SUMMARY. 1. Mature crayfish, collected from an Irish lake before breeding had started, were held in breeding combinations and their mating and brooding activities observed.
2. All mating attempts were initiated by the male. A single mating led to spawning within 6 days but a subsequent mating cancelled the effects of the first. Males mated more often when there were more females present. Males lacking a major cheliped mated less often than did normal males.
3. Larger males mated more often than did smaller males, and although males showed no female size preference, matings were less frequent and generally unsuccessful when males were much larger than females; the female was usually killed. Large females mated successfully with smaller males.
4. Females held at high densities with a larger male mated earlier than at low densities. However, aggression also increased with density; at high densities males fought and killed females.
5. Males held in pairs without females fought; in occasional mating attempts spermatophores were not positioned correctly. Paired females rarely fought; all spawned normally although unmated. Although their eggs soon died and were removed during grooming, brooding behaviour continued for at least 2 months.
6. Brooding females held in pairs shed pleopodal eggs during aggressive encounters. Females held singly showed a lower initial rate of egg loss.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Up to five zones of acid phosphatase activity appear in gels after electrophoresis of detergent-treated extracts from 13 of the 14 species of the Paramecium aurelia complex. The overall pattern is somewhat similar for all species: differences in intensity and mobility of individual zones permit the grouping of these sibling species into eight groups. All 14 species can be identified using the procedure of enzyme electrophoresis, although two of them are more similar than is usually the case. Problems of misclassification are discussed in terms of the nature and frequency of variants. With the judicious choice of enzymes used to screen new stocks, these problems can be circumvented. Species relationships are updated using 11 enzymes. A dendrogram constructed from the matrix of genetic distances shows four clusters of species: (i) P. biaurelia, P. triaurelia; (ii) P. primaurelia, P. pentaurelia, P. sexaurelia, P. novaurelia; (iii) P. septaurelia, P. undecaurelia, P. tredecaurelia, P. quadecaurelia; and (iv) P. tetraurelia, P. octaurelia, P. decaurelia, P. dodecaurelia. Distances between the species are large, on the order of the differences between Drosophila species. The species are characterized by an extraordinary lack of geographical differentiation and great morphological similarity, which contrasts strongly with the molecular differentiation.  相似文献

Changes in the major alcohol-soluble, low molecular weight carbohydratesof P. purpurea, O--D-galactopyranosyl-(1-2)-glycerol (‘floridoside’)and O--D-galactopyranosyl-(1-1)-glycerol (‘isofloridoside’),have been examined in response to salinity variation. ‘Floridoside’is shown to vary in absolute amount, increasing in hypersalineand decreasing in hyposaline media. ‘Isofloridoside’content per cell does not change in a similar manner. Responsesare almost identical under light or dark conditions, ‘floridoside’changes being complete within 24 h. Decreasing the externalwater potential using ionic and non-ionic solutes has the sameeffect upon galactosyl-glycerol content. The amount of ‘floridoside’synthesized, and degraded under hypersaline and hyposaline conditionsrespectively is shown to be insufficient to restore cell volumeto its original value. It is therefore suggested that the primaryfunction of ‘floridoside’ increases in concentratedsea-waters is that of a compatible solute, serving to protectthe cell during periods when the external salt content is increaseddramatically.  相似文献

The new stick insect family Gallophasmatidae, based on Gallophasma longipalpis gen. et sp.n. , from the Earliest Eocene French amber has a pattern of tegmina venation typical of Archaeorthoptera, also present in at least some Mesozoic ‘Phasmatodea’. On the other hand, Gallophasma displays in its body anatomy some apomorphies of the extant Euphasmatodea, e.g. fusion of metatergum and abdominal tergum 1, correlated with the reduction of abdominal sternum 1 to lateral triangular sclerites. A unique autapomorphy of Gallophasma is the presence of annulated and apparently multi‐segmented or pseudo‐segmented cerci; all other Phasmatodea have one‐segmented cerci. The venation of the tegmina of Gallophasma differs from that of extant winged Phasmatodea in the plesiomorphic absence of a knob‐like dorsal eversion. This and other differences in the wing venation between extant and extinct Phasmatodea might have been caused by the loss of wings at some point in the evolutionary history of the order and their secondary gain in a subclade of the extant phasmids.  相似文献

