A re-examination of the trilobite Baniaspis globosa Destombes (Phacopina) from the Ashgill of the Anti-Atlas (Morocco) shows that it has several derived characters which allow us to classify it in the family Calmoniidae. Calmoniids were characteristic members of the Malvino-Kaffric province during the Lower Devonian. Hence we regard the origins of this palaeogeographic province as located on the northern Gondwanan margin as early as Ashgill, or even Caradoc, times. We agree with those authors who have suggested that the trilobite associations present in the Anti-Atlas, the Montagne Noire (France) and Bohemia during the earlier Ordovician argue against the existence of a 'proto-Tethys' ocean.  相似文献

During the Llandeilo, the sandy lithological units which develop locally in the Armorican Massif, Spain and Morocco, are all characterized by similar trilobite associations in which endobenthic homalonotids. well adapted to shallow water and sandy substrate, are predominant. During the Llandeilo, on the northern Gondwanan margin, the wide geographical distribution of most of the trilobites, controlled by environmental factors, shows that the existence of a 'Proto-Tethys' ocean is unlikely. □ North Gondwana, Trilobita, Homalonotidae, Ordovician, Llandeilo. palaeoenvironment.  相似文献

Offshore fluxes of Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Hg were calculated based onresidual flow patterns and salinity gradients along the Belgian coast. Theresidual flow lines along the Belgian coast are more or less parallel to thecoast except in the area where the north-easterly flowing watermass comingfrom the Channel encounters the south-westerly-oriented Scheldt outflow,forming a residual hydrodynamical front. From the steady-state salinitypattern, diffusion coefficients perpendicular to the residual flow werededuced; they ranged from 21 to 108 m2 s-1. Offshore fluxes of dissolved and particulate trace metals based on diffusiveand mixing processes are calculated. The steady state profiles of dissolvedmetals show a dilution effect in the coastal waters, reaching an almostconstant concentration in the marine watermass in the 1981–1983dataset. The ratios of the Scheldt input of trace metals to the totaldissolved offshore flux vary from 38 to 55% (1981–1983),depending on the kind of metal, and from 55 to 91% (1995–1996).The ratio of the Scheldt input to the dissolved metal flow parallel to thecoast, is in both periods (1981–1983 and 1995–1996), smallerthan 1%. The steady-state concentration profiles of particular metalsversus salinity are fairly constant in the coastal-estuarine and marinewatermasses, but decrease very abruptly from the first to the secondwatermass. Assuming a conservative behaviour of the particular metals,offshore fluxes and the resulting concentration increases agree fairly wellwith the observed values. The ratios of the Scheldt input to the particulatetrace metal offshore flux vary between 30 to 46% (1981–1983)and 13 to 37% (1995–1996). The contribution of the Scheldtestuary to the flows parallel to the coast ranges from 1.6 to 2.9%(1981–1983) and from 0.6 to 1.6% (1995). Making use of a numerical self-consistent field method and polymer brush concepts, we model the solvated corona of neurofilaments (NF) composed of projection domains (unstructured tails) of constituent proteins. Projections are modeled with amino acid resolution. We focus on the importance of the two shortest ones (α-internexin and NF-L) in regulating the conformations of the two longer ones (NF-M and NF-H) in an isolated NF. We take the wild-type NF with no α-internexin as the reference, for which the phosphorylation-induced translocation of M- and H-tails has been examined previously. We demonstrate that a subbrush of L-tails creates an electrostatic potential profile with an approximately parabolic shape. An experimentally relevant (2:1) ratio of L- to α-projections reduces the charge density of the L subbrush and shifts the translocation transition of the H-tails to slightly higher degrees of phosphorylation. Replacing all L-tails by α-projections destroys the substructure of the NF corona and this alters the NF response to the phosphorylation of long tails.  相似文献

Properties of hydrated unsaturated phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipid bilayers containing 40 mol % cholesterol and of pure PC bilayers have been studied. Various methods were applied, including molecular dynamics simulations, self-consistent field calculations, and the pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance technique. Lipid bilayers were composed of 18:0/18:1(n-9)cis PC, 18:0/18:2(n-6)cis PC, 18:0/18:3(n-3)cis PC, 18:0/20:4(n-6)cis PC, and 18:0/22:6(n-3)cis PC molecules. Lateral self-diffusion coefficients of the lipids in all these bilayers, mass density distributions of atoms and atom groups with respect to the bilayer normal, the C-H and C-C bond order parameter profiles of each phospholipid hydrocarbon chain with respect to the bilayer normal were calculated. It was shown that the lateral self-diffusion coefficient of PC molecules of the lipid bilayer containing 40 mol % cholesterol is smaller than that for a corresponding pure PC bilayer; the diffusion coefficients increase with increasing the degree of unsaturation of one of the PC chains in bilayers of both types (i.e., in pure bilayers or in bilayers with cholesterol). The presence of cholesterol in a bilayer promoted the extension of saturated and polyunsaturated lipid chains. The condensing effect of cholesterol on the order parameters was more pronounced for the double C=C bonds of polyunsaturated chains than for single C-C bonds of saturated chains.  相似文献

