Background  

One of the greatest challenges facing the early land vertebrates was the need to effectively interpret a terrestrial environment. Interpretation was based on ocular adaptations evolved for an aquatic environment millions of years earlier. The Australian lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri is thought to be the closest living relative to the first terrestrial vertebrate, and yet nothing is known about the visual pigments present in lungfish or the early tetrapods.  相似文献

Indiscriminate discharge of pharmaceutical waste into the aquatic ecosystem may pose serious health challenges to aquatic biota. The effect of acute exposure to ibuprofen was evaluated using changes in behaviour and haematological parameters under static bio-assay method in Clarias gariepinus. Test specimens were exposed to acute concentrations of ibuprofen (0.28, 0.33, 0.38, 0.43 and 0.48 mg l?1) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h durations respectively. Behavioural and phenotypic changes were observed in surviving fish. There were significant (p < 0.05) concentration and duration-dependent increases in erythrocyte (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb), pack cell volume (PCV) and leukocytes (WBC) in treated fish compared to the control. Insignificant decreases (p > 0.05) in mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were observed in treated fish compared to the control. Ibuprofen elicited dose and duration- dependent decrease in neutrophil counts with the decreases being significant (p < 0.05) in the higher doses of 0.43 and 0.48 mg l?1. Ibuprofen did not elicit any significant changes in monocytes, basophils and eosinophils. Changes observed in this study showed that ibuprofen negatively affected the health of the fish and we recommend that discharge of ibuprofen into the aquatic environment should be monitored and controlled.  相似文献

It is now known that pheromonal communication plays an important role in mammalian behaviour and reproductive processes. Chemical communication with pheromones is one means of transmitting such information. In mammals, signalling and priming pheromones are thought to act either singly or in combination through olfaction, auditory, visual (sight) or tactile stimuli. Pheromones are air-borne chemical substances ("signals") released in the urine or feces of animals or secreted from cutaneous glands that are perceived by the olfactory system and that elicit both behavioural and endocrine responses in conspecifics.Extensive studies in insects, rodents, swine, sheep, goats and cattle have established the importance of pheromones in the strong influence exerted by the male on reproductive activity in the female. There is a pheromone produced by the queen honey bee, which has two functions: inhibition of queen rearing and suppression of oogenesis in workers and in addition attracts drones during nuptial flight. It has also been demonstrated that the urine of male mice, rats, feral species and other wild rodents contains a priming pheromone that is responsible for hastening puberty in the females. Pheromones in the wool, wax and urine of a ram are sufficient to stimulate ewes to ovulate, while the buck has a strong characteristic seasonal odor and a buck jar containing the odor of the buck can be used as an aid in the detection of oestrus in does. The mere presence of the boar at the time of insemination of the sow improves sperm transport and ovulation, while the presence of the vasectomised bull has been reported to hasten the onset of puberty in heifers and also early resumption of ovarian activity in cattle following parturition. The role of pheromones in bovine reproduction is not as clearly defined as in sheep, goats and swine.Pheromones and other allelomimetic cues can exert profound effects on reproductive activity via the hypothalamic system that generates pulses of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Manipulations of these factors and other pathways linking environmental inputs to reproductive output can lead to developing the concept of "control systems technologies", aimed at controlling reproductive performance. The knowledge acquired on the effectiveness of biostimulation; the factor which conditions it and the biological mechanism which produces it in livestock species, allows its use as a breeding management tool. The understanding of the role of pheromones could be of potential economic importance in addressing some of the problems associated with livestock production in the tropics. The biostimulation technique offers a potentially useful and practical way to improve reproductive efficiency in livestock species in the tropics. The exact nature of the cues and the role of biostimulation in livestock species especially swine, sheep, goats and cattle in developing countries require more attention.  相似文献

