The four living genera of Ctenodactylidae (Rodentia) are the only survivors of a flourishing Tertiary group. In this paper, we describe a new Oligocene species from Ulantatal (Chinese Mongolia) that highlights the origins of crown ctenodactylids. This species, Helanshania deserta gen. et sp. nov. , is lophodont and displays semi‐hypsodont teeth, a dental pattern that is somewhat transitional between that of primitive Oligocene ctenodactylids and the later hypsodont genera. We perform here a cladistic assessment of the dental evidence for species produced by the successive radiations of the group. In order to get new data, to decipher homologies for the dental pattern of modern ctenodactylids, and to specify their dental replacement, we describe additional dental material of Ctenodactylus, Massoutiera, and Felovia. The phylogenetic analysis (using PAUP) considered 45 characters (mainly dental) and 31 species. The performed heuristic searches yielded 596 equally most parsimonious trees. Protataromys and Karakoromys are stem ctenodactylids and appear as the earliest offshoots of the Ctenodactylidae clade, which represents a well‐supported family rank. Within this family, the Tataromyinae appear paraphyletic, whereas the Ctenodactylinae sensu lato are a clade including the new taxon Helanshania. As such, a revision of the Tataromyinae is envisaged and a new subfamily is erected (Yindirtemyinae). Amongst the Ctenodactylinae, a tribe Ctenodactylini encompassing the crown ctenodactylines is proposed. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 160 , 531–550.  相似文献

Worldwide ecosystems are modified by human activities and climate change. To be able to predict future changes, it is necessary to understand their respective role on population dynamics. Among the most threatened species are top predators because of their position in the food web. Albatross populations are potentially affected by both human activities, especially longline fisheries, and climatic fluctuations. Based on long‐term data (1985–2006), we conducted through a comparative approach a demographic analysis (adult survival and breeding success) on four albatross species breeding on the Indian Ocean sub‐Antarctic Islands to assess the relative impact of climate and fisheries during and outside the breeding season. The study revealed that adult survival of almost all species was not affected by climate, and therefore probably canalized against climatic variations, but was negatively affected by tuna longlining effort in three species. Breeding success was affected by climate, with contrasted effects between species, with Southern Oscillation Index having an impact on all species but one. Differences in demographic responses depended on the foraging zone and season. In order to predict population trajectories of seabirds such as albatrosses, our results show the importance of assessing the relative influence of fishing and climate impacts on demography.  相似文献

During the upsurge of the introduced predatory Nile perch in Lake Victoria in the 1980s, the zooplanktivorous Haplochromis ( Yssichromis ) pyrrhocephalus nearly vanished. The species recovered coincident with the intense fishing of Nile perch in the 1990s, when water clarity and dissolved oxygen levels had decreased dramatically due to increased eutrophication. In response to the hypoxic conditions, total gill surface in resurgent H. pyrrhocephalus increased by 64%. Remarkably, head length, eye length, and head volume decreased in size, whereas cheek depth increased. Reductions in eye size and depth of the rostral part of the musculus sternohyoideus, and reallocation of space between the opercular and suspensorial compartments of the head may have permitted accommodation of larger gills in a smaller head. By contrast, the musculus levator posterior, located dorsal to the gills, increased in depth. This probably reflects an adaptive response to the larger and tougher prey types in the diet of resurgent H. pyrrhocephalus . These striking morphological changes over a time span of only two decades could be the combined result of phenotypic plasticity and genetic change and may have fostered recovery of this species.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 41–52.  相似文献

