When foraging on carrion resources, the wasp Vespula germanica usually makes repeated visits to the feeding site until depleting the resource. In the present study we analyzed how environmental cues affect wasps' behavior when re‐locating a protein food source. We studied this behavior in two different natural habitats: closed and open habitats. As closed habitats have more references to orient wasps to the feeding site than open habitats, we hypothesized that they would return to the foraging site more frequently in closed habitats than in open ones. We tested this hypothesis by studying wasp behavior in three different natural habitat conditions: (i) closed habitats, (ii) open habitats, and (iii) open habitats artificially modified by adding five sticks with flagging. Experiments consisted of training individual wasps to feed from a certain array, and at the testing phase we removed food and displaced the array by 60 cm. Therefore, we recorded wasps’choices when returning to the training area, by counting both the wasps’first approaches and the number of visits to the original feeding site and the displaced array. Wasps' behavior while re‐locating a protein food source was different if foraging at open or closed habitats. Wasps more frequently revisited a previous feeding location when foraging in closed habitats than when foraging in open ones. Furthermore, wasps more frequently visited the displaced array than the original feeding site in all three treatments. Nevertheless, when wasps were trained in closed habitats, they returned to the original feeding site more frequently than if trained in open ones. Interestingly, when five sticks with flagging were added in open habitats, wasps responded similarly as in closed habitats without these references. The results show that foraging behavior in V. germanica seems to be different in closed and open habitats, probably associated with the existence of references that guide foragers when re‐locating undepleted resources.  相似文献

Several complexes of species in Sphagnum (peat mosses) originated through hybridization and allopolyploidy, suggesting that these processes have played a major evolutionary role in this genus. The Sphagnum subsecundum complex includes gametophytically haploid and diploid species in North America. Analyses of 12 microsatellite loci and sequences from two plastid DNA markers show that the evolutionary history of this group is substantially more complex than previously thought. Two taxonomic species, Sphagnum lescurii and Sphagnum inundatum, include both haploid and diploid populations. Within each ploidal level, S. lescurii and S. inundatum are not genetically differentiated. The diploid taxa show patterns of fixed heterozygosity for the microsatellite markers, consistent with an allopolyploid origin. Diploid S. lescurii is an allopolyploid between haploid S. lescurii and (haploid) S. subsecundum. Sphagnum carolinianum is an allopolyploid between haploid S. lescurii and an unknown parent. We detected homoploid hybridization between the haploids Sphagnum contortum and S. subsecundum. Finally, we report three samples of diploid Sphagnum platyphyllum (otherwise haploid) that have an allopolyploid origin involving north‐eastern haploid S. platyphyllum and an unidentified taxon. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 135–151.  相似文献

