Four behavioral experiments involving a total of 19 adult male and 27 adult spayed female rhesus monkeys failed to reveal significant sexual stimulatory properties of vaginal lavages obtained from estrogen-treated donor females when the material was applied to spayed nonestrogenized recipient females. However, all but one of the males copulated to ejaculation when paired with estrogenized females. Two of three males showed moderate increases in sexual behavior with recipients when the vaginal lavage tested was contaminated with 24-hr-old ejaculate. When purified aliphatic acids were applied to spayed nonestrogenized recepients, one of two males showed increased frequencies of mounting behavior, but intromissions and ejaculations were not displayed.Quantitative analyses of short chain aliphatic acids in vaginal lavages, the hypothesized active component, revealed that (a) spayed females had nondetectable levels of aliphatic acids; (b) daily estradiol benzoate treatment for 6–10 days (25 μg/day i.m.) induced detectable levels of acetic, propionic, and butyric acids; (c) exposure to estradiol for six months resulted in a fairly constant plateau of aliphatic acid concentrations; and (d) ejaculate from the male caused up to fivefold elevations in the aliphatic acid concentrations.Three intact females were studied throughout a menstrual cycle, and the peak values of aliphatic acids occurred in the luteal phase, several days after presumed ovulation. Three spayed females treated chronically with estradiol were given four daily injections of 5 mg progesterone, and the mean concentrations of aliphatic acids increased from 199.7 to 801.0 μg/ml. However, the endocrine conditions associated with maximum concentrations of aliphatic acids in either intact or spayed females are known from other studies to be associated with decreased likelihood of copulation.We conclude that for the majority of males studied, the application of vaginal lavages obtained from estrogenized donors did not significantly increase copulatory behavior with spayed, nonestrogenized recipient females. Moreover, the data from aliphatic acid determinations suggest that increases in concentrations of these substances are not always associated with facilitation of copulation, since the largest increases were found either (1) following copulation to ejaculation, (2) during the luteal phase in cycles free of copulation, or (3) following progesterone treatment of spayed, estrogenized females. Finally, comparison of our results with those from other laboratories suggests that the mechanism involved in positive effects may depend upon associative learning or upon extinction and disinhibition of sexual interest.  相似文献

We examined seasonal changes in microhabitat use by the murid rodents Akodon azarae and Calomys laucha in agroecosystems of the former pampa region of Argentina. In summer, trap data showed that both species had low densities and were almost equally distributed between the mature cropfields and their surrounding weedy borders. Analysis of vegetation at the trap sites revealed no selection for microhabitats at the borders, whereas in the cropfields both species shared preferences for covered microhabitats. In contrast, winter data revealed a sharp habitat segregation, being Calomys numerically dominant in post-harvest cropfields and Akodon more abundant in borders. Moreover, there were clear differences in microhabitat selection at the borders, A. azarae occupying the more covered microhabitats and C. laucha the less covered. Breadth and overlap of niches were calculated using principal component analysis, in order to recognize interspecific competition and its influence on community niche space. Available evidence indicates that the structure of this rodent community is strongly influenced by seasonal changes in habitat stucture and rodent abundance. The socially dominant A. azarae retains the best part of the available niche space, a fact becoming more evident under the harsh winter conditions.  相似文献

We report our experience with an ultrasound system to measure esophageal varix pressure in an in vitro model. The ultrasound system consists of a 12.5 MHz frequency intraluminal ultrasound probe, a water infusion catheter, and a manometry catheter, all contained within a nondistensible latex bag. Esophagi and external jugular veins were harvested from five pigs. The vein and ultrasound system were placed inside the esophagus. One end of the vein was connected to a water reservoir to modulate its pressure; the other end was connected in two different ways to simulate hydrodynamic and hydrostatic flow conditions. The bag was inflated with water until vein occlusion was discernible on the ultrasound images. The influences of vein pressure, vein cross-sectional area and esophageal elasticity on the ultrasound measurement of vein pressure were assessed. A total of 108 trials were performed at nine different vein pressures. Complete vein occlusion occurred when the bag pressure was slightly greater (1.4 +/- 0.7 mmHg) than the vein pressure. For a vein pressure of 25 mmHg, the average occlusion and opening pressures were 27 +/- 0.2 and 25.7 +/- 0.3 mmHg, respectively (P < .05) suggesting that the vein opening pressure on the ultrasound images is more accurate than the vein closing pressure. In conclusion, the ultrasound technique can accurately measure intravariceal pressure in vitro. The bag pressure at the point of vein reopening is the best determinant of the vein pressure.  相似文献

