ABSTRACT Although North American wood ducks (Aix sponsa) are well-studied throughout their range, researchers know little about demographic and environmental factors influencing survival of ducklings and broods, which is necessary information for population management. We studied radiomarked female and duckling wood ducks that used nest boxes and palustrine wetlands at Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge (NNWR) in Mississippi, USA, in 1996–1999, and riverine wetlands of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Rivers and Waterway (TTRW) system in Alabama in 1998–1999. We estimated survival of ducklings and broods and evaluated potentially important predictors of duckling survival, including age and body mass of brood-rearing females, hatch date of ducklings, duckling mass, brood size at nest departure, inter-day travel distance by ducklings, site and habitat use, and daily minimum air temperature and precipitation. At NNWR, survival of 300 radiomarked ducklings ranged from 0.15 (95% CI = 0.04-0.27) to 0.24 (95% CI = 0.13-0.38) and was 0.21 (95% CI = 0.15-0.28) for 1996–1999. Our overall estimate of brood survival was 0.64 (n = 91; 95% CI = 0.54-0.73). At TTRW, survival of 129 radiomarked ducklings was 0.29 in 1998 (95% CI = 0.20-0.41) and 1999 (95% CI = 0.13-0.45) and was 0.29 (95% CI = 0.20-0.40) for 1998–1999. Our overall estimate of brood survival was 0.71 (n = 38; 95% CI = 0.56-0.85). At NNWR, models that included all predictor variables best explained variation in duckling survival. Akaike weight (wi) for the best model was 0.81, suggesting it was superior to other models (<0.01 < wi < 0.18). We detected 4 competing models for duckling survival at TTRW. Inter-day distance traveled by ducklings was important as this variable appeared in all 4 models; duckling survival was positively related to this variable. Patterns of habitat-related survival were similar at both study areas. Ducklings in broods that used scrub-shrub habitats disjunct from wetlands containing aggregations of nest boxes had greater survival probabilities than birds remaining in wetlands with such nest structures. Managers may increase local wood duck recruitment by promoting availability of suitable brood habitats (e.g., scrub-shrub wetlands) without aggregations of nest boxes that may attract predators and by dispersing nest boxes amid or adjacent to these habitats. We did not determine an optimal density of nest boxes relative to local or regional population goals, which remains important research and conservation needs.  相似文献

Gardin, S., Krystyn, L., Richoz, S., Bartolini, A. & Galbrun, B. 2012: Where and when the earliest coccolithophores? Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 507–523. New calcareous nannofossil analyses from the Northern Calcareous Alps of Austria are herein used to update and improve the state of knowledge about the oldest occurrence of coccolithophores reported in the literature. Previously reported Norian occurrences of coccoliths were based on an obsolete Triassic chronostratigraphy, in which the Rhaetian stage was subsumed into the Norian (‘Sevatian 2’). The oldest stratigraphical record of coccoliths spp. lies just below the Norian‐Rhaetian boundary and the first coccolith species, Crucirhabdus minutus, is recorded from the base of Rhaetian stage. The latter bio‐event is located just above the First Occurrence of the conodont Misikella posthersteni and the first occurrence of the ammonoid Paracochloceras suessi in the Steinbergkogel section (Austria), Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate for the Norian–Rhaetian boundary. The appearance of the coccolith Crucirhabdus minutus is seen as a robust biochronological datum that will provide useful constraints for Triassic biostratigraphy, palaeoclimatic modelling and phylogenetic reconstructions. The new calcareous nannofossil biochronology of Steinbergkogel that we present herein completes the existing biostratigraphic characterization of the Norian‐Rhaetian transition based on conodonts and ammonoids and strengthens the position of Steinbergkogel as the best GSSP proposed section for the base of the Rhaetian. The record of coccolithophores across the Norian–Rhaetian boundary at Steinbergkogel takes place along with a discernible increase in abundance of Prinsiosphaera triassica, as well as the appearance of Euconusphaera zlambachensis, which are the two most important Rhaetian pelagic carbonate producers. This succession of bio‐events is interpreted as the initiation of the pelagic carbonate production driven by the successful spreading of calcareous nannofossils in the Western Tethys during the Rhaetian. □Austria, Calcareous Alps, coccolithophores, Triassic.  相似文献

Respiratory activities in soybean seeds (Glvcine max (L.) Merr. cv. Chippewa 64) have been examined in the first minutes after water imbibition and after three hours of imbibition, using either particles or intact axes. Cyanide and azide were utilized as inhibitors of the cytochrome oxidase pathway of respiration, and SHAM inhibitions were interpreted as effects on the alternative pathway, since in unaged axes inhibitions by SHAM were obtained only when respiratory activity had either been restricted with inhibitors of the cytochrome oxidase pathway or expanded by an uncoupler (CCCP). From the experiments with these inhibitors, it is suggested that unaged seeds utilize both respiration pathways in the cotyledon but only the cytochrome pathway in the axis. Accelerated aging causes a marked deterioration of respiration, especially that through the cytochrome pathway, and there is an associated engagement of the alternative pathway in the seed axis. It is suggested that the lowering of respiratory activity and the shift in respiratory pathways may play a major role in the decline of germinability and vigor.  相似文献

The Little Bustard has undergone a steep reduction of its Western Palaearctic range over the last century. In the west of France, breeding populations declined by 96% from 1978 to 2008 in cultivated areas where grasslands have been converted into intensively managed annual crops. Little Bustard abundance and nest productivity have been monitored since 1995 in a 450‐km2 site in western France. We assessed the proximate causes of the decline of Little Bustards in French farming landscapes and quantified the effectiveness of conservation measures that aimed to reverse the decline. The decline of Little Bustard, from about 65 males in 1995 to just six males in 2003, could be related to a near absence of recruitment over this period. Since 2004, the establishment of more than 1300 ha of specifically targeted agri‐environment schemes (AES) in the study site has led to a sharp increase in female productivity, mainly associated with nesting in AES fields. By imposing constraints on mowing dates, AES have prevented nest destruction and female mortality during mowing and, by increasing plant species diversity, provided chicks with a higher abundance of grasshoppers. This has contributed to reversing the trend, and increasing the population to around 30 males in 2009. Conservation strategies involving specifically targeted AES based on the identification of limiting factors can help to reverse the decline of threatened species.  相似文献

