The circadian behavior of the desert iguana, Dipsosaurus dorsalis, was investigated on the basis of behavioral observation and electrophysiological recording. D. dorsalis adequately complies with accepted criteria for both behavioral sleep and paradoxical sleep. At 20 degrees C, 12% of the photophase is spent in sleep, 95% of the scotophase is spent in sleep. Paradoxical sleep occurs at all times of the year, but only at temperatures of 20 and 30 degrees C. Amounts of behavioral sleep are affected by both temperature and time of year. Total sleep increases with decreased day length and decreased temperature. Daytime sleep increases with decreased temperature.  相似文献

Summary Intravenous injections into nude mice of 5 mg/kg methotrexate (MTX) linked to the antibody to human high molecular weight-melanoma associated antigen (HMW-MAA), monoclonal antibody (mAb) 225.28, an IgG2a, on days 1, 4, 7, 10 and 14, starting 24 h after subcutaneous inoculation of 2 × 106 cultured human M21 melanoma cells inhibited mean tumor volume by 90% on day 14 and by 65% on day 50 after the beginning of the treatment. Injections of equimolar amounts of free MTX and MTX linked to normal mouse IgG or to an isotypematched myeloma protein did not inhibit tumor growth significantly. MTX linked to mAb 225.28 did not inhibit the xenograft of a subline of human melanoma cell line M21 without detectable expression of HMW-MAA. In a clonogenic assay, the MTX-225.28 conjugate was three times more potent in inhibiting the growth of M21 melanoma cells than free MTX, but did not inhibit the growth of kidney carcinoma cells Caki-1, which do not express high-M r MAA. In contrast, MTX linked to the mAb DAL K29, reacting with kidney carcinoma cells Caki-1, inhibited their growth but did not affect that of melanoma cells. M21 melanoma cells isolated from the residual tumor of a mouse treated with the MTX-225.28 conjugate did not differ in their reactivity with mAb 225.28 and in their sensitivity to MTX when compared with M21 cells from an untreated mouse.  相似文献

Summary Larvae of Euphausia superba in the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic in March 1984 averaged 580 per 1000 m3 of water. This is 100 times less than we observed in March 1981, but more than the average of 250 larvae per 1000 m3 found in January–February 1981. There was one 1984 high-abundance sample, accounting for 85% of all larvae caught, from the eastern area of confluence of Drake Passage and Weddell Sea waters. Abundances in 1984 near the South Shetland Islands were commonly 5 to 10 larvae per 1000 m3, and younger by 2 to 4 developmental stages than in March 1981. Body lengths of given stages were generally less in 1984 than in 1981. Advanced furcilia stages, particularly, in the 1984 samples tended to be smaller than the same stages in March 1981, indicating relatively poor growth during February 1984. However, the 1984 younger larvae (calyptopes and the developmental forms of furcilia stages 1 and 2) indicated that, in 1984, recent (March) growth had been good — probably better than in February. Dierct observation of the development of calyptopis stage 3 to furcilia stage yielded a development time of 7.7 days, which compares favorably to the 8-day period estimated from field samples. Reduced food availability did not affect the development rate nor give rise to a clearly higher incidence of indirect pathways of development. It is postulated that recruitment was about of month later in 1984 than in 1981 in most of the area studied and was probably going to be less successful.  相似文献

Abstract. Multivariate analysis of an extensive palyno-logical database for Europe has enabled reconstruction of broad-scale vegetation history. Whereas many major features of present vegetation patterns were established early in the Holocene, floristic composition of the forests has changed continuously up to the present day. For example, although ‘mixed deciduous forests’ had reached approximately their present extent in northwest Europe by 8000 B.P., Tilia peaked in abundance in these forests during the middle post glacial, whereas Pinus was most abundant in these forests during the early post-glacial and Fagus increased in abundance only in recent millennia. Pollen-climate response surfaces for major pollen taxa show how their distribution and abundance patterns relate to contemporary climate. Past forest-compositional changes were responses to climatic changes, the nature of which can be inferred from pollen-climate response surfaces. Post-glacial climate changes have been different in magnitude and direction in different regions of Europe. For example, in recent millennia the vegetation changes indicate decreasing summer temperatures in northern Europe but increasing summer temperatures in the Mediterranean region. The way in which vegetation responded to past climatic changes gives insight into the likely response of vegetation to future climate changes induced by the ‘greenhouse effect’.  相似文献

