An SEM study of the surface morphology of the major stages of mature and developing teeth of the leopard frog was made using anorganic preparations of the teeth and jaws. After initial development, the crown area changed little during subsequent tooth eruption, ankylosis and maturation. The thin enamel covering extended further down the shaft than expected. After ankylosis, the surfaces of the tooth continued to mature. The unmineralized gap between the crown and the pedestal, which is prominent in most amphibians, gradually filled in as the ankylosed tooth aged. The upper portion of the pedestal initially formed a dentine surface which was globular in appearance due to partial calcification of the surface collagen fibres but became smooth with uniformly calcified fibres as the ankylosed tooth matured. The lower portion of the pedestal was more variable and there was a gradual transition of dentine into a more cellular, bone-like tissue which contained lacunae and larger fibre bundles. This bone-like tissue was very distinct in surface morphology from the bone of the adjacent jaw, and as the tooth matured it changed from a coarse, woven appearance to one more like lamellar bone. Resorption bays were present in both the dentine and bony areas of teeth which were being shed. During development, the pedestal, which attaches the tooth to the jaw, formed as a separate calcification site and did not form a complete ring until fusion of its buccal surface with that of the overlying crown. A bony buccal lip formed early as part of the pedestal.  相似文献

Fine needle aspiration biopsy in uveal melanoma   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies were performed in a series of patients with uveal tumors. Cytopathologic examination established the correct diagnosis in 26 of 29 uveal melanomas. FNA biopsy was able to exclude the diagnosis of a malignant neoplasm in five nonmelanoma tumefactions. Histologic and FNA cytologic typing of melanomas as epithelioid or predominantly spindle cell showed good agreement, with the same classifications made in 14 of 18 cases. FNA biopsy specimens also proved to be adequate for DNA-content and cell-cycling studies. The cessation of cell cycling in successfully irradiated melanomas may be useful in establishing the postradiation status of tumors that have questionable growths after therapy, as was shown using FNA samples in three such cases in this study. The results of this study show that FNA biopsy is a useful diagnostic adjunct in patients with atypical lesions that require therapy.  相似文献

Anthropogenic activities on coastal watersheds increase nutrient concentrations of groundwater. As groundwater travels downslope it transports these nutrients toward the adjoining coastal water. The resulting nutrient loading rates can be significant because nutrient concentrations in coastal groundwaters may be several orders of magnitude greater than those of receiving coastal waters. Groundwater-borne nutrients are most subject to active biogeochemical transformations as they course through the upper 1 m or so of bottom sediments. There conditions favor anaerobic processes such as denitrification, as well as other mechanisms that either sequester or release nutrients. The relative importance of advective vs. regenerative pathways of nutrient supply may result in widely different rates of release of nutrients from sediments. The relative activity of denitrifiers also may alter the ratio of N to P released to overlying waters, and hence affect which nutrient limits growth of producers. The consequences of nutrient (particularly nitrate) loading include somewhat elevated nutrient concentrations in the watercolumn, increased growth of macroalgae and phytoplankton, reduction of seagrass beds, and reductions of the associated fauna. The decline in animals occurs because of habitat changes and because of the increased frequency of anoxic events prompted by the characteristically high respiration rates found in enriched waters.  相似文献

We inserted the terminal repeat (a sequence) of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) strain KOS into the tk gene of HSV-2 strain HG52 in order to assess the ability of the HSV-1 a sequence to provoke genome isomerization events in an HSV-2 background. We found that the HSV-1 a sequence was cleaved by the HSV-2 cleavage/packaging machinery to give rise to novel genomic termini. However, the HSV-1 a sequence did not detectably recombine with the HSV-2 a sequence. These results demonstrate that the viral DNA cleavage/packaging system contributes to a subset of genome isomerization events and indicate that the additional recombinational inversion events that occur during infection require sequence homology between the recombination partners.  相似文献

The influence of both single and concurrent administration of phenobarbital and clofibrate on hepatomegaly, cytochrome P450-depen-dent mixed function oxidase activities, and peroxisome proliferation in male rat liver have been studied. Both xenobiotics separately increase the liver :body weight ratio and their combined administration results in greater hepatomegaly than either compound alone. Both compounds induce NADPH-cytochrome c(P450) reductase activity and laurate ω- and ω-1-hydroxylase activities, but only phenobarbital induces pentoxyresorufin-O-de-alkylase. None of the drug treatments induced microsomal cytochrome b5. Phenobarbital did not cause peroxisome proliferation and inhibited the corresponding clofibrate-dependent proliferation. Taken collectively, our studies have demonstrated that concomitant treatment with phenobarbital and clofibrate are largely permissive with respect to the hepatic mixed function oxidase system but have opposing effects on the phenomenon of peroxisome proliferation in the same tissue.  相似文献

This communication describes a hydrogen peroxide (HOOH) induced chemiluminescence (CL) in an in vitro aromatic (proline) hydroxylation system. The reactive components of the system are ascorbic (AA), ethylene diamine tetraacetic disodium salt (EDTA), ferrous sulfate, and HOOH. The CL is (1) nearly dissipated within three minutes, (2) enhanced and/or sustained by proline and polylysine to a greater degree than by alanine, (3) partially inhibited by a,a' dipyridyl, EDTA, and ethanol, (4) most dependent upon the presence of Fe2+, AA, and HOOH. The in vitro proline hydroxylation system is more effective than ground state oxygen in terms of the CL produced and the percent of hydroxyproline formed.  相似文献

Lactic/glycolic acid polymers of several compositions were evaluated as the vehicle material for long term, controlled delivery of narcotic antagonists. L(+)-lactic, and glycolic acids-designated L(+), and G, respectively-were converted to polymers with weight ratios of 75 L(+)/25 G, 90 L(+)/10 G, and 100 L(+). Naltrexone base and naltrexone pamoate were incorporated into these polymers as a physical blend at several drug/polymer mass ratios. The mixtures were formed into small cylinders and spheres which were suitable for subcutaneous implantation by means of a trochar. In vitro screening was carried out followed by in vivo testing in mice. Radioactive assay and direct challenge with morphine using the tail-flick test were used to evaluate the drug release. The release rates approximated zero-order kinetics for most of the release period and the narcotic antagonist response to a challenge dose of morphine was maintained from one month to over six months depending on the formulation tested. Factors affecting narcotic antagonist delivery system design were polymer composition, narcotic antagonist solubility, drug loading level of the dosage form, use of a pure polymer coating around the drug/polymer matrix, and the surface area/unit volume of the dosage form.  相似文献
