Chromosome counts are reported in 29 populations representing 20 species and one subspecies of the genera Callicephalus (one sp.), Klasea (seven spp.), Myopordon (two spp.), Oligochaeta (one sp.), and Rhaponticum (nine spp., one ssp.). Eleven reports are new, the others supplement limited previous data. New and published cytological data are summarized and evaluated critically in light of current taxonomic treatments and evolutionary hypotheses. Basic chromosome numbers are a valuable source of taxonomic information and relate well to the phylogeny. They are quite conserved in Klasea (only x  = 15), the sister group of the remaining genera, and in the early branching genera of the Rhaponticum group ( x  = 14 for Centaurothamnus and Callicephalus ). However, a more complex pattern of genome evolution is present among the more derived clades, Oligochaeta plus Myopordon ( x  = 12, 14) and the genus Rhaponticum ( x  = 12, 13). The occurrence of x  = 12 in Oligochaeta divaricata and Rhaponticum carthamoides seems to be the result of a recent event of chromosome fusion, as suggested by the fragility of particularly long pairs of chromosomes. The use of chromomycin staining, including an enzymatic digestion step that facilitates spreading and permits a reduction of potential fragmentation, only partially resolves this problem.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 193–201.  相似文献

Few studies have assessed how the dynamics of wetland bird movements relate to changing resource availability, particularly at more than one spatial scale. Within western Oregon's Williamette Valley, we examined winter resident Dunlin Calidris alpina movements in relation to a decrease in availability of preferred shorebird foraging habitat from early to late winter of 1999–2000. By tracking movements of 15 (early winter) and 12 (late winter) radiomarked individuals, we calculated home ranges and characterized presence/absence of a preference for shorebird foraging habitat during each winter period. Between periods, we compared: (1) percentage of shorebird habitat in home ranges to its availability in the landscape (regional preference), (2) percentage of radio locations in shorebird habitat to its availability within home ranges (local preference) and (3) relative use of roost sites. Concurrent with a 75% decrease in available shorebird habitat from early to late winter, average home range sizes increased by a factor of 3.8. At a regional scale, home ranges in early winter included a significantly greater percentage of shorebird foraging habitat than was available in the wider landscape. However, by late winter, the percent of shorebird habitat in home ranges did not match availability in the landscape. At the local scale, for both winter periods Dunlin were located in shorebird foraging habitat more often than expected given availability of habitat within home ranges [Correction added after online pub-lication 23 May 2008: sentence amended]. An increase in the number of roosts used from early to late winter implies possible reliance on additional sites in late winter for foraging opportunities. Results suggest that wet, unvegetated habitat is sought by Dunlin throughout winter, but individuals could not select home ranges in late winter that fully compensated for seasonal loss of habitat.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation, i.e., the reduction of populations into small isolated remnants, is expected to increase spatial genetic structure (SGS) in plant populations through nonrandom mating, lower population densities and potential aggregation of reproductive individuals. We investigated the effects of population size reduction and genetic isolation on SGS in maritime pine ( Pinus pinaster Aiton) using a combined experimental and simulation approach. Maritime pine is a wind-pollinated conifer which has a scattered distribution in the Iberian Peninsula as a result of forest fires and habitat fragmentation. Five highly polymorphic nuclear microsatellites were genotyped in a total of 394 individuals from two population pairs from the Iberian Peninsula, formed by one continuous and one fragmented population each. In agreement with predictions, SGS was significant and stronger in fragments ( Sp  = 0.020 and Sp  = 0.026) than in continuous populations, where significant SGS was detected for one population only ( Sp  = 0.010). Simulations suggested that under fat-tailed dispersal, small population size is a stronger determinant of SGS than genetic isolation, while under normal dispersal, genetic isolation has a stronger effect. SGS was always stronger in real populations than in simulations, except if unrealistically narrow dispersal and/or high variance of reproductive success were modelled (even when accounting for potential overestimation of SGS in real populations as a result of short-distance sampling). This suggests that factors such as nonrandom mating or selection not considered in the simulations were additionally operating on SGS in Iberian maritime pine populations.  相似文献

Ascorbate free radical enhances vacuolization in onion root meristems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. Ascorbate free radical (AFR) induced cell elongation in merislems of Allium cepa roots by promoting a high vacuolization as shown by the increased vacuole volume, vacuole volume density, tonoplast surface and tonoplast surface density. Accordingly, both plasma membrane- and tonoplast-associated ATPases and vacuole soluble acid phosphatase of meristematic cells were also increased. Neither the other subcellular organelles nor cell proliferation appeared to be significantly affected. It is suggested that AFR may be involved in some plasma membrane events related to the initiation of plant cell elongation.  相似文献

