Several features of social dominance among Willow Tit Parus montanus winter flocks were examined during a four-winter study. Birds of both sexes were evenly distributed over the 33 flocks studied. In nearly half of the flocks there was an adult pair accompanied by yearlings, but one-third of the flocks consisted of more than two adults with yearlings. Males were found to be dominant over and larger than females. Within a sex, yearlings were usually subordinate to adults. The effect of size on dominance, after controlled for sex and age, remained obscure in our field data. The hierarchical status of an individual was found to rise or at least stay the same in different years, which supports the "hopeful dominants" hypothesis, i.e. birds stay in flocks hoping to achieve a higher status in the future. The ranks of mates correlated highly significantly, implying that high-ranking birds were paired with other high-ranking birds and low-ranking birds with other low-ranking birds. Birds of different age and sex did not show any differences in the proportion of initiated aggressive encounters directed at other individuals. However, males were more aggressive to other males than to females and also tended to behave less aggressively towards their own mates than towards other individuals in the flock. In tropical lowlands, peatlands are commonly reported from Southeast Asia, and especially Indonesian tropical peatlands are known as considerable C sinks and sources. In contrast, Amazonia has been clearly understudied in this context. In this study, based on field observations from 17 wetland sites in Peruvian lowland Amazonia, we report 0–5.9 m thick peat deposits from 16 sites. Only one of the studied sites did not contain any kind of peat deposit (considering pure peat and clayey peat). Historic yearly peat and C accumulation rates, based on radiocarbon dating of peat samples from five sites, varied from 0.94 ± 0.99 to 4.88 ± 1.65 mm, and from 26 ± 3 to 195 ± 70 g C m−2, respectively. The long-term apparent peat and C accumulation rates varied from 1.69 ± 0.03 to 2.56 ± 0.12 mm yr−1, and from 39 ± 10 to 85 ± 30 g C m−2 yr−1, respectively. These accumulation rates are comparable to those determined in the Indonesian tropical peatlands. Under altered conditions, Indonesian peatlands can release globally relevant amounts of C to the atmosphere. Considering the estimated total area of Amazonian peatlands (150 000 km2) close to that of the Indonesian ones (200 728 km2) as well as several factors threatening the Amazonian peatlands, we suggest that the total C stocks and fluxes associated with Amazonian peatlands may be of global significance.  相似文献

Global climate change affects ecosystems via several trophic levels. We investigated changes in the timing of breeding in the willow tit (Poecile montanus) and timing of its caterpillar food resource in relation to warming springs in a boreal forest. We used generalized linear mixed effect models to study the importance of synchrony between the timing of breeding in willow tits and the caterpillar food availability on the breeding success, measured as nestling survival rate and mean nestling weight. Both the timing of breeding and the timing of the caterpillar peak advanced during the last decades, and were well explained by spring temperatures. Unlike in most passerine populations studied, synchrony has improved with rising spring temperatures. However, it had only a modest although statistically significant positive influence on breeding success. Spring temperatures do not seem to be used as cues for the timing of caterpillar food availability by willow tits. We conclude that responses to climatic warming seem to be population, species and habitat specific, necessitating research in a wide range of taxa in different climatic zones.  相似文献

1. Acoustic scattering from fish and macroinvertebrates was studied in a boreal Finnish lake at three echosounder frequencies (38, 120 and 200 kHz). Split-beam transducers with partly overlapping 7° beams were employed. Acoustic, fish and invertebrate sampling were undertaken simultaneously. Vertical gradients of temperature and oxygen concentration were measured during the exercise.
2. At all frequencies, a narrow scattering layer coincided with the thermocline. At 38 kHz, fish were detected well with practically no reverberation from invertebrates while 200 kHz detected both fish and invertebrates.
3. Minor differences in the magnitude of acoustic scattering from fish were found between frequencies and between depth layers, but scattering at different frequencies was correlated at all depths. Acoustic scattering and fish density indices from trawl catches, consisting mostly of smelt ( Osmerus eperlanus ) (97%) and vendace ( Coregonus albula ) (3%), were significantly correlated.
4. Acoustic scattering from invertebrates increased with sound frequency. Correlation analysis suggested that the invertebrate scattering was mostly induced by Chaoborus flavicans . A low frequency is recommended for estimating fish abundance without bias from reverberation induced by invertebrate scattering. Although fish and invertebrates can also be successfully discriminated at a single frequency by thresholding and cross filtering, the combination of a low and a high frequency is a more robust tool for effective fish-invertebrate discrimination.  相似文献

