Horizontal gene transfer often leads to phenotypic changes within recipient organisms independent of any immediate evolutionary benefits. While secondary phenotypic effects of horizontal transfer (i.e., changes in growth rates) have been demonstrated and studied across a variety of systems using relatively small plasmids and phage, little is known about the magnitude or number of such costs after the transfer of larger regions. Here we describe numerous phenotypic changes that occur after a large-scale horizontal transfer event (∼1 Mb megaplasmid) within Pseudomonas stutzeri including sensitization to various stresses as well as changes in bacterial behavior. These results highlight the power of horizontal transfer to shift pleiotropic relationships and cellular networks within bacterial genomes. They also provide an important context for how secondary effects of transfer can bias evolutionary trajectories and interactions between species. Lastly, these results and system provide a foundation to investigate evolutionary consequences in real time as newly acquired regions are ameliorated and integrated into new genomic contexts.  相似文献

Nicotinic cholinergic receptor binding sites labeled by [3H]acetylcholine were measured in the cerebral cortices, thalami, striata, and hypothalami of rats lesioned by intraventricular injection of either 6-hydroxydopamine or 5, 7-dihydroxytryptamine. In addition, [3H]acetylcholine binding sites were measured in the cerebral cortices of rats lesioned by injection of ibotenic acid into the nucleus basalis magnocellularis. [3H]Acetylcholine binding was significantly decreased in the striata and hypothalami of both 6-hydroxydopamine- and 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine-lesioned rats. There was no change in binding in the cortex or thalamus by either lesion. Ibotenic acid lesions of the nucleus basalis magnocellularis, which projects cholinergic axons to the cortex, did not alter [3H]acetylcholine binding. These results provide evidence for a presynaptic location of nicotinic cholinergic binding sites on catecholamine and serotonin axons in the striatum and hypothalamus.  相似文献

The krill surplus hypothesis of unlimited prey resources available for Antarctic predators due to commercial whaling in the 20th century has remained largely untested since the 1970s. Rapid warming of the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) over the past 50 years has resulted in decreased seasonal ice cover and a reduction of krill. The latter is being exacerbated by a commercial krill fishery in the region. Despite this, humpback whale populations have increased but may be at a threshold for growth based on these human-induced changes. Understanding how climate-mediated variation in prey availability influences humpback whale population dynamics is critical for focused management and conservation actions. Using an 8-year dataset (2013–2020), we show that inter-annual humpback whale pregnancy rates, as determined from skin-blubber biopsy samples (n = 616), are positively correlated with krill availability and fluctuations in ice cover in the previous year. Pregnancy rates showed significant inter-annual variability, between 29% and 86%. Our results indicate that krill availability is in fact limiting and affecting reproductive rates, in contrast to the krill surplus hypothesis. This suggests that this population of humpback whales may be at a threshold for population growth due to prey limitations. As a result, continued warming and increased fishing along the WAP, which continue to reduce krill stocks, will likely impact this humpback whale population and other krill predators in the region. Humpback whales are sentinel species of ecosystem health, and changes in pregnancy rates can provide quantifiable signals of the impact of environmental change at the population level. Our findings must be considered paramount in developing new and more restrictive conservation and management plans for the Antarctic marine ecosystem and minimizing the negative impacts of human activities in the region.  相似文献

The ever increasing deficit of protein on the globe has made it necessary to search for its new sources. Due to this reason attention was focussed on the fungusB. theobromae Pat. cultivated on the carbohydrates medium. Its protein content converted into dry matter claims on the average 12.5 %, whereof the digestible protein constitutes a half of that value. The analysis of aminoacid composition has revealed that the protein is not of full value in the sense of nourishment, since it does not contain methionine. Nevertheless, it may be looked upon as a certain kind of protein supplement to the food of reared animals, because it is deprived of any dangerous aflatoxins and antibiotic substances.  相似文献

Summary Twenty-one patients with stage III M0 non-oat cell bronchogenic carcinoma confined to the thorax were randomized to receive either intrapleural BCG (107 cfu, Tice strain) or intrapleural saline 3 weeks prior to beginning combined irradiation and chemotherapy. Radiation to the primary tumor and regional nodes was given at a dose of 3,000 rad in ten sessions and was followed in 7–14 days by CAMP chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, adriamycin, methotrexate, and procarbazine) for a planned duration of 6 months. Isoniazid, 300 mg/day, was given to all patients for 3 months starting 1 week after intrapleural therapy. There were no significant differences in pretreatment prognostic factors or in response to radiation therapy. The patients receiving intrapleural BCG in addition to radiation and chemotherapy had a median survival of 18 weeks, significantly shorter than that for the patients receiving intrapleural saline (54 weeks, P=0.017).Presented in part at the 16th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, San Diego, California, May 27, 1980  相似文献