We studied habitat preferences and intra and interspecific density-dependent effects on habitat selection by Akodon azarae and Calomys laucha between maize fields and their adjacent borders, during different developmental stages of the crop. Akodon azarae detected quantitative differences between habitats, using preferentially borders throughout the year, while C. laucha perceived borders and cropfields as quantitatively similar during spring and summer and it detected borders as quantitatively better at the high density period (autumn and winter). These results support the prediction of differential habitat preferences as a model of community organisation at the low density period, while they are consistent with shared habitat preferences during autumn and winter when both species apparently coexist in the better habitat (border). Akodon azarae showed intraspecific density-dependent habitat selection throughout the year, except in spring, while habitat selection by C. laucha was density-dependent in spring, autumn and winter. The effect of interspecific density on habitat selection was detected in both habitats and changed seasonally. The effect of A. azarae over C. laucha by resources exploitation was detected in borders, while competitive effects of C. laucha over A. azarae was observed within cropfields. Both species were more affected by exploitation competition than interference, which was more common in borders than in maize fields. We conclude that seasonally have a profound effect in habitat selection of these species because it changes the intensity of intra and interspecific competition and affects different habitat preferences and basic suitability of habitats. In order to determine if the absence of vitamin C in the diet of capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) causes scurvy, a group of seven young individuals were fed food pellets without ascorbic acid, while another group of eight individuals received the same food with 1 g of ascorbic acid per animal per day. Animals in the first group developed signs of scurvy-like gingivitis, breaking of the incisors and death of one animal. Clinical signs appeared between 25 and 104 days from the beginning of the trial in all individuals. Growth rates of individuals deprived of vitamin C was considerably less than those observed in the control group. Deficiency of ascorbic acid had a severe effect on reproduction of another population of captive capybaras. We found that the decrease in ascorbic acid content in the diet affected pregnancy, especially during the first stages. The results obtained suggest that it is necessary to supply a suitable quantity of vitamin C in the diet of this species in captivity.  相似文献

粘虫成虫需补充取食糖类,方能完成飞翔(包括迁飞)、交配、产卵等活动。我们用了18种糖类来测定粘虫取食的范围,并观察糖类对生殖力的效应。试验结果表明:粘虫能取食葡萄糖、果糖、甘露糖、半乳糖、蔗糖、麦芽糖、海藻糖、棉子糖、甘油、甘露醇等,能完成正常生殖活动,产下数百粒卵,或上千粒卵,卵能孵化;但取食水、木糖、山梨糖、乳糖、糊精、淀粉、糖元等后,只能产下几粒卵,卵不能孵化。食量依糖液浓度而稍有变化,产卵前期取食量最高。 文中讨论各种糖的营养效价,并比较了各种糖类对不同昆虫生存、飞翔、生殖等效应的异同。  相似文献

Portal hypertension is a common complication of chronic liver disease. Conventional therapy consists of surgery and palliative measures for the hemodynamic problem. It has been recently reported that somatostatin may reduce portal pressure without altering the systemic circulation and so reducing hepatic blood flow. This peptide also causes a significant fall in azygos circulation in patients with esophageal varices. The mechanism of this effect is unclear although suppression of intestinal vasodilating hormones and of glucagon have been claimed to play a role. Comparative clinical studies have shown somatostatin to be superior to the standard vasopressin treatment. Recent findings suggest that the efficacy of somatostatin can be increased by administering this peptide in repeated intravenous bolus injections. New derivatives, specially long-acting peptides, may eventually prove beneficial in the chronic treatment of this complication.  相似文献

Migration, invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis associated with cancer depend on the surrounding microenvironment. Angiogenesis, the growth of new capillaries, is a regulator of cancer growth and a useful target for cancer therapy. We examined matrix protein interactions in a gastric cancer cell culture that was treated with different doses of caffeic acid (3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid) phenethyl ester (CAPE). We also investigated the relations among the levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), endostatin (ES) and trombospondin-1 (TSP-1). Cytotoxity of CAPE was measured using the 3-(4,5-dmethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. We examined the behavior of cells on laminin and collagen I coated surfaces in response to the angiogenic effect of these matrix molecules. We examined the protein alterations of these matrix molecules immunohistochemically and measured the levels of VEGF, MMP-9, ES and TSP-1 using the ELISA test. We showed that application of CAPE to the gastric cancer cell line on tissue culture plastic, laminin and collagen I significantly decreased the VEGF and MMP-9 protein levels. We found that TSP-1 levels were increased significantly in the gastric cancer cells after application of CAPE. The protein levels of gastric cancer cells also were increased significantly when tissue was cultured on laminin and collagen I. Application of CAPE to cells on laminin or collagen I coated surfaces significantly increased all of the proteins except ES. ES levels were increased on the collagen I covered surfaces, but the laminin surface decreased the levels of ES significantly. We demonstrated the beneficial effect of CAPE on a gastric cancer cell line including inhibition of proliferation and induction of some proteins that might be related to decreased angiogenesis.  相似文献