A new species of Daptonema is described based upon morphological characters and 18S rRNA sequence. Daptonema matrona sp. nov. was collected in Pina Basin (north‐eastern Brazil). It differs from all other species of the genus by the presence of reduced cephalic setae and straight spicules. These features require an adaptation of the generic diagnosis. Moreover, the females are characterized by intra‐uterine development of the offspring, considered herein as their major autapomorphic feature. Molecular systematic analyses supported Daptonema matrona sp. nov. as a distinct genetic and evolutionary lineage. A total of 44 accessions of Brachiaria decumbens were analysed for chromosome count and meiotic behaviour in order to identify potential progenitors for crosses. Among them, 15 accessions presented 2n = 18; 27 accessions, 2n = 36; and 2 accessions, 2n = 45 chromosomes. Among the diploid accessions, the rate of meiotic abnormalities was low, ranging from 0.82% to 7.93%. In the 27 tetraploid accessions, the rate of meiotic abnormalities ranged from 18.41% to 65.83%. The most common meiotic abnormalities were related to irregular chromosome segregation, but chromosome stickiness and abnormal cytokinesis were observed in low frequency. All abnormalities can compromise pollen viability by generating unbalanced gametes. Based on the chromosome number and meiotic stability, the present study indicates the apomictic tetraploid accessions that can act as male genitor to produce interspecific hybrids with B. ruziziensis or intraspecific hybrids with recently artificially tetraploidized accessions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Cell surface carbohydrates of three phytoflagellates, Phytomonas francai. Phytomonas serpens and Phytomonas sp. from different hosts including cassava, coreid insect Phthia picta and the milkweed plant Euphorbia hyssopifolia, respectively, were analysed by agglutination assays employing a battery of highly purified lectins with affinity for receptor molecules containing N-acetylglucosamine (d-GlcNAc), N-acetylgalactosamine (D-GalNAc), galactose, mannose-like (D-Man-like) residues and fucose, and by binding assay using radiolabeled [125I]-wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) and fluorescent WGA lectin, as well as glycosidases of known sugar specificity, Escherichia coli K with mannose-affinity fimbrial lectin was also used as an agglutination probe. In general, the presence of D-GlcNAc. D-GalNAc and D-Man-like residues was detected in the phytomonads' plasma membrane. These sugar moieties were confirmed in whole cell hydrolysates as assessed by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) which in addition, also showed the presence of galactose and xylose. However, marked differences in cell surface carbohydrate structures were observed. Wheat germ agglutinin, which binds to sialic acid and/or d-GlcNAc-containing residues, shows selective agglutinin activities for P. francai and Phytomonas sp., while Bandeiraea simplicifolia II agglutinin (which recognizes d-GlcNAc units) specifically bound to Phytomonas sp. Helix pomatia agglutinin which binds to D-GalNAc-containing residues reacted preferentially with Phytomonas sp. and P. serpens. Con A, which recognizes D-Man-like receptors, agglutinates all the phytomonads; however, the higher interaction was observed with Phytomonas sp. P. francai was selectively agglutinated in the presence of E. coli fimbrial lectin. Fluorescence WGA binding was significantly decreased by N-acetylglucosaminidase activities and the cell agglutination was not altered by neuraminidase treatment, suggesting the presence of an exposed D-GlcNAc moiety on the P. francai and Phytomonas sp. surfaces. Binding studies with [125I]-WGA essentially confirmed the fluorescence WGA binding and agglutination assays.  相似文献

To evaluate the presence of androgen receptors in the human melanoma cell line IIBMEL-J, a Scatchard plot analysis was performed. Cells in culture revealed a single binding component with an apparent dissociation constant (KD) at 37°C of 11 nM and a binding capacity of 326 fmol/mg protein when measured with [3H]-R1881. Competition analysis revealed an atypical relaxation of specificity, since not only androgen (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone [DHT], R1881) and antiandrogen (hydroxy-flutamide [OH-FLU]) competed for [3H]-R1881 binding, but also estradiol, progesterone, and cortisol at 500-fold excess concentration. Binding of [3H]-estradiol and [3H]-R5020 in the absence of unlabeled DHT were completely suppressed in its presence. Immunohistochemistry of androgen receptor with a monoclonal antibody showed that nuclei were vigorously stained. Different doses of flutamide (FLU) and OH-FLU tested on cultured IIB-MEL-J cells in the presence of serum inhibited significantly cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. When cells were incubated with 10 nM DHT and 1%charcoal-adsorbed serum, a significant stimulation of growth that was observed was inhibited by 4 μM OH-FLU. DHT stimulation was completely reversed by the antiestrogen tamoxifen. In addition, male nude mice transplanted with IIB-MEL-J tumor were treated with FLU when tumors were palpable. FLU was effective in diminishing tumor growth and increasing survival rate of the animals. As a conclusion, the presence of functional androgen receptors in these cells has been demonstrated by growth inhibition in vitro and in vivo with antiandrogens, and their atypical nature is suggested by binding cross-reactivity and competition studies.  相似文献

