Abstract: The decline of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) has been attributed to anthropogenic landscape disturbances, but critical distance thresholds and time lags between disturbance and extirpation are unknown. Using a database of caribou presence and extirpation for northern Ontario, Canada, geo-coded to 10 times 10-km cells, we constructed logistic regression models to predict caribou extirpation based on distance to the nearest of each of 9 disturbance types: forest cutovers, fires, roads, utility corridors, mines, pits and quarries, lakes, trails, and rail lines. We used Akaike's Information Criterion to select parsimonious models and Receiver-Operating Characteristic curves to derive optimal thresholds. To deal with the effects of spatial autocorrelation on estimates of model significance, we used subsampling and restricted randomizations. Forest cutovers were the best predictor of caribou occupancy, with a tolerance threshold of 13 km to nearest cutover and a time lag of 2 decades between disturbance by cutting and caribou extirpation. Management of woodland caribou should incorporate buffers around habitat and requires long-term monitoring of range occupancy.  相似文献

Patterns of variation at nine enzyme loci were examined in 528 plants representing diploid and tetraploid populations of Parnassia palustris s. l. in Europe to assess genetic variation patterns and migration history. Half of the plants showed a unique multilocus phenotype and 75% of all phenotypes occurred only in Scandinavia. Diploid populations showed similar levels of genetic diversity as other widespread outbreeding species with animal-mediated pollination and F -statistics indicated excessive heterozygosity and low rates of gene flow among them. In spite of dramatic population histories caused by the ice ages, diploid populations have maintained the same genetic diversity in Scandinavia as in central and southern Europe. Northern populations have apparently been established through the gradual advance of genetically variable populations and patterns of variation at individual loci indicate different migration routes, from the south-south-west and the east-north-east, respectively. The data strongly support a repeated autoploid origin of the tetraploid cytotype which has been much more successful than the diploid progenitors in colonizing new land since the last ice age. High genetic diversity in Scandinavia has apparently been obtained by a combination of immigration of plants from different source areas and recurrent formation of autotetraploids from diploid progenitors.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 142 , 347−372.  相似文献

Two diploid species of hybrid origin, Argyranthemum lemsii and A. sundingii , have been described from different valleys in the Anaga peninsula, north-east Tenerife. They have previously been shown to originate from hybridization between the same parental species, the montane A. broussonetii and the coastal A. frutescens , A. broussonetii being the chloroplast donor in one valley and A. frutescens in the other. The specific status of the two hybrid species has been questioned. In this study we used karyotype analysis, FISH, and GISH to address the question of multiple diploid hybrid speciation. GISH did not discriminate clearly between the parental genomes, but differential labelling was observed in separate hybrid populations, indicating different chromosomal rearrangements in different valleys. Small karyotype differences and local loss of rDNA were also observed. Thus separate origins of the same hybrid combination in different valleys in Tenerife have been verified. In an experimental trial lasting approximately 6 months, 10 different vaccination regimes against furunculosis were studied in Atlantic salmon pre-smolts. Single and repeated administration of vaccine by the intraperitoneal (i.p.), immersion or oral route, and revaccination by combinations of these methods, were tested. In challenge assays initiated 8 and 16 weeks after vaccination, fish injected once with a trivalent vaccine, and fish injected twice with a monovalent vaccine, both containing aluminium phosphate as adjuvant, were moderately protected. Non-injection vaccination protocols consistently failed to protect the fish. Compared with unvaccinated fish, protected groups showed elevated antibody responses toAeromonas salmonicidaantigens throughout the study. Increasedin vitroproliferation of head kidney leucocytes from i.p. vaccinated fish was found 16 weeks after vaccination. The use of a polyvalent vaccine preparation, and revaccination by injection or the oral route improved both immune responses and survival, compared to a single inoculation of monovalent vaccine. In all groups subjected to i.p. administration of vaccine, minor to moderate intraperitoneal lesions were found. In conclusion, i.p. administration of adjuvanted vaccine, preferably in a polyvalent formulation, is the optimal method of inducing anti-furunculosis immunity in Atlantic salmon, and is apparently necessary for an effective immunoprophylaxis of salmonid fish against furunculosis.  相似文献