The study was undertaken to determine the estrus response pattern of Zebu cows indigenous to Nigeria following treatment with prostaglandin F(2alpha) analogue and to determine the effect of season on the estrus parameters. Eighty cyclic Zebu cows were used in both the dry and wet seasons. Two single intramuscular injections of 25 mg of PGF(2alpha) analogue were given per cow 11 days apart regardless of the stage of the estrous cycle. The cows were then observed continuously for 168 h following each injection. The proportion of treated cows responding to PGF(2alpha) treatment in the wet season (90%) was significantly higher (P<0.005) than in the dry season (70.0%). The mean post-injection interval to onset of non-standing estrus (mucus discharge) was 30.6 h and 28.5 h in the dry and wet seasons, respectively. Similarly, the intervals to standing estrus were 69.7 h and 63.9 h in the two seasons, respectively. Seasonal effects were not significant. The duration of non-standing estrus was similar for the two seasons (164.2 h and 162.0 h) while the duration of standing estrus was significantly (P<0.01) longer in the wet season (19.2 h) than in the dry season (12.6 h). Also there was seasonal influence on the body condition score of cows, the palpability of corpora lutea (CL) and the intensity of estrus as determined by the number of mounts (17.9+/-2.0 and 51.2+/-3.4 mounts per cow per estrus period in the dry and wet seasons, respectively).  相似文献

A group of Bokoloji bulls (n=36), consisting of 18 young bulls (12 to 18 mo old) and 18 old bulls (24 to 30 mo old) were used to study the effects of feed restriction and realimentation on reproductive function. The bulls were placed either on a low (L). medium (M) or high (H) plane of nutrition during the 3 treatment periods. At the low and medium feeding levels, the animals received approximately 25 and 45%, respectively, of the intake of the bulls on the high plane diet. All the bulls were fed a low (L) plane of nutrition for 90 d in the first treatment period. The 3 treatments were designated as LL, LM and LH for the mid-period, and as LLH, LMH and LHH for the final period, according to the prescribed level of feeding. Body measurements and scrotal circumference were taken for all bulls before slaughter. A total of 18 bulls was slaughtered at the end of the mid-period, while the remaining 18 bulls were slaughtered at the end of the final period. Testicular weights as well as gonadal and epididymal sperm reserves were determined. At the end of the mid period, the bulls on a high plane of nutrition had significantly (P<0.05) higher live weights and chest girths than bulls on the medium and low planes of nutrition. Gonadal sperm/spermatid reserves of 5.2 x 10(9) and epididymal sperm reserves of 2.4 x 10(9) in bulls on the high plane of nutrition were significantly (P<0.05) higher than the sperm reserves for the bulls on either the low or the medium plane of nutrition. At the end of the final period, ho significant differences existed among the LHH, LMH and LLH treatments in liveweight, chest girth, scrotal circumference and sperm reserves (P>0.05). It is concluded that bulls which have undergone feed restriction for 90 d are capable of regaining their body growth and reproductive function if such bulls are placed on an adequate plane of nutrition.  相似文献

A concentration of 0.005% formaldehyde in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) achieved complete immobilization of ram spermatozoa while also yielding good recovery of sperm motility after removal by washing. At a higher formaldehyde concentration (0.01%) recovery rate declined with increasing dilution rate. Incubation of spermatozoa in PBS containing 0.005% formaldehyde beyond 6 h at 5, 15 or 25 degrees C resulted in poor recovery rates. Of the incubation temperatures, eosin uptake was lowest at 25 degrees C. During 4 h post-wash incubation at 30 degrees C sperm motility was significantly (P less than 0.001) affected by pre-wash formaldehyde concentration which had no effect on the proportion of eosinophilic spermatozoa.  相似文献

Sixty zebu heifers were divided into three equal groups and reared on isocaloric diets but on different levels of protein. The protein levels were 19.17% (high), 13.37% (medium; NRC recommendations) and 8.3% (low). All animals were examined weekly per rectum for the presence of follicles and corpora lutea and also checked daily for standing heat. The presence of a mature corpus luteum was considered to indicate the attainment of puberty. Body weight and pelvic dimensions were taken at biweekly intervals. Intact bulls were introduced to heifers after they reached puberty and once they reached 200 kg live weight. Pregnancy diagnosis was carried out at 60, 90 and 120 days following introduction of bulls. Mean age at puberty for heifers in the high protein group (570.4 days), medium protein group (640.8 days) and low protein group (704.2 days) differed significantly (P<0.05). body weight at puberty for heifers in the high, medium and low protein groups was 207.1, 187.0 and 161.7 kg, respectively (P<0.05). Pelvic size at puberty was not influenced by the nutritional level. Conception rates of heifers in the three groups were influenced by level of nutrition. Pregnancy rates for the high protein group (58.8%), medium protein group (27.8%), and low protein group (16.7%) by 90-day post-breeding period were significantly different (P<0.05), but body weight at conception between the groups did not differ significantly. The results show that increasing the protein level in the diet is a means of improving the reproductive performance of zebu cattle.  相似文献