We surveyed nine diallelic polymorphic sites on the Y chromosomes of 1,544 individuals from Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the New World. Phylogenetic analyses of these nine sites resulted in a tree for 10 distinct Y haplotypes with a coalescence time of approximately 150,000 years. The 10 haplotypes were unevenly distributed among human populations: 5 were restricted to a particular continent, 2 were shared between Africa and Europe, 1 was present only in the Old World, and 2 were found in all geographic regions surveyed. The ancestral haplotype was limited to African populations. Random permutation procedures revealed statistically significant patterns of geographical structuring of this paternal genetic variation. The results of a nested cladistic analysis indicated that these geographical associations arose through a combination of processes, including restricted, recurrent gene flow (isolation by distance) and range expansions. We inferred that one of the oldest events in the nested cladistic analysis was a range expansion out of Africa which resulted in the complete replacement of Y chromosomes throughout the Old World, a finding consistent with many versions of the Out of Africa Replacement Model. A second and more recent range expansion brought Asian Y chromosomes back to Africa without replacing the indigenous African male gene pool. Thus, the previously observed high levels of Y chromosomal genetic diversity in Africa may be due in part to bidirectional population movements. Finally, a comparison of our results with those from nested cladistic analyses of human mtDNA and beta-globin data revealed different patterns of inferences for males and females concerning the relative roles of population history (range expansions) and population structure (recurrent gene flow), thereby adding a new sex-specific component to models of human evolution.   相似文献

Cooperative behavior is widely spread in microbial populations. An example is the expression of an extracellular protease by the lactic acid bacterium Lactococcus lactis, which degrades milk proteins into free utilizable peptides that are essential to allow growth to high cell densities in milk. Cheating, protease-negative strains can invade the population and drive the protease-positive strain to extinction. By using multiple experimental approaches, as well as modeling population dynamics, we demonstrate that the persistence of the proteolytic trait is determined by the fraction of the generated peptides that can be captured by the cell before diffusing away from it. The mechanism described is likely to be relevant for the evolutionary stability of many extracellular substrate-degrading enzymes.  相似文献

The swelling behavior of charged phospholipids in pure water is completely different from that of neutral or isoelectric phospholipids. It was therefore suggested in the past that, instead of multilamellar phases, vesicles represent the stable structures of charged lipids in excess water. In this article, we show that this might indeed be the case for dioleoylphosphatidylglycerol and even for dioleoylphosphatidylcholine in certain salts. The size of the vesicles formed by these lipids depends on the phospholipid concentration in a way that has been predicted in the literature for vesicles of which the curvature energy is compensated for by translational entropy and a renormalization of the bending moduli (entropic stabilization). Self-consistent field calculations on charged bilayers show that the mean bending modulus kc and the Gaussian bending modulus k have opposite sign and /k/>kc, especially at low ionic strength. This has the implication that the energy needed to curve the bilayer into a closed vesicle Eves=4pi(2kc+k) is much less than one would expect based on the value of kc alone. As a result, Eves can relatively easily be entropically compensated. The radii of vesicles that are stabilized by entropy are expected to depend on the membrane persistence length and thus on kc. Experiments in which the vesicle size is studied as a function of the salt and the salt concentration correlate well with self-consistent field predictions of kc as a function of ionic strength.  相似文献

我们从细胞形态上的研究, 证明:蓖麻蚕卵在成熟期分裂的中期(同一横剖面), 基组数染色体是14;分作两圈, 内层4个, 外层10个。成熟卵停止在第一次中期分裂, 纺锤体与卵膜垂直, 待精子入卵后继续向前分裂, 并发现有染色质消散的现象。第二次成熟期分裂结果获得3个极体和1个雌性原核。正常的卵平均能接受2-3条精子, 它们入卵后起收缩、囊化成雄性原核;其中一个与雌性原核合并为“双组核”。剩余的过数精核分裂缓慢, 终于中心体离纺锤体作异形的分裂。  相似文献

Introduction

Biological drugs are effective in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but increase severe infections. The CC chemokine receptor (CCR) 9 antagonist was effective for Crohn’s disease without critical adverse effects including infections in clinical trials. The present study was carried out to explore the pathogenic roles of chemokine (C-C motif) ligand (CCL) 25 and its receptor, CCR9, in autoimmune arthritis and to study if the CCR9 antagonist could be a new treatment for RA.

Methods

CCL25 and CCR9 expression was examined with immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. Concentration of interleukin (IL)-6, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α was measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Effects of abrogating CCR9 on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was evaluated using CCR9-deficient mice or the CCR9 antagonist, CCX8037. Fluorescence labeled-CD11b+ splenocytes from CIA mice were transferred to recipient CIA mice and those infiltrating into the synovial tissues of the recipient mice were counted.

Results

CCL25 and CCR9 proteins were found in the RA synovial tissues. CCR9 was expressed on macrophages, fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) and dendritic cells in the synovial tissues. Stimulation with CCL25 increased IL-6 and MMP-3 production from RA FLS, and IL-6 and TNF-α production from peripheral blood monocytes. CIA was suppressed in CCR9-deficient mice. CCX8037 also inhibited CIA and the migration of transferred CD11b+ splenocytes into the synovial tissues.

Conclusions

The interaction between CCL25 and CCR9 may play important roles in cell infiltration into the RA synovial tissues and inflammatory mediator production. Blocking CCL25 or CCR9 may represent a novel safe therapy for RA.  相似文献
