Abstract— Objections to my earlier demonstration, that the branch lengths of trees fitted to distance matrices have no physical interpretation, are shown to be ill-founded. In particular the contention of Felsenstein, that fitted lengths estimate expectations of amounts of change, is shown to lead to a paradox. A method is introduced for constructing multiple trees of optimal or near-optimal fit to distance data, and this is found to give better performance than previous methods. Most published trees based on distances have been poorly chosen. Consensus trees of several trees with near-optimal fit are found to be quite poorly resolved, and it appears that molecular distances seldom provide much useful information on phylogenetic relationships. 相似文献

Germ Cell Nuclear Factor (GCNF) is an orphan member of the nuclearreceptor gene superfamily. Much has been understood about thefunctioning of GCNF which represents a candidate receptor fora novel hormonal signalling pathway. GCNF is not closely relatedto other members of the nuclear receptor superfamily and formsits own branch within the superfamily tree. It has a uniqueexpression pattern that spans both embryonic and adult stagesof development. In the adult, it is expressed in the germ cells:oocytes and spermatogenic cells as well as specific neuronalcells within the brain. In the embryo, GCNF expression is turnedon after gastrulation in all germ layers the ectoderm, mesodermand endoderm. An antero-posterior gradient of GCNF is establishedin the neuroectoderm of the embryo, suggesting a role in regulationof neuronal and germ cell development. Regulation of physiologicalprocesses by a nuclear receptor is achieved through regulationof gene expression. GCNF is the only nuclear receptor to specifcallybind to DR0 hormone response elements to regulate gene expression.In the absense of a ligand, GCNF represses gene expression.GCNF is capable of regulating the expression of the protaminegenes in a response element-dependent manner. At present theligand for GCNF is unknown, but it is hypothesized that GCNFis a receptor for a novel hormonal signalling pathway that effectsits biological response by regulating the expression of a subsetof genes containing DR0 response elements. 相似文献

The euryhaline unicellular green alga Dunaliella tertiolectalost intracellular glycerol when subjected to a decrease inexternal salinity. After the salinity was decreased, photosynthesiswas inhibited for at least the first 100 min, but dark oxygenuptake was transiently stimulated. The extent of the 519 nmfield-indicating absorption change induced by photosystem Ialone was inhibited by decreasing the salinity, but other photosyntheticparameters were largely unaffected. A comparison of these resultswith hypertonic stress indicated that although both stressesinhibit the overall process of photosynthesis, they do so bydifferent mechanisms. Abstract. Growth rates throughout an organ curving phototropically under continuous, unilateral while light were monitored by lime-lapse photography of cress hypocotyls marked into 1 mm sections by two rows of ion-exchange beads. Curvature resulted from an integrated sequence of changes in growth rate on each side of the organ, but the actual patterns of change and, therefore rales of curvature, differed within even this one species, depending upon the immediate pretreatment of the seedlings. Transference of seedlings from darkness to unilateral irradiation gave immediate growth inhibition on both sides of the organ. Curvature resulted from differential recovery of growth rate, being seen first on the shaded side, most prominently in the apical regions; only 2h after initial exposure to light did growth recover on the lit (lower) side. On the other hand, transfer of seedlings from omnilateral to unilateral irradiation of the same intensity resulted in simultaneous growth inhibition on the irradiated side and stimulated growth on the shaded side: this growth stimulation of the shaded side was greater than occurred in totally darkened control plants. 相似文献

Asymmetric cell division in Caulobacter crescentus produces two cell types, a stalked cell and a new swarmer cell, with characteristics surface structures. We have examined the role of the cell cycle in the differentiation of these two cells using the adsorption of bacteriophage øLC72, the assembly of the polar flagellum, and stalk formation as assays for changes in surface morphology. Previous studies of this aquatic bacterium [17, 25] have suggested that the replicating chromosome acts as a 'clock' in timing the formation of the flagellar filament at one pole of the new swarmer cell. The analysis of conditional cell cycle mutants presented here extends these results by showing that DNA synthesis is also required for adsorption of phage øLC72 and, more importantly, they also suggest that a late cell division step is involved in determining the spatial pattern in which the phage receptors and flagella are assembled. We propose that this cell division step is required for formation of 'organizational' centers which direct the assembly of surface structures at the new cell poles, and for the polarity reversal in assembly that accompanies swarmer cell to stalked cell development. 相似文献

Shell shape and growth of two unionacean species, Villosa villosaand Elliptio icterina, are analyzed with univariate and multivariatetechniques. The relationship of shape variables to size variablesis examined. Under the lognormal assumption, parametric testsof these allometric relationships are valid. Variables describingthe ventro-posterior region of the shell are shown to be thebest of those tested for discriminating between the sexes ofboth species regardless of statistical method. Neither speciesexhibits size sexual dimorphism. Shape sexual dimorphism ofV. villosa is constant during adult growth, but the more subtledimorphism of E. icterina changes as adults continue to grow. Abstract. Phylogenetic relationships of the subfamilies and tribes of the Vespoidea (= Diploptera) are investigated using cladistic methods. A natural classification is proposed, sequencing seven tribes in six subfamilies within the single family Vespidae. Euparagia is the sister-group of the rest of the Vespidae. The Gayellinae and Masarinae are sister-groups, and are reduced in rank to tribes within the subfamily Masarinae. This is the sister-group of the Eumeninae + Stenogastrinae + Polistinae + Vespinae. The Zethinae is a paraphyletic group; both it and the Raphiglossinae are deleted and included in the Eumeninae. The Stenogastrinae is regarded as the sister-group of the Vespinae + Polistinae. 相似文献