The 'division-of-labour' hypothesis predicts that males and females perform different roles in parental care and that natural selection acts differently on each sex so as to produce different body size optima suited to their particular roles. Reversed sexual size dimorphism in avian species (females larger than males) may therefore be an adaptive consequence of different roles of males and females in parental care. We investigated patterns of nest attendance, brooding, foraging and provisioning rate in a tropical seabird, the Red-footed Booby Sula sula , a species showing a reversed sexual size dimorphism. During incubation, females attended the nest more often than males, and spent more time brooding the small chick than did males during daytime. Males and females did not differ in the average duration of their foraging trips. During incubation, there was a positive relationship between nest attendance and the duration of foraging trips in males, but not in females. During the small-chick stage, for the same time spent at the nest, males spent significantly more time than females at sea. On average, females fed the chick more often than did males. In males, there was a significant and positive relationship between the probability of feeding the chick and the duration of the foraging trip, whereas in females, this probability was much less dependent on the duration of the foraging trip. Overall, female Red-footed Boobies achieved slightly, but significantly, more parental commitment than did males. However, these sexual differences in parental participation were small, suggesting a minimal division of labour in the Red-footed Booby. Our results suggest that the division of labour hypothesis is unlikely to explain fully the adult size dimorphism in Red-footed Boobies.  相似文献

Abstract: Among the new dental remains from the late Early Eocene of Chambi (Kasserine area, Tunisia) is a large‐sized upper molar of a new bat species, Witwatia sigei nov. sp. (Chiroptera, Vespertilionoidea, Philisidae), described herein. The locality of Chambi has revealed evidence for an early appearance of two modern microchiropteran superfamilies in Africa: Dizzya exsultans, a Philisidae, which is considered to be an archaic Vespertilionoidea, and an indeterminate Rhinolophoidea. In addition to D. exsultans, the new species, W. sigei, is the second representative of the Philisidae in this locality. W. sigei extends back to the late Early Eocene the occurrence of the genus Witwatia, which was previously only reported from the early Late Eocene of the Fayum (BQ‐2, Egypt). By analogy with the largest extant microbats, the large size of Witwatia suggests a tendency to the opportunistic diet of this taxon, thereby contrasting with the strict insectivory characterizing primitive bats found in other continents in the same epoch.  相似文献

Leaf surface morphology was analysed in 32 species representing the maculate species complex (the poorly resolved section Pictae) in the genus Aloe (Xanthorrhoeaceae). Few comparative morphological data are available for the complex. Leaf surface and stomatal characters observed by scanning electron microscopy show taxonomically significant interspecific variation. Most species are characterized by irregularly outlined, four‐ to six‐sided epidermal cells, the periclinal walls of which are flat and embellished with micropapillae and the anticlinal walls of which are indicated by channels on the leaf surface. The outer stomatal pore is typically sunken or plane and surrounded by four lobes on the leaf surface that may overarch the epistomatal chamber. The guard cells have distinct outer and inner stomatal ledges. Two geographical groups, comprising southern and east African species, are distinguishable by their leaf surface morphology. These characters are diagnostic in A. ellenbeckii, A. prinslooi and A. suffulta and support changes in the delimitation of A. greatheadii, A. macrocarpa and A. swynnertonii. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 160 , 418–428.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Nitrite production by rat alveolar macrophages was studied to determine the role of L-arginine oxidation in the interaction between these cells and Pneumocystis carinii. Alveolar macrophages from rats obtained from two different breeders were used: rats from Janvier breeder had latent P. carinii infection, while those from Charles River breeder were bred in a germ-free environment. Pneumocystis carinii increased in vitro nitrite generation by unstimulated alveolar macrophages from Janvier rats only, and this was blocked by NG-monomethyl-L-arginine. Incubation of cells from Janvier and Charles River rats with lipopolysaccharide and/or interferon-gamma increased nitrite production to a similar extent. Pneumocystis carinii partially decreased nitrite release by activated alveolar macrophages, and this was still inhibited by NG-monomethyl-L-arginine. In the presence of P. carinii, superoxide dismutase used as a superoxide anion scavenger had no effect on nitrite production by activated cells. These results show that prior exposure to P. carinii leads to nitric oxide production by rat alveolar macrophages. Although the magnitude of this production seems to be moderate, it is of biological significance since cells of P. curinii-naive rats do not generate nitrite whereas those of latently infected rats do.  相似文献