The temperate South American lizard genus Liolaemus is the one of the most widely distributed and species‐rich genera of lizards on earth. The genus is divided into two subgenera, Liolaemus sensu stricto (the ‘Chilean group’) and Eulaemus (the ‘Argentino group’), a division that is supported by recent molecular and morphological data. Owing to a lack of reliable fossil data, previous studies have been forced to use either global molecular clocks, a standardized mutation rate adopted from previous studies, or the use of geological events as calibration points. However, simulations indicate that these types of assumptions may result in less accurate estimates of divergence times when clock‐like models or mutation rates are violated. We used a multilocus data set combined with a newly described fossil to provide the first calibrated phylogeny for the crown groups of the clade Eulaemus, and derive new fossil‐calibrated substitution rates (with error) of both nuclear and mtDNA gene regions for Eulaemus specifically. Divergence date estimates for each of the crown groups and appropriate rate estimates will provide the foundation for understanding rates of speciation, historical biogeography, and phylogeographical history for various clades in one of the most diverse lizard genera in the poorly studied Patagonian region. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 164 , 825–835.  相似文献

Shallow lakes, the most abundant lake type in the world, are very sensitive to climatic changes. The structure and functioning of shallow lakes are greatly impacted by submerged plants, and these may be affected by climate warming in various, contrasting, ways. Following a space‐for‐time substitution approach, we aimed to analyse the role of aquatic (submerged and free‐floating) plants in shallow lakes under warm climates. We introduced artificial submerged and free‐floating plant beds in five comparable lakes located in the temperate zone (Denmark, 55–57 °N) and in the subtropical zone (Uruguay, 30–35 °S), with the aim to study the structure and dynamics of the main associated communities. Regardless of differences in environmental variables, such as area, water transparency and nutrient status, we found consistent patterns in littoral community dynamics and structure (i.e. densities and composition of fish, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, and periphyton) within, but substantial differences between, the two regions. Subtropical fish communities within the macrophyte beds exhibited higher diversity, higher density, smaller size, lower relative abundance of potentially piscivores, and a preference for submerged plants, compared with otherwise similar temperate lakes. By contrast, macroinvertebrates and cladocerans had higher taxon richness and densities, and periphyton higher biomass, in the temperate lakes. Several indicators suggest that the fish predation pressure was much stronger among the plants in the subtropical lakes. The antipredator behaviour of cladocerans also differed significantly between climate zones. Submerged and free‐floating plants exerted different effects on the spatial distribution of the main communities, the effects differing between the climate zones. In the temperate lakes, submerged plants promoted trophic interactions with potentially positive cascading effects on water transparency, in contrast to the free‐floating plants, and in strong contrast to the findings in the subtropical lakes. The higher impact of fish may result in higher sensitivity of warm lakes to external changes (e.g. increase in nutrient loading or water level changes). The current process of warming, particularly in temperate lakes, may entail an increased sensitivity to eutrophication, and a threat to the high diversity, clear water state.  相似文献

1. Variation in plant phenology allows plants to escape from herbivory. Insect herbivores manipulate their host plants by producing shelters, which they inhabit, and are protected against natural enemies and/or unfavourable environmental conditions. Environmental modifications induced by living organisms are characterised as ecosystem engineering. 2. In the Brazilian savanna, the interaction between the Malpighiaceae shrub, Byrsonima intermedia, and its main herbivore, the caterpillar Cerconota achatina, a shelter‐building organism, was studied. 3. It was focused on whether the phenological development of the host plant affects the caterpillars' infestation, and whether C. achatina acts as an ecosystem engineer by building shelters. All plant variables (number of leaves, flowers, buds, fruits and herbivores) were measured fortnightly. Phenological data were correlated with climatic information. The impact of the caterpillars acting as ecosystem engineers was measured experimentally. 4. Infestation levels of C. achatina covaried with the phenology of their host plant B. intermedia. It suggests that plant phenology might be an important factor in determining the abundances of this ecosystem engineer species.  相似文献
