In order to account for the known phenomena of the crustaceanmolt cycle, at least six factors must be postulated: a moltinghormone (20-OH-ecdysone), a molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH), ananecdysial limb autotomy factor, a proecdysial limb-autotomyfactor, a limb growth-inhibiting factor and an exuviation factor.Only the molting hormone and its derivatives have been chemicallywell defined. The various factors interact in complex ways tomaintain not only a coordinated proecdysial period in preparationfor exuviation but also a proecdysial period with the flexibilityto respond to such interim hazards as the loss of partiallyregenerated limbs.  相似文献

Abstract.  Hesperotettix viridis grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Melanoplinae) exhibit intra-individual variation in both mitochondrial 12S-valine-16S and nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA sequences. These findings violate core assumptions underlying DNA sequence data obtained via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification for use in molecular systematics investigations. Undetected intra-individual variation of this sort can confound phylogenetic analyses at a range of taxonomic levels. The use of a DNA extraction protocol designed to enrich mitochondrial DNA as well as an initial long PCR of approximately 40% of the grasshopper mitochondrial genome failed to control for the presence of paralogous mitochondrial DNA-like sequences within individuals. These findings constitute the first demonstration of intra-individual heterogeneity in mitochondrial DNA-like sequences in the grasshopper subfamily, Melanoplinae, and only the second report of intra-individual variation in nuclear ITS ribosomal DNA sequences in grasshoppers. The fact that intra-individual variation was detected in two independent DNA marker sets in the same organism strengthens the notion that the orthology of PCR-derived DNA sequences should be examined thoroughly prior to their use in molecular phylogenetic analyses or as DNA barcodes.  相似文献

The Australian Sphenomorphus group is a morphologically and ecologically diverse clade of lygosomine scincids, collectively comprising more than one‐half of the Australian scincid fauna. A previous phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA, and ND4 and adjacent tRNA sequences for a series of Australian Sphenomorphus group scincids recovered several well‐supported, major clades, although these were generally separated by relatively short branches associated with low support values. Applying a recently described methodology for inferring lineage‐level polytomies, I employ ATP synthetase‐β subunit intron sequences and the existing mitochondrial (mt)DNA data set (with sequences for additional taxa) to assess the hypothesis that the poorly resolved basal relationships within the Australian Sphenomorphus group are a consequence of the major clades having originated essentially simultaneously. Phylogenetic analyses of the separate mtDNA and intron sequence data reveal a number of congruent clades, including Anomalopus, Calyptotis, Ctenotus, Lerista, the Eulamprus quoyii group, the Glaphyromorphus crassicaudis group (including Glaphyromorphus cracens, Glaphyromorphus darwiniensis, and Glaphyromorphus fuscicaudis), Glaphyromorphus gracilipes + Hemiergis, Coeranoscincus reticulatus + Ophioscincus truncatus + Saiphos, and Eulamprus amplus + Eulamprus tenuis + Gnypetoscincus + Nangura. The relationships among these clades indicated by the two data sets, however, are generally incongruent. Although this may be partially ascribed to error in estimating phylogenetic relationships due to insufficient data, some incongruence is evident when uncertainty in inferred relationships is allowed for. Moreover, the congruent clades are typically separated by very short branches, several having a length insignificantly different from zero. These results suggest that initial diversification of Australian Sphenomorphus group scincids was rapid relative to the substitution rates of the mtDNA and intron fragments considered, if not essentially simultaneous. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 92 , 347–366.  相似文献

Foam-rubber, carpet-underlay discs placed in position around the base of the stem directly after transplanting were as effective as certain recommended insecticides in protecting brassica plants from damage by cabbage root fly (Delia radicum). The three factors that contributed to the overall effectiveness of the discs were that only half as many eggs were laid around plants protected with discs as around unprotected plants, that predatory ground beetles preferred to aggregate in the humid microhabitat beneath the discs and consequently ate proportionally more fly eggs/larvae and that the discs acted as a mulch, conserving water around the roots of the plants, and thereby permitting them to tolerate greater amounts of damage. Application of the repellent benzyl benzoate to the discs improved effectiveness but 12 other insect repellents and two sticky compounds gave no improvement and most were phytotoxic. Root drenches of the insecticide chlorfenvinphos were repellent, reducing oviposition by approximately 25%. The costs of protecting brassica transplants with either discs or insecticide were similar and discs thus appear to be a reasonable method of cabbage root fly control for small-scale use.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 Emergence of cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.), from overwintering populations of puparia collected from twenty-one sites in south-west Lancashire, was extremely variable.
  • 2 The patterns of emergence indicated that there were two extreme biotypes, one with early- and the other with late-emerging flies. There was also evidence of an intermediate biotype, tending more to early than to late emergence.
  • 3 This gradient of biotypes, or clinal divergence, was maintained by populations breeding at different times and by females mating close to their sites of emergence. Non-dispersive females then perpetuated their genotype within their own locality.
  • 4 The time of emergence was not obviously associated with the type of host-crop on which larvae had developed.
  • 5 The late-emerging biotype was most prevalent around Halsall. The minimum distance between populations of the late- and the early-emerging biotypes was 16 km. 20 km south-east from Halsall only half of the fly population was early-emerging, possibly a result of a displacement of the Halsall biotype by the prevailing NW wind.
  • 6 Regional-based forecasts will need to take into account the emergence characteristics of the populations to predict the peak periods of cabbage root fly activity adequately in south-west Lancashire and other areas where emergence patterns differ.

The activity of 5′-nucleotidase and ouabain-sensitive Na/K ATPase was determined in seven different mouse melanoma cell lines. Ouabain-sensitive Na/K ATPase activity was found in NP40-treated cell homogenates of all cell lines. However, 5′-nucleotidase activity was found in only one mouse melanoma cell line—JB/RH. The absence of expression of 5′-nucleotidase activity in the other six cell lines is not associated with pigmentation in melanoma cells, nor is the gene switched off in all transformed melanocytes of C57BL/6 origin.  相似文献