We studied the effect of female behaviour on the dawn chorus of Willow Tits Parus montanus. Ten females were temporarily kept in their nest holes in order to delay their dawn emergence. Simultaneously, their mates' singing behaviour was measured. We compared the control dawn behaviour (during which the females emerged when they wanted) with that during the experimental delay. The dawn song by the males lasted longer when the females' emergences were delayed. Our results show that the duration of the dawn chorus is directly related to the female's behaviour. We suggest that at least one function of the dawn song is intrapair signalling, which is often linked to sperm competition.  相似文献

The 16-year data of a Great Tit population, breeding and overwintering in a nest box area at Oulu, northern Finland, were studied to reveal the factors governing the annual fluctuations in density and local survival. The breeding density at Taskila was high after a cold spring (March-April) and a warm August the year before was also followed by a large breeding population. A similar relationship resulted for the local survival of fledglings, and there was a tendency for immigrant yearlings to settle to breed in large numbers when the spring was cold. In the north, Great Tits cannot survive the winter in the forests but gather around feeding tables near human settlements. A cold spring evidently suppresses the birds' dispersal before the breeding season. For a population which is time-limited, it is adaptive to remain in order to breed nearby instead of searching for territories out in the forests when conditions become favourable late in the spring. Thus, the negative correlation between spring temperature and the size of the following breeding population may be the result of a spatial distribution of juveniles achieved by behavioural responses to unfavourable conditions. The causality behind the high survival of resident juveniles after a warm August may be attributable to food availability during the time when the birds undergo their postjuvenile moult, which is an energy-demanding process. The survival rate of breeding adults was highly dependent on the intensity of nightly predation upon individuals roosting in nest boxes. Stoats Mustela erminea, the prime predators, preyed on tits when the populations of their main prey species, small rodents, were low. When the effect of predation was eliminated, the density-dependent survival of adult birds disappeared. During low predation years the adult survival rate was negatively related to the number of fledglings produced per pair; this suggests that investment in descendants is a substantial survival cost for reproducing individuals.  相似文献

The major subspecies group of the great tit, Parus major , has experienced demographic and spatial expansions during the last century in several sites at the edges of its distribution range. These expansions, although temporarily very even, have resulted in dissimilar patterns of molecular diversity. Populations locating at regions of contact to other subspecies groups (in Amur, Kirghizia–Kazakhstan, and Iran) show divergence from central population by nuclear and mitochondrial markers. In Amur, gene flow from minor group could be detected based on the existence of private minor alleles in the major population. In Kirghizia and Kazakhstan, the bokharensis and major groups share almost all the microsatellite alleles detected though frequencies differ. In Iran, three geographically close populations are distinct according to the mitochondrial sequences but also indications of present or recent admixture is detected. Populations, which have expanded to regions previously unoccupied by the species (northern UK and Finland), show divergence only by one of the markers. The variability in molecular differentiation may be due to dissimilar expansions, depending on whether the colonized regions have previously been occupied by another subspecies or not, on the amount of colonizing birds, and on the amount of past and present gene flow.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 201–210.  相似文献

The Siberian Tit Parus cinctus population of Finland, and probably of the whole of Fennoscandia, has declined dramatically during this century. Understanding its population dynamics is essential for its conservation. We studied annual survival rate and dispersal distance of both breeding and fledgling Siberian Tits during 1989-97 in a moderately managed forest habitat near the southern border of its range in Kuusamo, northeastern Finland. Breeding density was low, averaging 0.51 pairs/km in a nestbox area of about 42 km2. This was probably an underestimate, because we did not search for nests in natural holes. However, following its population decline, overall densities at the southern border of the range are low. The study area was, however, suitable breeding habitat as reflected by their high nesting success. Brood size at fledging averaged 7.45 young, and reproductive output was 6.16 young per breeding pair, including failed nests. Clutch size adjustment was successful among pairs producing fledglings because, on average, 92.6% of the eggs laid produced young in successful broods. Median distance between consecutive breeding attempts was 100 m for both males and females (range 0–2500 m and 0–6000 m, respectively). Natal dispersal distance was significantly longer in females than in males. We applied Cormack-Jolly-Seber modelling to estimate survival and recapture probabilities separately. Survival of breeding birds was not sex-related, averaging 0.69 annually. Some of the ringed fledglings (3.0%) were later captured as breeders in the area. This is an underestimate of local survival rate due to incomplete recapturing of breeding birds. The implications of these results with respect to the conservation status of the species are discussed.  相似文献
