Abstract  All ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) are highly eusocial insects that are characterized by reproductive division of labor with sterile castes (worker and soldier) helping fertile castes (queen and male) to reproduce.
Ant societies, like other complex animal societies, have developed a sophisticated communication system, in which recognition behaviors are frequently involved Recognition abilities allow individuals to orient and modulate their behaviors effectively and appropriately in response to the characteristics andlor signals expressed by other organisms. Among recognition behaviors, nestmate recognition and kin recognition mechanisms have attracted great attention of sociobiologists, ecologists, insect physiologists and biochemists since 1970's. This is parallel with the popularization of Hamilton's kin selection theory. The present paper aims at reviewing the current understanding on nestmate/kin recognition in ants. This review consists of three parts. The first part concerns the diversity of recognition behaviors and their ecological implications with emphasis on nestmatelkin recognition; in the second part, the current understandings on the mechanism of nestmatelkin recognition are outlined; and in the third part, we discuss the ontogenetic development of nestmate recognition behavior and naturally mixed colonies. The study of the integration mechanism of social parasite may provide heuristic clues to the understanding of kin/nestmate recognition system.  相似文献

Changes of the DNA packaging mode during boar sperm maturation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Changes in the mode of DNA packaging in nuclei during spermatogenesis were studied by measuring of the fluorescence anisotropy decay of an ethidium dye intercalated in the DNA in whole nuclei. The nuclei were isolated from boar spermatid or sperm cells at three distinct stages of spermatogenesis: just before the completion of a maturation process in the testis (late spermatid), immediately after a subsequent transformation into spermatozoa (caput spermatozoon), and after full maturation (cauda spermatozoon). Although these three kinds of nucleus were morphologically indistinguishable from each other, the anisotropy decay detected a clear difference. In the late spermatid nuclei, in which the replacement of histones by protamine was still in progress, the anisotropy decayed extensively. The decay suggested that the DNA in the spermatid nuclei contained very flexible regions, in which the interaction of the DNA and proteins may be weak. The rapid and extensive anisotropy decay was absent in the caput and cauda nuclei. The flexible portions must have turned into very rigid structure during transformation from the late spermatid into the caput spermatozoon.  相似文献

Wild-type Sendai virus is exclusively pneumotropic in mice, while a host range mutant, F1-R, is pantropic. The latter was attributed to structural changes in the fusion (F) glycoprotein, which was cleaved by ubiquitous proteases present in many organs (M. Tashiro, E. Pritzer, M. A. Khoshnan, M. Yamakawa, K. Kuroda, H.-D. Klenk, R. Rott, and J. T. Seto, Virology 165:577-583, 1988). These studies were extended by investigating, by use of an organ block culture system of mice, whether differences exist in the susceptibility of the lung and the other organs to the viruses and in proteolytic activation of the F protein of the viruses. Block cultures of mouse organs were shown to synthesize the viral polypeptides and to support productive infections by the viruses. These findings ruled out the possibility that pneumotropism of wild-type virus results because only the respiratory organs are susceptible to the virus. Progeny virus of F1-R was produced in the activated form as shown by infectivity assays and proteolytic cleavage of the F protein in the infected organ cultures. On the other hand, much of wild-type virus produced in cultures of organs other than lung remained nonactivated. The findings indicate that the F protein of wild-type virus was poorly activated by ubiquitous proteases which efficiently activated the F protein of F1-R. Thus, the activating protease for wild-type F protein is present only in the respiratory organs. These results, taken together with a comparison of the predicted amino acid substitutions between the viruses, strongly suggest that the different efficiencies among mouse organs in the proteolytic activation of F protein must be the primary determinant for organ tropism of Sendai virus. Additionally, immunoelectron microscopic examination of the mouse bronchus indicated that the budding site of wild-type virus was restricted to the apical domain of the epithelium, whereas budding by F1-R occurred at the apical and basal domains. Bipolar budding was also observed in MDCK monolayers infected with F1-R. The differential budding site at the primary target of infection may be an additional determinant for organ tropism of Sendai virus in mice.  相似文献