Mutant v-erbB products of avian c-erbB1 have previously been used to correlate structural domains of the receptor encoded by this proto-oncogene with tissue-specific transformation potential. In these studies, deletion of the ligand-binding domain of the receptor has been shown to be required for transformation of erythroblasts, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells. It has, therefore, been postulated that deletion of this domain results in an allosteric change in the receptor analogous to the ligand-bound state of the epidermal growth factor receptor; i.e., it induces a receptor conformation that is constitutively active with respect to mitogenic signaling. While oncogenic v-erbB products have been shown to be expressed on the cell surface of both fibroblasts and erythroblasts, no comprehensive analysis of the oligomeric potential of these products has been conducted. Since the first event known to follow epidermal growth factor binding to its receptor is oligomerization, and receptor dimerization has been correlated with mitogenic signaling, we have carefully analyzed the ability of several v-erbB products to oligomerize in the three target cell types transformed by these oncogenes. In this report, we demonstrate the v-erbB products can efficiently homodimerize in all three target tissues, that this dimerization is ligand independent and occurs at the cell surface, and that there is no apparent correlation between v-erbB dimerization and transformation of avian fibroblasts. Furthermore, both oncogenic and nononcogenic v-erbB products can heterodimerize with the native c-erbB1 product in chicken embryo fibroblasts, suggesting that heterodimerization between v-erB and native c-erbB1 is not sufficient to result in c-erbB1-mediated sarcomagenesis.  相似文献

We forecasted potential impacts of climate change on the ability of a network of key sites for bird conservation (Important Bird Areas; IBAs) to provide suitable climate for 370 bird species of current conservation concern in two Asian biodiversity hotspots: the Eastern Himalaya and Lower Mekong. Comparable studies have largely not accounted for uncertainty, which may lead to inappropriate conclusions. We quantified the contribution of four sources of variation (choice of general circulation models, emission scenarios and species distribution modelling methods and variation in species distribution data) to uncertainty in forecasts and tested if our projections were robust to these uncertainties. Declines in the availability of suitable climate within the IBA network by 2100 were forecast as ‘extremely likely’ for 45% of species, whereas increases were projected for only 2%. Thus, we predict almost 24 times as many ‘losers’ as ‘winners’. However, for no species was suitable climate ‘extremely likely’ to be completely lost from the network. Considerable turnover (median = 43%, 95% CI = 35–69%) in species compositions of most IBAs were projected by 2100. Climatic conditions in 47% of IBAs were projected as ‘extremely likely’ to become suitable for fewer priority species. However, no IBA was forecast to become suitable for more species. Variation among General Circulation Models and Species Distribution Models contributed most to uncertainty among forecasts. This uncertainty precluded firm conclusions for 53% of species and IBAs because 95% confidence intervals included projections of no change. Considering this uncertainty, however, allows robust recommendations concerning the remaining species and IBAs. Overall, while the IBA network will continue to sustain bird conservation, climate change will modify which species each site will be suitable for. Thus, adaptive management of the network, including modified site conservation strategies and facilitating species' movement among sites, is critical to ensure effective future conservation.  相似文献

The Riverine Barriers Hypothesis (RBH) posits that tropical rivers can be effective barriers to gene flow, based on observations that range boundaries often coincide with river barriers. Over the last 160 years, the RBH has received attention from various perspectives, with a particular focus on vertebrates in the Amazon Basin. To our knowledge, no molecular assessment of the RBH has been conducted on birds in the Afrotropics, despite its rich avifauna and many Afrotropical bird species being widely distributed across numerous watersheds and basins. Here, we provide the first genetic evidence that an Afrotropical river has served as a barrier for birds and for their lice, based on four understory bird species collected from sites north and south of the Congo River. Our results indicate near‐contemporaneous, Pleistocene lineage diversification across the Congo River in these species. Our results further indicate differing levels of genetic variation in bird lice; the extent of this variation appears linked to the life‐history of both the host and the louse. Extensive cryptic diversity likely is being harbored in Afrotropical forests, in both understory birds and their lice. Therefore, these forests may not be “museums” of old lineages. Rather, substantial evolutionary diversification may have occurred in Afrotropical forests throughout the Pleistocene, supporting the Pleistocene Forest Refuge Hypothesis. Strong genetic variation in birds and their lice within a small part of the Congo Basin forest indicates that we may have grossly underestimated diversity in the Afrotropics, making these forests home of substantial biodiversity in need of conservation.  相似文献
