Thirteen healthy and fit men [age = 27 +/- 8 (SD) yr, height = 177 +/- 5 cm, mass = 75 +/- 7 kg, body fat = 14 +/- 5%, maximal O2 consumption = 51 +/- 4 ml. kg-1. min-1] participated in an experiment designed to test their thermoregulatory response to a challenging cold exposure after 5 h of demanding mixed exercise during which only water was consumed. Subjects expended 7,314 +/- 741 kJ on cycling, rowing, and treadmill-walking machines, performed 8,403 +/- 1,401 kg. m of mechanical work during resistance exercises, and completed 120 inclined sit-ups. Subjects then assumed a seated position in a 10 degrees C air environment while wearing shorts, T-shirt, rain hat, and neoprene gloves and boots. After 30 min the subjects were showered continuously with cold water ( approximately 920 ml/min at 10 degrees C) on their backs accompanied by a 6 km/h wind for up to 4 h. Blood samples were taken from the nondominant arm every 30 min during the exposure and assayed for energy metabolites, hormones, indexes of hydration, and neurotransmitters. Counterbalanced control trials without prior exercise were also conducted. Blood insulin was higher during the control trial, whereas values of glycerol, nonesterified fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate, lactate, cortisol, free triiodothyronine, and thyroxine were lower. Three subjects lasted the maximum duration of 4.5 h for control and fatigue trials, with final rectal temperatures of 36.43 +/- 0.21 and 36.08 +/- 0.49 degrees C, respectively. Overall, the duration of 172 +/- 68 (SD) min for the fatigue trial was not significantly different from that of the control trial (197 +/- 72 min) and, therefore, was not affected by the preexposure exercise. Although duration was positively correlated to body fatness and shivering intensity, the latter was not correlated to any physical characteristic or the fitness level of the individual.  相似文献

It was shown that at a continuously increased level of endogenous glucocorticoids (injection of ACTH) in thymectomized and B mice the degree of inhibition of CFUs migration, that was observed in T-deficient mice without ACTH injection, did not increase. With T-deficiency the stimulatory effect of the hypocorticoid state (adrenalectomy) on the CFUs migration persisted but was less pronounced than in animals with intact thymus.  相似文献

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is an evolutionarily conserved neurosecretory molecule implicated in a diverse complement of functions across taxa and in regulating feeding behavior and reproductive maturation in Octopus. However, little is known about the precise molecular circuitry of NPY-mediated behaviors and physiological processes, which likely involve a complex interaction of multiple signal molecules in specific brain regions. Here, we examined the expression of NPY throughout the Octopus central nervous system. The sequence analysis of Octopus NPY precursor confirmed the presence of both, signal peptide and putative active peptides, which are highly conserved across bilaterians. In situ hybridization revealed distinct expression of NPY in specialized compartments, including potential “integration centers,” where visual, tactile, and other behavioral circuitries converge. These centers integrating separate circuits may maintain and modulate learning and memory or other behaviors not yet attributed to NPY-dependent modulation in Octopus. Extrasomatic localization of NPY mRNA in the neurites of specific neuron populations in the brain suggests a potential demand for immediate translation at synapses and a crucial temporal role for NPY in these cell populations. We also documented the presence of NPY mRNA in a small cell population in the olfactory lobe, which is a component of the Octopus feeding and reproductive control centers. However, the molecular mapping of NPY expression only partially overlapped with that produced by immunohistochemistry in previous studies. Our study provides a precise molecular map of NPY mRNA expression that can be used to design and test future hypotheses about molecular signaling in various Octopus behaviors.  相似文献

The influence of immunization with P. aeruginosa vaccine on the immune status of volunteer donors has been studied. Immunization with P. aeruginosa vaccine in doses of 0.5-0.5-1.0 ml at intervals of 7 days has been found to lead to the 13-fold increase of the titer of specific antibodies, lasting for 3-4 months, which ensures the possibility of obtaining anti-P. aeruginosa hyperimmune plasma with standard titers. The injection of P. aeruginosa vaccine to donors leads to the activation of humoral immunity simultaneously with the increase of the absolute and relative number of rosette-forming B-lymphocytes without essential changes in the amount of rosette-forming T-lymphocytes.  相似文献

Eight men (20-23 years) weight trained 3 days.week-1 for 19 weeks. Training sessions consisted of six sets of a leg press exercise (simultaneous hip and knee extension and ankle plantar flexion) on a weight machine, the last three sets with the heaviest weight that could be used for 7-20 repetitions. In comparison to a control group (n = 6) only the trained group increased (P less than 0.01) weight lifting performance (heaviest weight lifted for one repetition, 29%), and left and right knee extensor cross-sectional area (CAT scanning and computerized planimetry, 11%, P less than 0.05). In contrast, training caused no increase in maximal voluntary isometric knee extension strength, electrically evoked knee extensor peak twitch torque, and knee extensor motor unit activation (interpolated twitch method). These data indicate that a moderate but significant amount of hypertrophy induced by weight training does not necessarily increase performance in an isometric strength task different from the training task but involving the same muscle group. The failure of evoked twitch torque to increase despite hypertrophy may further indicate that moderate hypertrophy in the early stage of strength training may not necessarily cause an increase in intrinsic muscle force generating capacity.  相似文献

An adoptive local transfer method has been used to study the immunological features and genetic restriction of cell interaction during the development of the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) to tuberculin in mice. Peritoneal cells from the BCG-infected mice transfer the DTH to intact animals (into hind footpad) in both syngeneic and allogeneic donor-recipient combinations. Nonadherent cells (macrophage-deleted) transfer the reaction in syngeneic but not allogeneic combination. The use of H-2 recombinant mouse strains demonstrated that successful transfer of the DTH requires I-A subregion compatibility. Treatment of CBA cells with anti-Thy-1.2 antiserum abrogates the reaction transfer. These results indicate that antigen presentation to immune T-cells proliferating during DTH to tuberculin is mediated through the molecular products of the I-A subregion.  相似文献

It appears that the literature and logic that the earth's gravity has been one factor in the limitation of cell size, as well as being an important influence on the diversity of cell types and sizes throughout biological evolution. Analysis of the literature reveals an inverse relationship between the centrifugal force needed for intracellular stratification and cell size. The cells studied ranged in size from approximately 1 mm (amphibian eggs, Pelomyxa) to 0.01 mm (erythrocyte, lymphocyte), and g-forces ranged from about 100 g to 100 000 g respectively. Stratification within cell nuclei and organelles requires even greater forces, presumably because of their smaller size. Extrapolation from centrifugal forces to the force of gravity, and from the full stratification to the initial sedimentation of cell parts suggests a hypothesis for the evolutionary survival and existence of cells in the field of gravity. Average cell size results, in part, from the physical equilibrium between the destructive influence of the force of gravity and the protective role of diffusion and the cytoskeleton. At increased forces of gravity the cell size would thus be decreased, whereas at lower gravitational forces and weightlessness cell size would be expected to increase. Mechanisms of protection of giant cells against internal sedimentation are based on protoplasmic motion, thin and elongated shape of the cell body, increased cytoplasmic viscosity, and a reduced range of specific gravity of cell components, relative to the ground-plasm. The nucleolus, due to its higher density, is considered as a possible trigger of mitosis.  相似文献