Accumulating evidence shows that environmental fluctuations and exploitation jointly affect marine fish populations, and understanding their interaction is a key issue for fisheries ecology. In particular, it has been proposed that age truncation induced by fisheries exploitation may increase the population's sensitivity to climate. In this study, we use unique long‐term abundance data for the Northeast Arctic stock of cod (Gadus morhua) and the Norwegian Spring‐Spawning stock of herring (Clupea harengus), which we analyze using techniques based on age‐structured population matrices. After identifying time periods with different age distributions in the spawning stock, we use linear models to quantify the relative effect of exploitation and temperature on the population growth rates. For the two populations, age truncation was found to be associated with an increasing importance of temperature and a relatively decreasing importance of exploitation, while the population growth rate became increasingly sensitive to recruitment variations. The results suggested that the removal of older age classes reduced the buffering capacity of the population, thereby making the population growth rate more dependent on recruitment than adult survival and increasing the effect of environmental fluctuations. Age structure appeared as a key characteristic that can affect the response of fish stocks to climate variations and its consequences may be of key importance for conservation and management.  相似文献

This work comprises 24 reports of chromosome numbers in 24 Artemisia L. species from Asia. Ten are included in the subgenus Dracunculus Besser and the rest belong to other subgenera. Seven counts are new reports, 14 are consistent with scarce previous ones, and three contribute new ploidy levels. That carried out in A. medioxima reports the highest ploidy level ever counted for the genus (16 x ). There is only one species with x  = 8 as the basic chromosome number. In the remaining x  = 9-based species, ploidy levels range from 2 x to 16 x , illustrating the great role played by polyploidy in the evolution of the genus.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 301–310.  相似文献

Abstract Mediterranean representatives of the galling aphid tribe Fordini (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Eriosomatinae) are usually grouped under the subtribe term Fordina. Aphids within Fordina display two‐year life cycles, alternating between Pistacia shrubs, where they induce conspicuous galls, and roots of Poaceae species. The high number of morphs present in a given species, the lack of knowledge of the complete cycle in some species, and the similarity between homologous morphs observed in different species pose many taxonomic problems in this group. We present results of a survey to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships among Fordini species present in the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands. Sequences from the nuclear long‐wavelength opsin (LWO) and translation elongation factor 1α (EF‐1α) genes and from a region of the mitochondrial DNA containing the genes encoding the subunits six and eight of the F‐ATPase were used to infer relationships among 10 Fordina species, namely Smynthurodes betae, Aploneura lentisci, Baizongia pistaciae, two Geoica species (G. utricularia and G. setulosa), three species of Forda and two of Paracletus. Relationships between and within representatives of the genera Forda and Paracletus, both exemplifying taxonomic and ecological problems, were investigated in greater depth through extensive sampling and morphometric analysis. A total of eight, six and six samples from F. formicaria, F. marginata and F. riccobonii, respectively, were included in the survey, along with 40 and 4 samples classified initially as P. cimiciformis and P. donisthorpei, respectively. Our results are relevant to current studies on the evolution of host selection by aphids and on the evolution of gall morphology. Our phylogeny suggests that the group can be divided into two main clades. One clade is composed of aphids inducing small, low‐capacity galls on either P. atlantica or P. terebinthus (Smynthurodes betae and genera Forda and Paracletus). The second clade is composed of species inducing larger galls on P. lentiscus and P. terebinthus (Aploneura lentisci, Baizongia pistaciae and Geoica species). Our results suggest that revision of diagnostic characters used in the taxonomy of Paracletus is needed, and suggest Forda rotunda as a new synonym of Paracletus cimiciformis syn.n.  相似文献

A survey of pollen morphology and ultrastructure within the Rhaponticum group, using both scanning and transmission electron microscopy, revealed two pollen types. Most representatives of the Rhaponticum group exhibited Serratula‐type pollen. The exceptions were the genus Oligochaeta, with Centaurea jacea‐type pollen, and the genus Myopordon, with both types of pollen. Phylogenetic inference within the group indicated that Jacea‐type pollen is derived from Serratula‐type pollen. The fact that Myopordon exhibited a series of pollen types, from Serratula type to Jacea type, suggests that a transition from one form to another has occurred in the genus. Therefore, the factor which has produced this evolutionary tendency should be sought within Myopordon. Jacea‐type pollen is characterized by a decrease in size, ornamentation, the absence of a columellar infratectum and the presence of a cavea. A comparative survey of similar tendencies in other groups, and their correlation with potential functional implications, prompted the hypothesis that the critical factor involved in such evolution of pollen could be habitats with extreme conditions. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 499–510.  相似文献
