported by the three genes and the combined analysis. The phylogenies derived from the three genes were on the whole congruent; however, several conflicting topologies were observed such as the relationships between the three Asian species of the subgenus Mus ( caroli , cervicolor and cookii ). Increasing the taxonomic sampling of Nannomys did not satisfactorily improve the resolution of relationships between the four subgenera. Both human‐mediated introductions and climatic changes may promote the settlement of species in new areas outside of their natural geographical range. To investigate the settlement of recently established populations of the neogastropod Cyclope neritea, we developed eight microsatellite markers. Their usefulness was studied in two native populations previously found to be monomorphic with mitochondrial markers. The eight loci were found to be polymorphic in both populations, with two to 18 alleles per locus. This result shows promise for these loci in studies of recently founded populations of C. neritea.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. At Eastern Pacific hydrothermal vents, alvinellidpolychaetes are among the first metazoans to colonize newlyformed surfaces of sulfide chimneys. In this environment ofrapid mineral precipitation, alvinellids are confronted by steepphysico-chemical gradients and high temporalvariability. Thispaper examines the interaction of alvinellids with chimney mineralizationprocesses and then reviews what is known of mechanisms thatcould enable these worms to deal with potentially toxic levelsof sulfide in their environment. Studies of sulfide chimneysconsistently show mineralogy to be locally modified around alvinellidtubes. This may be linked to sulfide oxidation products thataccumulate in tube material or to the circulation of seawaterthrough the tube. At high worm densities, these local effectsmay have a significant influence on larger scale sulfide accretionprocesses that determine chimney morphology. Alvinellid polychaetesmay have several lines of defense against sulfide. Tubes andmucous layers could act as passive barriers to reduce inwarddiffusion of sulfide across posterior surfaces. Colonizationof epidermal and tube surfaces by bacteria that might be sulfideoxidizing, could create an active external barrier in some species.Sulfide oxidation by tissue homogenates has been demonstratedin two Paralvinella species, where it may serve to protect oxidativerespiration from sulfide entering worm tissues. Sulfide bindingin blood has not been studied in any of the alvinellids.  相似文献

  • 1 We tested the effects of food, in the form of leaf litter, and density on population growth and fitness correlates of the tree hole mosquito Aedes triseriatus. Our field experiment used a 2 x 2 randomized block design, with three holes as blocks. In cages within three holes, we manipulated densities of Aedes triseriatus larvae, and presence of leaf litter. Our laboratory experiment used a 2 x 3 factorial design in which we also manipulated densities of larvae and availability of leaf litter within similar cages (inside, outside, or absent). For both experiments we determined effects on survival, days to and mass at eclosion of both sexes, and a composite index of population performance λ′, that estimates finite rate of increase.
  • 2 In the field experiment, we found significant and large effects of leaf litter and of density on the performance of A. triseriatus. The effect of density did not depend on leaf litter availability. We documented significant variation among tree holes for most correlates of fitness. Often, the effects of treatments varied significantly depending on the tree hole tested.
  • 3 In the laboratory experiment we found significant effects of density and litter, and that direct browsing on leaf litter is necessary for the effect of litter on performance of A. triseriatus. In the laboratory, the negative effect of increased density was dependent on leaf litter availability.
  • 4 Our results demonstrate that leaf litter has important effects on population performance of tree hole mosquitoes in natural tree holes. Direct browsing on the surface of leaf litter is the most likely mechanism by which litter enhances population growth. The impact of litter on populations varies among tree holes.
