The paucity of sinistral (left-coiling) relative to dextral (right-coiling) species of gastropods in the marine realm is an enigma. In Conus , one of the most diverse marine animal genera, sinistral shell coiling has evolved as a species-wide character only once. Fossils of this species, Conus adversarius , are found in Upper Pliocene and lowermost Pleistocene deposits in the southeastern USA. Conus adversarius had nonplanktonic larval development; this may have been a critical factor for the early establishment of the species, as well as sinistral marine species in other clades. Notably, most specimens of aberrantly sinistral modern Conus are derived from typically dextral species that have nonplanktonic development. If C. adversarius was reproductively isolated from dextral conspecifics, then this species may provide an example of nearly instantaneous sympatric speciation in the fossil record. Furthermore, the common and widespread – while geologically short-lived – fossil shells of C. adversarius show large amounts of variability in form and this variation may be related, at least in part, to a pleiotropic effect associated with the reversed coiling direction of this species.  相似文献

Abstract: Fossils of dyrosaurid crocodyliforms are limited in South America, with only three previously diagnosed taxa including the short‐snouted Cerrejonisuchus improcerus from the Paleocene Cerrejón Formation of north‐eastern Colombia. Here we describe a second dyrosaurid from the Cerrejón Formation, Acherontisuchus guajiraensis gen. et sp. nov., based on three partial mandibles, maxillary fragments, teeth, and referred postcrania. The mandible has a reduced seventh alveolus and laterally depressed retroarticular process, both diagnostic characteristics of Dyrosauridae. Acherontisuchus guajiraensis is distinct among known dyrosaurids in having a unique combination of craniomandibular characteristics, and postcranial morphology that suggests it may have occupied a more placid, fluvial habitat than most known Old‐World dyrosaurids. Results from a cladistic analysis of Dyrosauridae, using 82 primarily cranial and mandibular characters, support an unresolved relationship between A. guajiraensis and a combination of New‐ and Old‐World dyrosaurids including Hyposaurus rogersii, Congosaurus bequaerti, Atlantosuchus coupatezi, Guarinisuchus munizi, Rhabdognathus keiniensis and Rhabdognathus aslerensis. Our results are consistent with an African origin for Dyrosauridae with multiple dispersals into the New World during the Late Cretaceous and a transition from marine habitats in ancestral taxa to more fluvial habitats in more derived taxa.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The tnierodistribution of Gammarus species is size assortative: larger animals are associated with larger substrate particles. Using an artificial stream with scrubbed substrate we investigate the hypothesis that the assortative mechanism is stimulated by current avoidance rather than food searching.
2. In uniformly mixed substrate, G. pulex tend to move upstream, but in patchy substrate they are found in a predictable substrate grade. There is no discrimination between patches by different size classes of G. pulex in static water. The size assortative field pattern can only be reproduced under flow conditions in the laboratory. It occurs in the absence of food and irrespective of the sequence or location of substrate patches.
3. As density increases, G. pulex are displaced from the optimal patches but move into the open stream rather than into the cover of alternative patch types.
4. We discuss the significance of these results and suggest that some earlier models explaining mechanisms for microdistribution patterns tnay have been unnecessarily complex. Contrasts between natural and simulated stream situations and their experimental advantages are noted.  相似文献

Hilton, J. R. and Thomas, J. A. 1987. Changes in respiratorypotential of dormant and non-dormant Galium aparine L. (cleavers)seeds during dry storage.—J. exp. Bot. 38: 1484–1490. Pre-germinative rates of O2 uptake of two collections of Galiumaparine L. seed were compared throughout a 9 month period ofdry storage at 4 °C, 23 °C and at ambient (frost-protected)temperatures. Uptake of O2 by the dormant seeds was generallyhigher than that of the less dormant seeds except when freshly-harvested.Moreover, changes in the O2 consumption of seeds stored at ambienttemperatures could be associated with periods of germinationand seedling emergence in the field. The results are discussedin relation to changes in respiratory metabolism during dormancybreakage.  相似文献

A survey of 35 species indicates that monitor lizards (Varanus) typically hunt over large areas, search in particular microhabitats, and feed frequently on a wide variety of prey, many of which are relatively small. There is ontogenetic, seasonal, and geographic variation in diet. With some exceptions, invertebrates are the predominant prey, but rare predation on vertebrates is often energetically significant. A few monitors specialize on prey types that occur as occasional items in the diet of species with more generalized diets; these include crabs, snails, orthopterans, lizards, and large mammals. For most species, prey specialization occurs via habitat selection and a variety of prey types and sizes are eaten, as expected for widely searching predators. Comparisons with other anguimorphans suggest that derived features of Varanus are associated with high body temperature and activity levels; specialized chemoreception; and rapid, skillful capture of hidden and/or potentially hard to catch prey. Occasional ingestion of moderately large prey is primitive for Varanoidca (Helodermatidae +Varanidae), accentuating a trend that is perhaps primitive for anguimorphan lizards. Reduction of very large prey prior to ingestion is a derived attribute within Varanus , seen infrequently in several larger species and commonly in V. komodoensis. This study illustrates the synthesis of comparative natural history in a phylogenetic context, a method that addresses the history of organismal change.  相似文献

Guard cell and epidermal/subsidiary cell protoplasts obtainedby enzymic digestion of peeled Commelina communis leaf epidermiswere separated and purified by discontinuous density gradientccntrifugation with media based on Percoll (Pharmacia Fine ChemicalsAB, Uppsala, Sweden). The cell types were recovered over 99.9%pure at yields exceeding 50% efficiency, and mesophyll contaminationcould be virtually eliminated when desired. Osmotic characteristicsof the protoplast types were evaluated and compared to in vivovalues, and the viability of the protoplasts, assessed usinga range of criteria, was found to be high. Purified Commelinaguard cell protoplasts were able to evolve O2 when illuminated, and this was substantially reduced in the presence of the inhibitorDCMU, indicating that they possess photosystem II activity.Specific advantages of this method of protoplast purification, and the potential uses of separate suspensions of guard cellsand epidermal/subsidiary cells in experiments on stomatal physiologyare discussed. Mapping the Microenvironment for Seed Germination in the Field   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Gaps in the canopy have a major influence upon the microenvironmentfor seed germination in natural vegetation. Two methods formeasuring gaps in grasslands are described. The first uses afield-portable instrument for mapping R/IR ratios under thecanopy, and the second employs infrared photography and imageanalysis to measure gaps from above. The methods are illustratedwith results from an experiment in which grazing sheep are theprinciple influence upon the structure of the grass canopy. Results of both methods show that the effects of current andpast grazing regimes may be detected in the canopy structureof the grassland. Seeds of Geranium dissection sown into gapsof different sizes showed greater establishment in small gaps(1–2 cm2) than under a closed canopy Canopy gap, germination, grassland, grazing, Geranium dissectum  相似文献
