The population of bream in L. Peipsi was studied with respect to age, growth rate, condition factor (according to Fulton) and length-weight relationship in 1994. That autumn the bream population in L. Peipsi consisted of fishes aged from 0+ to 15+. During the first year bream reached an average body length of 7.9 cm (the commercial legal size (30 cm) was usually attained by the end of the 5th–6th year. The condition of bream in this lake was above the average of Estonian lakes. The relatively good growth rate and condition of bream in the lake indicates that the waterbody is appropriate for this fish.  相似文献

Metallothionein-3 (MT-3) is a brain-specific isoform of metallothioneins, which is down-regulated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), inhibits the growth of neurons in vitro, and differs from common MTs also in gene regulation. To elucidate the differences in structure and function between MT-3 and common MTs, Zn2+ and Cd2+ binding to MT-3 and MT-1 were studied using electrospray ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (ESI TOF MS) at pH values between 7.5 and 2.7. The metal binding properties of MT-3 differ considerably from those of MT-1. After reconstitution with a metal excess, metallated MT-3 exists as a mixture of Zn7MT-3 (or Cd7MT-3, respectively) and several metalloforms with stoichiometries below and above seven. In contrast, MT-1 exists as a single Zn7MT-1 (or Cd7MT-1). Lowering of pH leads to a stepwise release of metals from metallated MT-3, first from extra sites, then from the 3-metal cluster and finally from the 4-metal cluster. At acidic pH values the 4-metal cluster of MT-3 is slightly more stable than that of MT-1. The results demonstrate higher structural plasticity, dynamics and metal binding capacity of MT-3 than of MT-1, which makes MT-3 suitable as a zinc buffer-transfer molecule in zinc-enriched neurons functioning at conditions of fluctuating zinc concentrations.  相似文献

The pollen accumulation rates of four lakes in different regions of Estonia were estimated in order to study the relationship between pollen influx and the character and intensity of disturbances in the pollen catchment area. The pollen influx data obtained are in accordance with model calculations on the size of the pollen source areas. The influx of arboreal pollen and that of the dominant taxa (mainly Pinus) in the lakes investigated shows that, in the case of small lakes (area 3-6ha) in a forested landscapes, the bulk of the pollen originates from an area within 100-200m around the lake. The distribution patterns of influx from two lakes situated close to each other but at different distances from forest fires show that past disturbances can be reliably detected when the disturbance occurred in the immediate vicinity of the lake and at least 25% of the local pollen source area was involved. In the case of a large lake (137ha) only fires embracing thousands of hectares can be detected in the pollen diagrams.  相似文献

The reaction of Cd5Zn2-metallothionein (MT) with 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (Nbs2) has been studied at different reagent stoichiometries, pH and temperature conditions and in the presence of several ligands. At stoichiometries of Nbs2 to MT from 0.5 to 5, the reaction followed first order kinetics. The first order rate constants obtained were independent from the concentration of Nbs2 but were linearly dependent on the concentration of MT. At higher Nbs2/MT stoichiometries, the reaction deviates from first order kinetics and the observed rate constant increases. The reactivity of MT towards Nbs2 has been probed at 4 microM concentration of both reagents where the reaction is monophasic and is characterized by a linear Arrhenius plot (Ea = 45.8 +/- 2.7 kJ.mol-1). It has been demonstrated that metal release at low pH or subtraction from MT by EDTA substantially increases the reactivity of MT towards Nbs2. At the same time, a number of nonmetallic ligands moderately accelerate the reaction of MT with Nbs2 and hyperbolic dose-response curves were obtained. The data have been interpreted with the binding of ligands to MT and following MT. Ligand binding constants were calculated as follows: ATP, K = 0.31 +/- 0.06 mM; ADP, K = 0.26 +/- 0.07 mM. Several compounds such as AMP, S-methylglutathione, and phosphate had no effect on the reaction, but Zn2+ ions showed an inhibitory effect at micromolar concentrations.  相似文献

The population of pikeperch in L. Peipsi was studied with respect to average number per haul, length distribution of fishes in experimental catches, condition factor (according to Fulton) and length-weight relationship in autumn 1993–1995.The relatively good growth rate and condition of pikeperch in the lake indicates that the waterbody is suitable for this fish. However, the length and age distribution of pikeperch in different years as well as the decreasing total number of fishes in catches demonstrate that the population of pikeperch is suppressed due to overfishing during the last years.  相似文献

