Investigations of the lymphogenic metastatic spread of VX2 carcinomas in New Zealand White rabbits require an exact knowledge of the topography of cervical and facial lymph nodes. The topography of neck lymph nodes was evaluated from 16 rabbits macroscopically, histologically and by lymphographic investigations, and the possibility of their surgical removal (neck dissection) was examined. The upper aerodigestive tract and the ear of New Zealand White rabbits drain via four consistent groups of 12-18 lymph nodes. Except for the paratracheal lymph node, they are all easily accessible to surgery. The data presented in this study encourage the use of induced VX2 carcinomas in New Zealand White rabbits as an animal model to study the lymphogenic metastatic spread of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. Such investigations could lead to an improvement of surgical and pharmaceutical treatment of this tumour entity. 相似文献

The diet of ringed seals (Pusa hispida) from coastal and offshore areas of Northeast Greenland was determined by identifying, to the lowest taxonomic limit possible,
all hard-part contents from the gastrointestinal tract of 51 seals sampled (2002–2004) in spring (April to June, N = 35) and autumn (September to October, N = 16). The autumn diet was characterized by high numbers of Parathemisto libellula, and the spring diet was comprised primarily of polar cod (Boreogadus saida), with few invertebrates consumed. The coastal seal diet samples had a diverse fish prey composition (during both the spring
and autumn), whereas the open water seals had eaten mostly crustaceans with P. libellula being most abundant. The sample sizes from the various locations and seasons were not large enough to explore age-class effects
on diet in addition. Similar to earlier studies, this study suggests that the ringed seal is a generalist that exploits prey
based on availability, with a few key species dominating the diet in an area at least on a seasonal basis. 相似文献

Food consumption of Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus L.) was quantified by combining underwater observations of feeding with satellite-telemetry data on movement and diving activity. The study was conducted between 31 July and 7 August 2001 in Young Sound (74°N-20°W) in Northeast Greenland. On ten occasions, divers were able to accompany foraging walruses to the sea floor and collect the shells of newly predated bivalves (Mya truncata, Hiatella arctica, Serripes groenlandicus) for determination of number of prey and biomass ingested per dive. Simultaneously, the activity of a 1,200-kg adult male walrus was studied by use of satellite-telemetry during an entire foraging cycle that included 74 h at sea followed by a 23-h rest on land. An average of 53.2 bivalves (SE=5.2, range: 34-89, n=10) were consumed per dive, corresponding to 149.0 g shell-free dry matter (SE=18.9, range: 62.4-253.1 g), or 2,576 kJ per dive (SE=325.2, range: 1,072-4,377 kJ). During the foraging trip, the walrus spent 57% of the time diving to depths of between 6 and 32 m, and it made a total of 412 dives that lasted between 5 and 7 min (i.e. typical foraging dives). If the entire feeding cycle is considered (97 h), the estimated daily gross energy intake was 214 kJ per kg body mass (95% CI: 153-275 kJ), corresponding to the ingestion of 57 kg (95% CI: 41-72 kg) wet weight bivalve biomass per day, or 4.7 (95% CI: 3.3-5.9%) of total walrus body mass. Due to ice cover, walrus access to the plentiful inshore bivalve banks in the area is restricted to the short summer period, where walruses rely on them for replenishing energy stores. It is hypothesised that the documented decrease in the extent and duration of Arctic sea ice may increase food availability for walruses in eastern Greenland in the future. 相似文献

Programmed cell death‐ligand 1 (PD‐L1) is an important predictive biomarker. The detection of PD‐L1 can be crucial for patients with advanced cancer where the use of immunotherapy is considered. Here, we demonstrate the use of immuno‐SERS microscopy (iSERS) for localizing PD‐L1 on single cancer SkBr‐3 cells. A central advantage of iSERS is that the disturbing autofluorescence from cells and tissues can be efficiently minimized by red to near‐infrared laser excitation. In this study we employed Au/Au core/satellite nanoparticles as SERS nanotags because of their remarkable signal brightness and colloidal stability upon red laser excitation. False‐color iSERS images of the positive and negative controls clearly reveal the specific localization of PD‐L1 with SERS nanotag‐labeled antibodies. 相似文献

iSERS (SERS=surface‐enhanced Raman scattering) microscopy is an emerging Raman‐based staining technique for the selective localization of target proteins on cells and tissues using antibody‐ SERS nanotag conjugates. In this contribution we demonstrate the feasibility of iSERS for imaging of programmed cell death‐ligand 1 (PD‐L1), an important predictive biomarker, on single SkBr‐3 breast cancer cells.