In barley leaves, there is a dramatic alteration of gene expression upon treatment with jasmonates leading to the accumulation of newly formed proteins, designated as jasmonate-inducible proteins (JIPs). In the present study, a new jasmonate-inducible cDNA, designated pHvJS37, has been isolated by differential screening of a γgt10 cDNA library constructed from mRNA of jasmonate-treated barley leaf segments. The open reading frame (ORF) encodes a 39-9 kDa polypeptide which cross-reacts with antibodies raised against the in vivo JIP-37. The hydropathic plot suggests that the protein is mainly hydrophilic, containing two hydrophilic domains near the C-terminus. Database searches did not show any sequence homology of pHv.JS37 to known sequences. Southern analysis revealed at least two genes coding for JIP-37 which map to the distal portion of the long arm of chromosome 3 and are closely related to genes coding for JIP-23. The expression pattern of the JIP-37 genes over time shows differential responses to jasmonate, abscisic acid (ABA), osmotic stress (such as sorbitol treatment) and desiccation stress. No expression was found under salt stress. From experiments using an inhibitor and intermediates of jasmonate synthesis such as α-linolenic acid and 12-oxophytodienoic acid, we hypothesize that there is a stress-induced lipid-based signalling pathway in which an endogenous rise of jasmonate switches on JIP-37 gene expression. Using immunocytochemical techniques, JIP-37 was found to be simultaneously located in the nucleus, the cytoplasm and the vacuoles.  相似文献

The entry and exit phases of radioactive indoleacetic acid transportwere investigated in corn coleoptile sections. Compounds capableof inhibiting auxin transport, particularly p-chloromercuribenzoicacid and N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid, were found to only slightlyblock auxin entry but severely suppress auxin exit. An oxygendeficiency had little effect on auxin entry but was found tostrongly inhibit auxin transport and auxin exit. While indoleaceticacid uptake was proportional to concentration, the exit phasebecame apparently saturated at concentrations above 10–5M. Both entry and exit were found to have temperature coefficientsof about 2 or more. The low sensitivity of auxin entry to inhibitors,or to oxygen deficiency, and the linearity of entry over a wideconcentration range suggest a diffusion component in entry.The strong sensitivity of exit to inhibitors and to oxygen deficiencyconfirms the involvement of active processes in exit, as expectedof a secretion process. 1Present address: Research Division, Ontario Water ResourcesCommission, Toronto, Canada. 1. The importance of a long‐term ecological perspective is well documented, yet the availability of long‐term data remains limited. This paper highlights the value of long‐term ecological studies of freshwater macroinvertebrates by reviewing both the availability of long‐term data and recent ecological contributions based on them. 2. A survey of recent literature on stream macroinvertebrates identified 46 papers published between 1987 and 2004 that included long‐term (i.e. ≥5 years) data. Most recently published long‐term studies of stream macroinvertebrates began collecting data in the 1970s and 1980s and their duration (time between first and last year sampled) was relatively brief (median = 9 years, maximum = 96 years). Most studies did not expand their temporal perspective by incorporating older data collected by other researchers. 3. Recent long‐term studies of macroinvertebrates have made major contributions to our understanding of interannual variation and cycles, complex abiotic and biotic interactions, and natural and anthropogenic disturbance and recovery. Without these studies, we would know much less about the magnitude of natural temporal variation, the importance of physical and biological disturbance and interactions, the role of pathogens and introduced species, the overall impact of pollution and the effectiveness of protection and remediation efforts. 4. If we are to encourage long‐term perspectives in our science, we need to facilitate the transfer of individual studies, as well as knowledge and data, among scientists. This includes efforts to archive and annotate data more effectively, so that they can be more easily incorporated into future research.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Herbicides, commonly used for vegetation management in intensively managed pine (Pinus spp.) forests of the southeastern United States, with and without fire, may alter availability of quality forage for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus; deer), an economically and socially important game species in North America. Because greater forage quality yields greater deer growth and productivity and intensively managed pine forests are common in the southeastern United States, forest managers would benefit from an understanding of fire and herbicide effects on forage availability to improve habitat conditions for deer. Therefore, we evaluated independent and combined effects of fire and herbicide (i.e., imazapyr) on forage biomass and deer nutritional carrying capacity (CC) on land owned and managed by Weyerhaeuser NR Company in east-central Mississippi, USA. We used a randomized complete block design of 6 pine plantations (blocks) divided into 4 10-ha treatment plots to each of which we randomly assigned a treatment (burn-only, herbicide-only, burn + herbicide, and control). We estimated biomass (kg/ha) of moderate- and high-use deer forage plants during July of 1999–2008, then estimated CC for diets to support either body maintenance (6% crude protein) or lactation (14% crude protein) with a nutritional constraints model. Herbaceous forages responded positively to fire and herbicide application. In most years, CC estimates for maintenance and lactation were greater in burn + herbicide than in controls. Maintenance-level CC was always greater in burn + herbicide than in controls, except at 1 year posttreatment. Burn + herbicide was 2.6–8.3 times greater ( = 4.0) than control for lactation-level CC in 8 of 9 years posttreatment. We recommend fire and selective herbicides to increase high-quality deer forage in mid-rotation, intensively managed pine plantations.  相似文献
