The cytopharyngeal basket of Pseudomicrothorax dubius is used to ingest filamentous blue-green algae. The basket has three main components: a sheath of microfilaments, bundles of microtubules (the nemadesmata), and ribbons of microtubules. The ribbons of microtubules (nemadesmal lamellae) are adpressed to the food vacuole during ingestion. Cytochemical techniques show that both the lamellae and the microfilamentous sheath possess ATPase activity, but the reaction product appears under different conditions in the two cases. The presence of ATPase activity within the microtubular lattices of the feeding organelle suggests the capacity for active motility. Consequently the basket seems to have two motile systems, one may be used to constrict and dilate the cytopharynx while the other is used in the inward propulsion of the forming food vacuole. 相似文献

Stomatogenesis during metamorphosis of the marine loricate ciliate, Eufolliculina uhligi, was observed by transmission electron microscopy. Kinetosome proliferation in the stomatogenic territory leads to the formation of an anarchic field. This separates into the left adoral and the right paroral primordia. Both primordia consist of pairs of kinetosomes. One kinetosome of a pair is associated with one transverse and two postciliary microtubules; the other has one transverse microtubule. The postciliary microtubules of the adoral kinetosomes become divergent; those of the paroral kinetosomes become convergent. The adoral kinetosomes arrange in promembranelles. Then a third row of kinetosomes is produced anteriorly to each promembranelle. This third row is short at the peristome but longer in the buccal area. The paroral kinetosomes form a stichodyad. The buccal part of the paroral primordium is resorbed during formation of the buccal cavity. Stomatogenesis ends with the development of a functioning cytostome. During this process, the postciliary microtubules of the buccal adoral membranelles elongate and become associated with cytopharyngeal vesicles. ABSTRACT. The nuclear apparatus of H. vermiculare consists of a single moniliform macronucleus and about 25 micronuclei. the micronuclei are about 3 μm in diameter and characterized by a meshwork of thick condensed chromatin. Mitosis is intranuclear and acentric as in all other ciliates. In metaphase, interpolar and chromosomal microtubules are abundant and the length of the micronuclei increases to about 5 μm. In late anaphase, interzonal microtubules become prominent and the spindle elongates to about 50 μ. In meta- and anaphase, the microtubules of the spindle are attached to the polar vesicles, and in anaphase, chromosomes become attached to it. In contrast to most other eukaryotes, micronuclear mitosis is not strictly bound to cell division in H. vermiculare. While most of the micronuclei divide prior to cytokinesis, others retain their interphasic shape or degenerate. In addition, some micronuclei divide in the interdivision period, i.e. between two successive divisions of the cell and macronucleus. Mating cells of H. vermiculare become joined to each other in the cilia-free region covering the cytostome. In the course of conjugation, the cell membranes and the underlying oral filamentous sheaths of both cells fuse, thus uniting the endoplasm of both cells in the mouth region. ABSTRACT Stephanonympha nelumbium is a large trichomonad measuring 45–60 μm in length and 20–40 μm in width. It is a member of the multinucleate and multiflagellate family Calonymphidae. While the numerous flagella arise in groups of four at the anterior cell pole, the posterior body portion is covered with attached spirochetes and rod-like bacteria. Generally, in the apical body portion of S. nelumbium , 50–100 nuclei are arranged in five to seven circular rows. Each nucleus is associated with a typical mastigont system, comprised of three anterior flagella, one recurrent flagellum being attached to the cell surface for a certain distance, and several typical root structures. Akaryomastigonts and costas do not occur. The fine structure of S. nelumbium corresponds with that of other calonymphids. The main difference to Calonympha is that the axostyle does not embrace the nucleus but passes it in form of a flattened rod. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. When Paramecium tetraurelia expresses the D serotype, detectable by serum tests, high molecular mRNA could be isolated, which corresponds to the molecular mass of the D surface protein. Using this D specific mRNA as a probe for screenings in different genomic libraries a subfamily of five very similar genes was found, named α-51D, γ1 -51D, γ2 -51D, δ-51D and ε-51D. Each of them is about 8-kb long, they show regions of identity to each other, and there is no evidence that any are defective genes or pseudogenes. Up to now serotype D is the only known serotype showing this phenomenon. Another novel feature is that two of the D isogenes are closely linked. The sequence for the entire coding region of the α-51D gene has been determined, as well as the upstream and downstream noncoding regions. Its deduced amino acid sequence shows the same characteristic cysteine periodicity displayed by all other immobilization antigen (i-ag) genes from Paramecium. However, in contrast to most other such genes, tandem repeats are missing from the 7599-bp long coding region of the α-51D gene. When the sequences of the type 51D genes are compared to each other, the similarity is very high and extends to coding as well as to noncoding regions. Similarity within noncoding regions is usually only observed for allelic i-ag genes. We conclude that the type D genes constitute a family of isogenes that are nonallelic. Phosphatic microfossils etched from Upper Cambrian (Trempealeauan Stage) Limestones of the Whipple Cave Formation, Nevada, and other contemporaneous formations in western North America, are colonies, the individuals of which are arranged irregularly around one or more nuclei. No secondary growth has occurred. During their lifetime, however, the individuals partially filled their chambers with phosphatic matter. The highly differentiated morphology of the colonies is strikingly similar to the living ascidian tunicate Botryllus. Ecological conditions and size range of the fossils are likewise similar to those of the Ascidiacea. If recognized as an ascidian, Palaeobotryllus taylori n.g., n.sp. extends the known occurrence of Tunicata into the Upper Cambrian. 相似文献