Two new human cell lines, RCM-1 and CoCM-1, have been established from primary colorectal adenocarcinomas. Both cell lines were unique in that the cultures secreted trypsin inhibitors in vitro. The activities of these inhibitors were accumulated in serum-free media of both cell lines over a period of several days. Two inhibitors (PI-1 and PI-2) were isolated from serum-free conditioned medium in which RCM-1 was grown by anion-exchange and gel filtration high-performance liquid chromatography. PI-1 inhibited trypsin and chymotrypsin strongly, and pancreatic elastase weakly. Its molecular weight was about 57 kilodaltons (Kd) as determined by gel filtration chromatography. It cross-reacted with the antiserum elicited against human α1-antitrypsin in double immunodiffusion. PI-1 corresponding to α1 - antitrypsin was also demonstrated immunohistochemically in both cell lines. PI-2 inhibited trypsin strongly, and chymotrypsin, kallikrein and plasmin weakly. It had higher molecular weight (200–300 Kd) than that of PI-1, and did not crossreact with antisera against human α1-antitrypsin, α2-macroglobulin, α1-antichymotrypsin, α2-plasmin inhibitor, inter-α-trypsin inhibitor and urinary trypsin inhibitor. RCM-1 and CoCM-1 are the first colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines that secrete functionally active trypsin inhibitors, including α1-antitrypsin in vitro, and are useful for the study of tumor-cell derived proteinase inhibitors.  相似文献

1. CD spectra showed that the fowl protamine, galline, has an unordered structure rich in reverse turns in neutral solution. Eight reverse turns were predicted to be present in the galline molecule on the basis of its amino acid sequence. Spectrophotometric analyses revealed that galline efficiently bound to DNA in 0.25 mM EDTA/10 mM Tricine-HCl, pH 7.4, but hardly so in 30 mM NaCl/3 mM sodium citrate, pH 7.0. Citrate ions bound specifically to the galline molecule, causing a conformational change in it. As a result, galline could not interact with DNA. 2. The concentration of unbound galline in a mixture of DNA and galline in 100 mM NaCl/50 mM Tricine-HCl, pH 7.4, at 37 C was determined by measurement of the intrinsic fluorescence of tyrosine residues of galline in the supernatant after ultracentrifugation of the mixture. The Scatchard plot showed positive co-operativity in the binding of galline to DNA and the binding parameters were determined: the co-operative binding constant (Kc) = 3.3 X 10(7)M-1, the co-operativity factor (q) = 800, and the number of nucleotides of DNA occupied by one galline molecule (n) = 28. The Kc and q values were intermediate between those for clupeine Z from herring sperm and S-methyl protamine from boar sperm. That is, the binding constants of protamine as to DNA decrease in the order of herring, fowl, and boar, while the co-operativities in binding increase in that order.  相似文献

A medium-duration pigeonpea cultivar (ICP 1–6) and a hybrid sorghum (CSH 5) were grown on a shallow Alfisol in monocropping and intercropping systems. Using a monolith method, spatial distribution of nodulation, acetylene reduction activity (ARA) and root respiration were measured. The number, mass and ARA of nodules decreased exponentially with distance from the plant base except at the late reproductive stage. Nodulation and ARA tended to be higher in the intercrop than in the monocrop.Respiration rate of roots increased with distance from the plant base and reached a maximum value at about 20–30 cm. The rate was higher in pigeonpea than in sorghum and also higher in intercrop than in monocrop. This study suggests that pigeonpea roots are physiologically more active than sorghum roots, implying that pigeonpea may become a strong competitor for nutrients in the soil when intercropped. The nitrogen-fixing ability of pigeonpea may be enhanced by intercropping because the sorghum rapidly absorbed inorganic N which would otherwise inhibit N2 fixation.  相似文献
