Vision-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Inactive HLA-B27–Associated-Spectrum Anterior Uveitis

We investigated the vision-related quality of life (VR-QOL) in patients with HLA-B27 associated anterior uveitis (AU). The study was conducted in 2012 at the ophthalmology department of the University Medical Center of Groningen. We included AU patients who were HLA-B27 positive and/or were diagnosed by a rheumatologist with an HLA-B27 associated systemic disease. Sixty-one of 123 (50%) adult patients participated. All patients filled-out the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI VFQ-25), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), social support lists and an additional questionnaire for gathering general information. Medical records were reviewed for clinical characteristics. Analyses were conducted on various patient and ocular characteristics. We compared our NEI VFQ-25 scores with those previously found in the literature. Our main outcome measures were VR-QOL scores and their associations with various general patient and ocular characteristics. We found that the NEI VFQ-25 mean overall composite score was 88.9±8.8, which is relatively high, but lower than that found in a normal working population. The mean general health score was 47.4±20.8, which is lower than in patients with other ocular diseases. Patients with a systemic disease scored significantly lower on general health and VR-QOL, compared to patients without a systemic disease. Patients with a depression (6/59 (10%)) frequently had ankylosing spondylitis (5/6 patients) and they scored significantly worse on VR-QOL. We concluded that patients with HLA-B27 associated AU have a relatively high VR-QOL. However, the presence of a systemic disease is associated with lower VR-QOL and general health scores. In addition, depression is associated with a lower VR-QOL.     

Some meteorological conditions associated with forest fires in Galicia (Spain)

The present paper offers data on the effect of certain meteorological parameters on the outbreak of forest fires in Galicia (Spain). In a day-to-day analysis, the values of the stability of the air column and the saturation deficit at the lower levels are related to the number of fires occurring in the following 24 h.     

Potential long-acting contraceptive agents: esters of testosterone with alkoxy- and halogeno-substituted carboxylic acids

The chemical synthesis and physical data of several new esters of testosterone (17 beta-hydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one), which contain either a halogeno or an alkoxy substituent in the acid chain, are reported.     

Autonomous replication sequences in an extrachromosomal element of a pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica.

Entamoeba histolytica possesses a 24.5 kilobase plasmid-like molecule which encodes for the organism's ribosomal RNAs. Sequence analysis of this extrachromosomal element revealed the presence of AT rich sequences which show homology to the origin of replication of other lower eucaryotes. An 802 bp fragment containing these sequences was cloned into a yeast shuttle vector lacking the origin of replication and the construct tested for its ability to replicate autonomously in yeast. Mitotic stability tests as well as evidence for plasmid maintenance indicate that the transformed cells contained self-replicating episomes and not stably integrated molecules. The nucleotide sequence of this ARS-containing fragment is presented.     

Chagas disease in Mexico

Mexico - the northernmost country of Latin America - has long been thought to have an unusually low prevalence of Chagas disease compared with other Latin American countries. This has seemed unusual because of the large number of vector species and subspecies reported from the country, and the social and ecological conditions that seem to parallel those in other countries where Chagas disease is recognized as a major public health priority. This review seeks to clarify the question, and suggests that the epidemiological, parasitological, and entomological pattern of Chagas disease in Mexico may also parallel that of other endemic regions, but has been masked by poor awareness of the disease both at local and institutional levels.     

Amphetamine and chlorpromazine modify cerebral insulin levels in rats

Rats treated with chlorpromazine (CPZ) (1 mg/kg/day i.p.) experienced a marked decline in cerebral insulin levels (0.057 +/- 0.01 ng/g wet weight) with respect to a control group (0.38 +/- 0.05 ng/g wet weight), while rats given D-amphetamine bitartrate (AMPH) chronically (20 mg/kg/day p.o.) showed a rise in cerebral insulin (0.55 +/- 0.04 ng/g wet weight). Combined treatment with both drugs at the same dosages produced lower cerebral insulin levels (0.46 +/- 0.10 ng/g wet weight) than in the AMPH animals. In the groups of rats treated with CPZ and with AMPH + CPZ, there was a slight elevation in serum insulin levels. Serum glucose values did not vary.     

Semisynthetic preparation of N-glycolylneuraminic acid containing GM1 ganglioside: chemical characterization, physico-chemical properties and some biochemical features

N-Glycolylneuraminic acid containing GM1, GM1(NeuGc), was prepared by semisynthetic procedure. The procedure makes use of GM1 ganglioside deacetylated at the level of sialic acid residue (deAc-GM1) and of 1,3-dioxalan-2,4-dione. DeAc-GM1 is prepared from GM1 by alkaline hydrolysis in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide and the glycolylating compound by reaction of glycolic acid with phosgene in dioxane, followed by cyclization under vacuum. Mass spectrometric and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analyses clearly indicated the presence, in the neosynthesized ganglioside of a glycolic group in the sialic acid residue. Laser-light scattering measurements show that GM1(NeuGc) aggregates in aqueous media being present in solution as micelles with a molecular weight of 576,000 and a hydrodynamic radius of 62.4 A as determined at 25 degrees C. GM1(NeuGc) promotes neurite outgrowth in N-2a cells to a similar degree as GM1(NeuAc), but shows different behaviour under treatment with sialidase from Arthrobacter ureafaciens.     

19q distal trisomy due to a de novo (19;22)(q13.2;p11) translocation

A 2 4/12-year-old girl whith a de novo 46,XX,-22 + der(22), t(19;22)(q13.2;p11) karyotype is described. From this and other eight similar cases previously published, a typical phenotype in distal 19q trisomy is concluded.     

Egg and cows' milk hypersensitivity in exclusively breast fed infants with eczema,and detection of egg protein in breast milk.

Forty nine eczematous infants who were still solely and exclusively breast fed and who had never received anything but breast milk were studied for evidence of sensitisation to foods. Thirty four similar infants without eczema formed a control group. The eczematous infants were divided into three groups according to clinical criteria: (1) definite atopic eczema; (2) possible atopic eczema; (3) atopic eczema unlikely. Twenty three infants showed cutaneous hypersensitivity to foods, usually egg and cows'' milk. Seven of 14 infants in group 1 and nine of 20 in group 2 were sensitised compared with four of 15 in group 3 and three of 34 controls (p less than 0.01). Ovalbumin was detected in breast milk from 14 of 19 mothers tested after ingestion of egg, the concentrations being the same for mothers feeding eczematous and normal infants. Breast fed babies developing eczema may be sensitised by foods eaten by their mothers.