Sixty-four zebu cows, comprised mainly of Bunaji cattle aged between 3 and 7 years old, were involved in an intensive artificial insemination programme. The study was conducted during the breeding period (May-October), and cows were inseminated with freshly prepared Friesian semen when they stood to be mounted by the vasectomised bull or herdmates. Fertility was measured by serum progesterone (P(4)) concentrations and pregnancy diagnosis by rectal examination post-insemination. From the records of oestrus detection and P(4) profiles of cattle following breeding, 39 oestrous cycle lengths were classified into short, normal and long cycles. The mean duration for short, normal and long oestrous cycles were 15.6+/-2.0, 21.5+/-1.5 and 29.5+/-2.5 days, respectively. Mean inter-oestrus intervals between the treatment groups were not different. The percentage frequency distribution was 48.7% for normal oestrous cycles. The short oestrous cycle lengths of 11-17 days were observed in 12.8% of the cases, while 38.5% of the cases of oestrus returns had long luteal phases with oestrous cycle lengths of 26-32 days.Out of the 64 cows, 48.4% conceived to the first breeding while 18.8% conceived to the second breeding. Five and nine cows became acyclic after the first and second breeding, respectively, constituting 22. 0%. Cows that displayed irregular oestrous cycles (repeat breeders) constituted 10.9%. Average number of services per conception was 1.3. Serum P(4) is of practical value in monitoring ovarian activity in cattle and in the identification of acyclic and repeat breeder cows. Repeat breeder cows could be investigated by a combination of radioimmunoassay and clinical examination of the ovaries and reproductive tract. In cattle management, it is economical and profitable to diagnose pregnancy early after insemination so that cows which fail to conceive may be rebred.  相似文献

Three groups of pregnant Yankasa ewes, made up of six ewes in each group were assigned at random to first, second and third trimester of pregnancy studies. The ewes were experimentally infected with T. vivax to study the effects of the infection on pregnancy and the results of Novidium Chemotherapy. Three pregnant uninfected ewes served as controls. Fourteen days post infection, the ewes in each trimester study, were paired by weight and assigned to two groups of three ewes each. One group was treated with Novidium while the other group remained untreated. Of the three ewes in each group, one ewe was killed humanely at 21 days post infection and another at the end of the trimester period. In the first trimester, a ewe with partial fetal resorption was observed among the untreated ewes. Fetal death in-utero and expulsion of an autolyzed fetus was observed among the treated ewes. In the second trimester, abortion and almost complete fetal resorption were observed among the untreated ewes. Fetal death in-utero and expulsion of an autolyzed fetus was observed among the treated ewes. In the third trimester, abortions were observed among the untreated ewes. Abortion of a live fetus and a case of dystocia were observed among the treated ewes. Ewes in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy were more susceptible to the infection, with ewes in the third trimester being most susceptible, as measured by the number of abortions and death of ewes. Fetuses from the untreated ewes in the three trimesters of pregnancy were lower in body weights, than the fetuses from the treated ewes. The uninfected control ewes carried the pregnancies to term. Novidium chemotherapy at 14 days post infection was not beneficial in ameliorating the pathogenicity of T. vivax infection on pregnancy in Yankasa ewes. T. vivax infection of only 14 days was enough to cause irreversible pathology in Yankasa fetuses evidenced by death of fetuses in-utero, dystocia and abortions irrespective of Novidium chemotherapy.  相似文献

Twenty-one Bunaji (BJ) bulls and 21 Friesian x Bunaji (FRxBJ) crossbred bulls, approximately 6 mo of age were divided after weaning into two groups and fed isocaloric rations (2.40 ME Mcal/Kg/DM) containing crude protein levels of 14.45% (high protein) and 8.51% (low protein) for a period of 16 mo to determine the effect of protein intake on puberty. Animals on high protein diets ejaculated first motile spermatozoa and attained puberty at significantly (P < 0.05) earlier ages than those on low protein diets. Mean ages at puberty in mo for BJ on low and high protein diets were 15.50 +/- 0.51 and 14.82 +/- 0.68 and for FRxBJ, the ages were 17.79 +/- 0.82 and 12.94 +/- 0.60, respectively. The animals on high protein diets at point of puberty had significantly (P < 0.05) lighter body weights, smaller scrotal circumference, lower chest girth, better body condition score and better sperm quality than those on low protein. There were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in withers height or volume of semen at puberty for the two protein diets.  相似文献