Historical spawning grounds for sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus L.) in most Portuguese river basins are becoming inaccessible due to the construction of impassable dams and/or weirs. Studies like the one described in this paper are particularly important in areas like the Vouga river basin, where there is a considerable fishing effort from both professional fishermen and poachers. In fact, for management and conservation purposes, it is important to clarify several aspects of the sea lamprey spawning run in this particular watershed. Therefore, a total of 30 radio tagged, migrating sea lampreys were released in the River Vouga and some of its main tributaries during 2004 and 2005. Results from the tracking sessions were used to determine the effect of poaching on the spawners’ population and the characteristics of the resting sites used during the upstream movement. The rivers’ stretches were also characterized according to the type of substrate present in the riverbed and flow type, in order to determine its aptitude to constitute appropriate spawning habitats for sea lampreys. We have identified in the upstream stretches of River Vouga, and in the tributary River Caima, characteristics that are particularly suitable for the construction of nests by the spawners. Presence of larvae provided evidence that spawners migrated into the River Vouga’s upper reaches. However, abundance and age class diversity appeared to be higher downstream of Sernada and Carvoeiro weirs, corroborating the telemetry data which suggested difficulty in passing these obstacles during low precipitation years. In the River Caima, migration was most predictable, which might be related to daily water releases from a small hydropower dam at dusk, that stimulated the lampreys to resume migration. Poaching has had a considerable negative effect on the success of the tagged lampreys’ migration: 76% of the animals released during 2005 were captured. Data for the vegetation periods (May–November) of 1985–2003 were used to collate the nutrient content and biomass of the most important phytoplankton groups in Lake Peipsi (Estonia). Two periods differing in external nutrient load and water level were compared by analysis of variance. The years 1985–1988 were characterized by the highest loads of nitrogen and phosphorus, high water level and cool summers. The years 2000–2003 were distinguished by low or medium water levels and warm summers. The first period showed statistically significantly higher values of total nitrogen (Ntot) and a higher Ntot:Ptot mass ratio. The second period showed a higher content of total phosphorus (Ptot), a higher ratio of dissolved inorganic compounds N to P and higher phytoplankton and cyanobacterial biomasses. Comparison between parts of the lake demonstrated that the differences between the two periods were more evident in the shallower and strongly eutrophic parts, Lake Pihkva and Lake Lämmijärv, than in the largest and deepest part, the moderately eutrophic Lake Peipsi s.s. Temperature and water level acted synergistically and evidently influenced phytoplankton via nutrients, promoting internal loading when the water level was low and the temperature high. The effect of water level was stronger in the shallowest part, Lake Pihkva. The difference in Ptot content between the southern and northern parts was twofold; the Ntot:Ptot mass ratio was significantly lower in the southern parts, and phytoplankton biomass (particularly the biomass of cyanobacteria) was significantly higher for Lake Pihkva and Lake Lämmijärv than for Lake Peipsi s.s.  相似文献

We investigated changes in the spatial distribution of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in Lake Peipsi using limnological data from 1970 to 2005. The results show differences in nutrient content between the northern and southern parts of the lake (polarity) and indicate possible causes of eutrophication of this large international lake. The results show a steady gradient in total P (TP) and total N (TN) content along the lake: the northern and deepest part, Lake Peipsi s.s., is significantly less loaded with nutrients than the southern and very shallow part, Lake Pihkva, into which the main inflow, the Velikaya River, discharges. However, the long-term temporal patterns of N and P polarity are different. Statistical analysis, using a parametric functions technique in the framework of general linear analysis provided by the SAS procedures GLM and MIXED, revealed that the polarity of N compounds has been relatively stable over the years and can be related to differences in natural conditions between different parts of the lake. Our study indicates that Lake Peipsi is quite resistant to year-to-year changes in N load, and the in-lake N concentrations are quite stable on a long-term scale. In contrast, the increasing difference in P concentrations between the northern and southern parts of the lake clearly shows that the input of P from the south is increasing. Our results confirm that the anthropogenic input of P is the main reason for the deterioration of the Lake Peipsi ecosystem.  相似文献

Lakes in Europe have a bipolar distribution by latitude with higher lake densities in the north (58–65° N) and south (38–48° N). By area, 95% of the large lakes (>100 km2) are located at altitudes lower than 100 m above sea level (ASL) and only 1% lie higher than 1,000 m ASL. Physically large lakes exhibit several similarities to seas and oceans in their thermal structure and circulation dynamics. From the chemical point of view, lakes are important accumulation sites for substances transported from the watershed or built up in the lake itself but they may contribute positively to global greenhouse gas emission. Fauna and flora of ancient large lakes such as the Caspian Sea and Lake Ohrid include large numbers of endemic species, which become endangered if conditions change because of direct human impact, alien species invasions or climate change. Large lakes offer a wide range of ecosystem services to society, the multiple use of which creates multiple pressures on these water bodies such as nutrient load and toxic pollution, modification of hydrology and shore line structure, and shifting of the food web balance by stocking or harvesting various species. Although large lakes are among the best-studied ecosystems in the world, the application to them of environmental regulations such as the European Water Framework Directive is a challenging task and requires that several natural and management aspects specific to these water bodies are adequately considered.  相似文献