Anabaena spiroides has the ability to maintain intense biomass production for extensive periods in the epilimnion of a small eutrophic lake characterized by conditions shown to cause photooxidative death in a number of other phytoplankton. By the enhancement of carotenoid synthesis chlorophyll a was protected from photooxidation and prevented from catalyzing other photooxidative reactions within the cells. By temporally separating CO2 and N2 fixation, maximum utilization of photosynthetically active radiation was achieved. Because CO2 fixation was more sensitive than N2 fixation to a high oxygen concentration, the former was maximized during morning hours, before the afternoon buildup of dissolved oxygen. The diurnal partitioning of carbon and N2 fixation has two additional advantages; possible competition for reductant-generating compounds is minimized, and adequate endogenous pools of carbon skeletons are assured to accept newly fixed ammonia. Hence, Anabaena, far from undergoing photooxidative death, appears to utilize a physiological strategy which allows optimization of radiant energy use for reductive processes and dominance of surface waters and shading of deeper phytoplankton during summer blooms.  相似文献

For many marine species, locations of key foraging areas are not well defined. We used satellite telemetry and switching state‐space modeling (SSM) to identify distinct foraging areas used by Kemp's ridley turtles (Lepidochelys kempii) tagged after nesting during 1998–2011 at Padre Island National Seashore, Texas, USA (PAIS;= 22), and Rancho Nuevo, Tamaulipas, Mexico (RN;= 9). Overall, turtles traveled a mean distance of 793.1 km (±347.8 SD) to foraging sites, where 24 of 31 turtles showed foraging area fidelity (FAF) over time (= 22 in USA,= 2 in Mexico). Multiple turtles foraged along their migratory route, prior to arrival at their “final” foraging sites. We identified new foraging “hotspots” where adult female Kemp's ridley turtles spent 44% of their time during tracking (i.e., 2641/6009 tracking days in foraging mode). Nearshore Gulf of Mexico waters served as foraging habitat for all turtles tracked in this study; final foraging sites were located in water <68 m deep and a mean distance of 33.2 km (±25.3 SD) from the nearest mainland coast. Distance to release site, distance to mainland shore, annual mean sea surface temperature, bathymetry, and net primary production were significant predictors of sites where turtles spent large numbers of days in foraging mode. Spatial similarity of particular foraging sites selected by different turtles over the 13‐year tracking period indicates that these areas represent critical foraging habitat, particularly in waters off Louisiana. Furthermore, the wide distribution of foraging sites indicates that a foraging corridor exists for Kemp's ridleys in the Gulf. Our results highlight the need for further study of environmental and bathymetric components of foraging sites and prey resources contained therein, as well as international cooperation to protect essential at‐sea foraging habitats for this imperiled species.  相似文献

For gadolinium chelates, we determined that there is a linear correlation between calculated solvent-accessible surface area and q-value, the number of rapidly exchanging water molecules directly bound to the gadolinium ion. A calibration curve was developed to predict q-value based on the solvent-accessible surface area of gadolinium. Previous studies showed that nocturnal geckos evolved a low energetic cost of locomotion (Cmin), which increases maximum aerobic speed and partially offsets the decrease in maximal oxygen consumption caused by activity at low nocturnal temperatures. Because the advantage of a low Cmin should apply at high diurnal temperatures as well as at low nocturnal temperatures, I hypothesized that Cmin remained low in geckos that have secondarily evolved diurnality. I measured Cmin in two secondarily diurnal gecko species, Rhoptropus bradfieldi (4.7 g+/-0.71 SE) and Phelsuma madagascariensis (23.9 g+/-3.7 SE), during steady exercise on a treadmill and rejected the hypothesis that secondarily diurnal geckos retain the low Cmin of their nocturnal ancestors. The Cmin in R. bradfieldi (2.468 mL O2 g-1 km-1+/-0.489 SE) and P. madagascariensis (1.389 mL O2 g-1 km-1+/-0.119 SE) returned to values typical of ancestrally diurnal lizards. This suggests that there is a trade-off that outweighs the performance advantage of low Cmin in a diurnal environment and that may cause an evolutionary association between Cmin and activity time (diurnality/nocturnality).  相似文献
