Effect of Four Sowing Date Environments on Growth, Development and Yield Potentials of 15 Pearl Millet Cultivars (Pennisetum americanum L Leeke) During Autumn-Winter Seasons in Marin, N.L., Mexico

A study has been undertaken on the growth, development, andyield potentials of 15 pearl millet cultivars showing a largegenetic variability in growth parameters in different sowingenvironments Sowing date had a significant effect on growthstages (GS1, GS2, GS3), thermal units accumulated in respectivegrowth stages, days to flowering, and yield components of thepearl millet cultivars Significant genotype x sowing date interactionswere also observed for the majority of the variables mentioned. A decline in both temperature and length of photopenod oversuccessive sowing dates from July to September had a drasticeffect on phenology and yield potentials of the pearl milletcultivars. Higher grain yield in the July sowing experiment, compared tothose for other sowing dates, could be related to a longer photopenod(> 13 h), higher temperatures, and a significant differencebetween day and night temperatures. A Comparative Study of the Haustorial Development of Striga asiatica (L.) Kuntze on Sorghum Cultivars

Ten sorghum cultivars were studied for their mode of Strigaparasitization, and the factors conferring resistance in resistantcultivars most of the Striga haustona failed to penetrate beyondthe endodermis, whereas in susceptible cultivars the haustonapenetrated the endodermis and became established Resistant cultivars showed marked endodermal and pencyclic thickeningand the deposition of silica in their endodermal cells, whichwere lacking in the susceptible cultivars Extra thickening inpencyclic cells as a response to the entrance of haustonum wasobserved in cultivars N-13 and IS-4202 Ten cultivars studied showed differential haustorial reactionsThese reactions included extra thickening in the pericycle inresponse to haustonal infestation, haustonal collapse, tylosts-likeocclusions in the xylem vessels, and the deposition of dark-stainingmaterials in the cortex Although no definite conclusion couldbe drawn regarding the relationship between the degree of mechanicaltissue development and field resistance, there was evidencethat some field-resistant cultivars have strong mechanical tissuesThere could, however, be other factors governing resistanceto Striga in the field Striga asiatica, sorghum, haustorium, anatomy, endodermis, pot test, host resistance mechanism, parasitization, susceptibility     

Estrous cycle of the bandicoot rat-a rodent pest

Estrous cycle was studied in a rodent pest from behavioural and physiological standpoints. The bandicoot rat showed four stages of the cycle. The duration of proestrus was significantly lower, and that of estrus and metestrus were higher in this species. Total length of the cycle was also higher. Variation in the duration of stages or cycle observed in the bandicoot rat is suggested to be species specific.