Examples of recurrent homoploid hybrid speciation are few. One often‐cited example is Argyranthemum sundingii. This example includes two described species, A. lemsii and A. sundingii, resulting from reciprocal hybridization between A. broussonetii and A. frutescens on Tenerife. The four species and artificial F1 and F2 hybrids have previously been investigated morphologically and cytologically. Here, we examine population differentiation based on amplified fragment length polymorphism to get a better understanding of the genetic relationships among the species and the extent of hybridization. We aim to investigate if there is molecular support for treating the hybrid species as one taxon. Seven parental and four hybrid species populations (149 individuals) were analysed and we scored 85 polymorphic markers. A few (2–5) were private to each species but variably present and mostly rare. Our principal coordinate, STRUCTURE and BAPS analyses and AMOVA resulted in a clear separation of the parental species. The hybrid species were genetically less divergent but not identical. Our data indicate that hybridization and introgression are common in all these species on Tenerife and support the hypothesis that homoploid hybrid speciation has occurred repeatedly. The west Asian Viola sintenisii W.Becker, described from temperate woodlands of northern Iran and south-western Turkmenistan on the Caspian coast, was long considered a vicariant geographical subspecies of the mainly south European V. alba Besser. The new findings of V. sintenisii in four geographically separated stations in north-eastern Azerbaijan significantly expands its range of distribution. These occurrences are within the range of V. alba ssp. alba . Here the two taxa frequently co-occur but remain distinct and V. sintenisii is therefore justified at species level. It is likely that the two species are also sympatric in the Hyrcanian region, a range previously attributed uniquely to the latter. Viola sintenisii seems to be fairly common in the eastern parts of the Great Caucasus, but there are reasons to suggest that it has there been misinterpreted as V. suavis . Ploidal level information is of particular importance in intricate polyploid complexes such as in arctic-alpine Draba . Relative DNA content is reported for the tetra- and hexaploid D. lactea and seven of its low-ploid relatives. Flow cytometry was used to study 200 plants from 93 populations, the screening based on relative fluorescence. Absolute DNA content was determined by Feulgen densitometry for 13 plants from seven species, and reference chromosome numbers were determined in 12 plants (1–3 per species) representing six species. The plants grouped into diploids (2 n  = 16), tetraploids (2 n  = 32), hexaploids (2 n  = 48), and two triploids. Each ploidal level showed a linear increase in relative DNA content, pointing to a relatively recent polyploid origin. The diploid level was confirmed in D. nivalis, D. subcapitata, D. fladnizensis , and D. lonchocarpa. Draba palanderiana , reported previously as di-, tetra- and octoploid, was diploid in all investigated accessions. Hexa- and tetraploids were observed in D. lactea , in approximately the same ratio (8 : 1) as reported previously. Caribou and reindeer herds are declining across their circumpolar range, coincident with increasing arctic temperatures and precipitation, and anthropogenic landscape change. Here, we examine the mechanisms by which climate warming and anthropogenic landscape change influence caribou and reindeer population dynamics, namely changes in phenology, spatiotemporal changes in species overlap, and increased frequency of extreme weather events, and demonstrate that many caribou and reindeer herds show demographic signals consistent with these changes. While many caribou and reindeer populations historically fluctuated, the current, synchronous population declines emphasize the species' vulnerability to global change. Loss of caribou and reindeer will have significant, negative socioeconomic consequences for northern indigenous cultures.  相似文献

Contrasting with former taxonomic treatments, chromosome numbers and isozyme data support the delimitation of the seminiferous representatives of the Festuca brachyphylla complex in Svalbard into four species: F. baffinensis, F. brachyphylla, F. hyperborea and F. edlundiae. Unique enzyme markers were found for all species. Festuca brachyphylla proved hexaploid, and the others, tetraploid. The chromosome numbers of F. hyperborea and F brachyphylla (as circumscribed at present) are new to Svalbard. Festuca baffinensis is the most distinct species within the complex, probably representing a separate evolutionary lineage. The three other species seem closely related, showing mutually equidistant relationships. Some deviating plants found on disturbed ground might represent hybrid derivatives or an introduced foreign strain of the elsewhere variable F. brachyphylla. Materials of diploid F. ovina from northern Fennoscandia was enzymatically closely related to the F brachyphylla complex in Svalbard. Festuca brachyphylla, F. edlundiae , and F. hyperborea all had a stronger affinity to F ovina than to F baffinensis , indicating that the F brachyphylla complex is an artificial taxonomic group. There are reasons to believe that the origin of the polyploid taxa of the F brachyphylla complex can be traced to diploid species of the F. brachyphylla and F ovina complexes.  相似文献