Mitotic or meiotic chromosome numbers for 42 accessions belonging to 39 species of different genera of Asteraceae were determined. First chromosome counts are reported for one genus ( Gymnocoronis ), 14 species, and one variety. These are as follows: Solidago chilensis var. megapotamica (2 n  = 2 x  = 18), Chromolaena barbacensis (2 n  = 3 x  = 30), Chromolaena christieana (2 n  = 3 x  = 30), Chromolaena hirsuta (2 n  = 4 x  = 40), Chromolaena verbenacea ( n  = 20 II, 2 n  = 4 x  = 40), Disynaphia multicrenulata (2 n  = 2 x  = 20), Gymnocoronis spilanthoides var. subcordata (2 n  = 2 x  = 20), Mikania thapsoides (2 n  = 4 x  = 68), Stevia commixta (2 n  = 2 x  = 22), Porophyllum brevifolium (2 n  = 4 x  = 44), Viguiera rojasii (2 n  = 2 x  = 34), Pterocaulon angustifolium (2 n  = 2 x  = 20), Gochnatia haumaniana (2 n  = 4 x  = 44), Senecio ostenii (2 n  = 4 x  = 40), Senecio pinnatus (2 n  = 8 x  = 80), and Lepidaploa amambaia (2 n  = 2 x  = 28). Chromosome numbers differing from those reported previously in the literature were found in Campuloclinium macrocephalum (2 n  = 2 x  = 20), Melanthera latifolia (2 n  = 4 x  = 60), Chrysolaena flexuosa (2 n  = 2 x  = 20), and Cyrtocymura cincta (2 n  = 4 x  = 40). Fire is an important process in many ecosystems, but inappropriate fire regimes can adversely affect biodiversity. We identified a naturally flammable heathy woodland ecosystem where the use of planned fire had increased the extent of older vegetation, and quantified the abundance of two small native mammals in this landscape (silky mouse Pseudomys apodemoides and heath rat P. shortridgei). We defined four time‐since‐fire (TSF) categories representing a 2‐ to 55‐year post‐fire sequence and, on the basis of a habitat accommodation model, predicted that both species would select younger age‐classes over older ones. We also predicted that (i) much of the variance in vegetation structure would remain unexplained by TSF and (ii) statistical models of mammal abundance and occupancy including structural variables as predictors would be better than models including TSF. Pseudomys apodemoides selected 17‐ to 23‐year‐old sites, while there was no evidence that P. shortridgei selected a particular TSF category, findings that were inconsistent with our predictions. In line with our predictions, relatively large portions of the variance in vegetation structure remained unexplained by TSF (adjustedr2 for four structural variables: 0.24, 0.29, 0.35 and 0.57), and in three of four cases there was strong evidence that statistical models of mammal abundance and occupancy including structural variables were better than those including TSF. At the site scale (hectares), P. shortridgei abundance was positively related to the cover of dead material at the base of Xanthorrhoea plants and at the trap scale (metres), the trapability of both species was significantly related to vegetation volume at 0–20 cm. Our findings suggest that TSF may not be a good proxy for either vegetation structure or species abundance/occupancy.  相似文献

The small modern insect order Grylloblattida has an abundant fossil record during the Late Palaeozoic and the Mesozoicirca. The relationships between these fossil taxa and the modern grylloblattids remain unclear because most of them are based on isolated wings or have poorly preserved body features. Modern grylloblattids are wingless insects. The new grylloblattid family Plesioblattogryllidae fam. nov. is erected for the new genus and species Plesioblattogryllus magnificus gen. nov., sp. nov. , from the Middle Jurassic of north-eastern China. The well-preserved specimen provides further evidence that could support its close relationships with the modern grylloblattids: (1) several very similar head structures, e.g. developed laciniae with inner row of setae, maxillary palps segmented into five, labial palps segmented into three, large labrum, and morphology of antenna; (2) paired eoplantulae on tarsomeres 1–4; (3) long ovipositor and large eggs comparable with those of modern taxa. The new genus has strongly developed mandibles with sharp pointed apical teeth and strong marginal teeth, and strong hook-like fore claws with basal teeth, suggesting it was carnivorous. The major differences between the extinct and extant Grylloblattida, such as the lack of wings, the eyes and ocelli either degenerated or absent, and the thorax degenerated in the modern forms, are probably related to their adaptation to their life under rocks and rock-crawler habits.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 17–24.  相似文献
