To test the hypothesis that gibberellic acid (GA) sensitivityaffects the length of the extension zone (LEZ) of leaf No. 1of wheat seedlings, we performed a gene dosage experiment usingRht dwarfing genes that condition GA insensitivity. We utilizednearly isogenic lines, at Rht-dosage levels of 0, 2 and 4 alleles.Anatomical markers (distances between successive stomates) wereused to infer the distribution of growth along the axis of theleaf. Interstomatal distance (ISD) and LEZ were inverse linearfunctions of Rht-dosage. The number of stomates matured perhour was independent of Rht-dosage. The relationship betweenISD and distance along the axis within the extension zone (EZ)was indistinguishable from linear. Rht-dosage did not affectthe slope of the regression of ISD against distance along theEZ. A-REST (AR; ancymidol, a potent GA synthesis inhibitor)reduced LEZ. Wild type was more sensitive to AR than doubledwarf. AR affected growth of leaf No. 1 more than length ofthe coleoptile, regardless of Rht-dosage. Onoclea sensibilis gametophytes were grown from spores on ashedsoil and agar to determine if the spontaneous formation of antheridiacan be blocked by light. Under most conditions, dark-grown gametophytesformed antheridia later than or at the same time as gametophytesgrown in the light. Under no circumstances was there a rapidonset of maleness in the dark. These results contradict thehypothesis that, in Onoclea, antheridiogen is required to inducemaleness because light inhibits the formation of antheridia.In the light, antheridia formed on heart-shaped thalli. In darkness,antheridia formed on filamentous gametophytes. The timing ofonset of maleness was affected by temperature and the presenceof sucrose. The primary vascular system of the rootstock of Viola rotundifolia,V. odorata and V. cucullata consists of an open system of threesympodia, corresponding to three orthostichies (parastichies)of leaves in the 1 /3 phyllotaxy. Between the major, collateralbundles there are vascular strands consisting of only primaryphloem. The vascular supply to axillary buds developing in thefirst season of growth is the same in flowering and vegetativebuds and there is a homology between the bracts on the pedunclesof axillary flowers and the prophylls of the axillary vegetativebranches. The overwintering portions of the rootstocks are somewhatwoody. The uneven development of secondary xylem correspondsto the locations of the sympodia. Secondary xylem closes a leafgap of a median trace only slowly, but any gap in the phloicsystem is closed quickly by secondary growth. Biomechanical and morphometric comparisons among coleoptilesfrom wheat seedlings differing in Rht gene-dosage (Rht = 0,2, 4 doses) are presented in an effort to evaluate the influenceof Rht on the mechanics of soil penetration by this organ. Rhtis known to reduce seedling establishment compared to the wildtype. Data from 3–7-day-old seedlings indicate that Rhtreduces tissue elastic modulus E, increases the second momentof area I, and decreases the slenderness ratio (l/r) of coleoptiles.Rht-relatedchanges in E and I are such that the flexural stiffness of coleoptilesfrom Rht plants does not differ significantly from the wildtype-hence the growing coleoptiles of all three genotypes haveequivalent biomechanical capacity to penetrate the soil. Rhtreduction of coleoptile slenderness ratios confers a capacityto safely sustain higher axial compressive loads compared tocoleoptiles with equivalent flexural stiffness but higher ratios.However, wild type seedlings produce longer coleoptiles andlonger subcrown internodes than Rht seedlings. Longer coleoptilesdeliver the crown node closer to the top of the soil beforethe crown node extends beyond the lateral confinement of thecoleoptile. This reduces the potential for buckling of the subcrowninternode and leaves due to the compressive loading of soil.Rht affects a variety of mechanical features whose influenceis dependent upon the stage of seedling growth and the degreeof soil compaction. However, at equivalent depths of burialwhich exceed the maximum length of coleoptiles and moderatesoil compaction, Rht is biomechanically disadvantageous to seedlingestablishment. The gibberellin insensitivity genes, Rht1 and Rht2, reducedepidermal cell lengths in leaves of isogenic lines of field-and laboratory-grown wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Rht dosagesof zero (wild type), two (semi-dwarf) and four alleles (doubledwarf) had a linear negative effect on cell length in flag leavesof field-grown plants, and in the sheaths and blades of leafnumber 1 in laboratory grown plants. Decrease in cell length,rather than reduced cell number, accounted for most to all ofthe reduction in blade and sheath length. In sheaths, cell widthincreased with Rht dosage, but not sufficiently to compensatefor decreased length in determining average projected surfacearea. Rates of extension of leaf number 1 in laboratory-grownplants were negatively and linearly correlated with Rht dosage.Maximal growth rate was maintained longer in wild type thanin double dwarf, but the total duration of measurable extensionin leaf number 1 was not affected by Rht dosage. The calyptra influences the plane of division in guard cellmother cells of Funaria and Physcomitrium. Normally, capsulesexpand while sheathed by the calyptra and the axes of the stomataare parallel to the axis of the capsule in both genera. Removalof the calyptra from an elongating sporophyte leads to setathickening prior to capsule expansion and an essentially randomorientation of stomata. If the calyptra is removed from a sporophyteof Funaria at the time the division of the guard cell mothercells is expected, guard cells of abnormal shape and undividedguard cell mother cells are found in unusually high frequency.  相似文献

The cross-sectional area of the growing tip of a fern filamentundergoes an age-dependent decline over the period of darknessthat precedes an experimental light treatment. This dark-mediateddecline accounts for the appearance of age-dependent responsesto light treatments. Moverover, monochromatic irradiation experimentsshow that the cross-sectional areas of filaments do not manifestsignificant age-dependent variation in response to light treatmentsof sufficient energy. Because it is the cross-sectional arearather than the elongation rate that exhibits the direct responseto light in the control of filament growth, it follows thatthere is no evidence for age-dependent changes in photosensitivityof the filaments. Regression analyses establish that pre-germinationlight treatments do not affect subsequent patterns of dark growth;instead, stress calculations suggest that the tapering of thecross-sectional area may be referable to a state of stress-straindisequilibrium within the filament tip. Population density affected the sex expression of agar-growngametophytes of Onoclea sensibilis L. The time of onset of sexualitywas advanced, the proportion of females was increased, and thegrowth rate of individuals was greater at lower densities. Populationdensity had no effect on the sex expression of Onoclea grownon ashed soil, and there was no difference in growth rate ofindividuals grown on ashed soil at different densities. Covariateanalysis, using thallus width as a measure of growth rate, indicatedthat the effect of density on sex expression was mostly associatedwith growth rate. The differing effects of population densityon agar and ashed soil demonstrate that substrate influencessex expression in Onoclea. This influence is most dramatic insingle-gametophyte cultures, where agar cultures produced 97per cent females and ashed soil cultures 100 per cent males. Several polypeptides prepared by means of pyrocondensation have been the subject of structural investigations. Attention has been focused on the constitutional characterization of homo-and co-polymers containing Asp and Glu residues, whose role is essential for the formation of the so-called proteinoids. Contrary to the literature data based on chemical degradation, nmr studies show conclusively that in thermal poly-aspartic acid only beta-peptide linkages are present. This result casts serious doubt on the role thermal condensation might have played in prebiotic polypeptide syntheses.  相似文献