The display of the two distinct intermediate filament proteins, desmin and vimentin, in rat vascular smooth muscle tissue was studied by immunofluorescence microscopy on frozen sections of aorta and other blood vessels. Vascular smooth muscle cells present in these vessels always appeared rich in vimentin. However, staining of sections covering six distinct but contiguous parts of the aorta showed that the number of desmin containing cells was low distal to the truncus brachiocephalicus, but increases until in distal parts of the aorta and in the arteria iliaca communis almost all cells appear positive for desmin. Thus blood vessels show heterogeneity of intermediate filament expression not only in cross-section but can also display heterogeneity along their length. Muscular arteries such as the renal artery and the arteria femoralis, as well as arterioles and veins including the vena jugularis and the vena cava also contain desmin. Thus it may be that low numbers of desmin-positive cells are typical of elastic arteries, while muscular arteries and other blood vessels are characterized by large numbers of desmin-positive cells. We discuss whether desmin-positive and desmin-negative vascular smooth muscle cells may perform different functions and raise the possibility that desmin expression may coincide with the turn on of a specially regulated contractility program. 相似文献

Evolutionary "old" nervous systems such as those of coelenteratesare peptidergic: Using various radioimmunoassays we have nowisolated 13 novel neuropeptides from sea anemones and severalothers from hydrozoan polyps and medusae. These peptides areall structurally related and contain the C-terminal sequenceArg-X-NH2 or Lys-X-NH2, where X is Ala, Asn, Ile, Phe, Pro orTrp. Three neuropeptides have a novel N-terminal L-3-phenyllactylresidue, which protects against degradation by nonspecific aminopeptidases.The neuropeptides from sea anemones are produced by differentsets of neurones and have excitatory or inhibitory actions onisolated muscle preparations, suggesting that they are neurotransmittersor neuromodulators. We have also cloned the precursor proteinfor the sea-anemone neuropeptide Antho-RFamide (<Glu-Gly-Arg-Phe-NH2).In Calliactis parasitica this precursor harbours 19 copies ofimmature Antho-RFamide (Gln-Gly-Arg-Phe-Gly) together with 7other, putative neuropeptide sequences. The precursor of Anthopleuraelegantissima contains 14 copies of Antho-RFamide and 19 other,putative neuropeptides. This shows that the biosynthetic machineryfor neuropeptides in coelenterates, the lowest animal grouphaving a nervous system, is already very efficient and similarto that of higher invertebrates, such as molluscs and insects,and vertebrates. 相似文献
