Females of manyDrosophila species spread apart their wings prior to copulation. In the present study we found female wing spreading to provoke male copulation attempts inDrosophila virilis-group species, helping the males to attempt copulation when the female is ready to mate. The males of most species, however, rarely responded to female wing spreading by copulation attempt without licking the female genitalia before and/or after female wing spreading bout. Blocking the female genitalia (D. virilis, D. novamexicana) reduces males' tendency to attempt copulation after female wing spreading. In these, and most other species of the group, female wing spreading seems to be an efficient signal only when combined with stimuli from female genitalia.  相似文献

The attractiveness and the mating success of fertile (normal and brownie, br) and sterile (rudimentary testis, rt) Drosophila montana males were studied in female-choice experiments (one female + two males). The normal males courted the sterile rt males nearly as much as they courted the females, while they courted other males less frequently. The females required a long courtship with the rt males and accepted them as their mating partner less often than normal males. The courtship behaviour of normal, br and rt males was recorded in single pair situations with a normal female. The courtships of the males of all types proceeded in a similar manner, but the successful courtships of the rt males included more licking and touching than those of the normal and br males. The licking and touching periods are probably the critical phases at which the females are able to detect differences in male fertility.  相似文献

Chromosomal inversion polymorphism was characterized in Finnish Drosophila montana populations. A total of 14 polymorphic inversions were observed in Finnish D. montana of which nine had not been described before. The number of polymorphic inversions in each chromosome was not significantly different from that expected, assuming equal chance of occurrence in the euchromatic genome. There was, however, no correlation between the number of polymorphic inversions and that of fixed inversions in each chromosome. Therefore, a simple neutral model does not explain the evolutionary dynamics of inversions. Furthermore, in contrast to results obtained by others, no significant correlation was found between the two transposable elements (TEs) Penelope and Ulysses and inversion breakpoints in D. montana. This result suggests that these TEs were not involved in the creation of the polymorphic inversions seen in D. montana. A comparative analysis of D. montana and Drosophila virilis polytene chromosomes 4 and 5 was performed with D. virilis bacteriophage P1 clones, thus completing the comparative studies of the two species.  相似文献

Females of two Drosophila virilis group species, D. virilis and D. montana, have different requirements for the courting males. In the present study we have examined species differences in female receptivity and male courtship song requirement using females' acceptance signal instead of copulation for measuring female readiness to mate. Behavior of D. virilis and D. montana females and F1 and backcross hybrid females was observed in a single-pair courtships with D. virilis and D. montana males and normal and wingless (mute) F1 hybrid males. D. virilis females were very receptive and they commonly accepted the courtship of males unable to produce courtship song. D. montana females, on the contrary, had a low receptivity and these females accepted the courting male only after hearing his song. Interspecific F1 and backcross (BCm) females resembled D. virilis more than D. montana in their receptivity. These females, however, resembled D. montana in their song requirement. These findings suggest that female song requirement and female receptivity are determined by different genetic factors.  相似文献

To study the variation and consistency of song preferences in Drosophila virilis females, we played them species-specific song and songs with modified sound pulses and/or interpulse intervals on 3 consecutive days. Species-specific song was played again on the fourth day. All playbacks were done without the presence of males. About 62% of the females indicated their readiness to mate by spreading their wings in at least one of the trials. The proportion of the females responding to species-specific song was about twice that of the females responding to modified songs. The majority of females responded to only one song type, which suggests that the females varied in their preferences and that their preference windows were rather narrow. The females were consistent in their responsiveness to species-specific song played on 2 days. If the female responded to normal song during the first trial, the probability of her responding to the same song during the second trial increased by about 32%. The number of songs required by the females before responding in the two subsequent trials was also correlated within the females (repeatability 0.328). Repeatability of female preferences for male sexual traits is expected both in the viability and Fisherian models of sexual selection. The no-on-transient A (nonA) gene encodes a putative RNA-binding protein, and mutations in this gene are known to affect vision, male courtship song and viability in Drosophila melanogaster. Here we have sequenced the coding region of the nonA gene of Drosophila littoralis and compared it with those of Drosophila virilis and D. melanogaster. All portions of nonA appeared to be conserved between D. littoralis and D. virilis, while the 5' region of the gene of these two species showed high divergence from that of a more distantly-related species, D. melanogaster. The same was true for the glycine repeat regions. No significant deviation from neutrality was observed in the analysis of intraspecific nucleotide variation in 5' or 3' region of the nonA gene in D. littoralis population. Also, comparison of D. littoralis sequences with homologous sequence of D. virilis suggests that the gene is evolving neutrally in D. virilis group. Divergence of the 5' regions between D. virilis group species and D. melanogaster could be a result of positive selection, but this finding is obscured by the long divergence time of the species groups.  相似文献

An outstanding goal in speciation research is to trace the mode and tempo of the evolution of barriers to gene flow. Such research benefits from studying incipient speciation, in which speciation between populations has not yet occurred, but where multiple potential mechanisms of reproductive isolation (RI: i.e., premating, postmating‐prezygotic (PMPZ), and postzygotic barriers) may act. We used such a system to investigate these barriers among allopatric populations of Drosophila montana. In all heteropopulation crosses we found premating (sexual) isolation, which was either symmetric or asymmetric depending on the population pair compared. Postmating isolation was particularly strong in crosses involving males from one of the study populations, and while sperm were successfully transferred, stored, and motile, we experimentally demonstrated that the majority of eggs produced were unfertilized. Thus, we identified the nature of a PMPZ incompatibility. There was no evidence of intrinsic postzygotic effects. Measures of absolute and relative strengths of pre‐ and postmating barriers showed that populations differed in the mode and magnitude of RI barriers. Our results indicate that incipient RI among populations can be driven by different contributions of both premating and PMPZ barriers occurring between different population pairs and without the evolution of postzygotic barriers.  相似文献

The Drosophila virilis species group offers valuable opportunities for studying the roles of chromosomal re-arrangements and mating signals in speciation. The 13 species are divided into two subgroups, the montana and virilis 'phylads'. There is greater differentiation among species within the montana phylad in both karyotype and acoustic signals than exists among members of the virilis phylad. Drosophila montana is a divergent species which is included in the montana phylad. Here, we analyse the phylogeography of D. montana to provide a framework for understanding divergence of acoustic signals among populations. We analysed mitochondrial sequences corresponding to the cytochrome oxidase I and cytochrome oxidase II genes, as well as 16 microsatellite loci, from 108 lines of D. montana covering most of the species' range. The species shows a clear genetic differentiation between North American and Scandinavian populations. Microsatellite allele frequencies and mitochondrial DNA haplotypes gave significant FST values between populations from Canada, USA and Finland. A Bayesian analysis of population structure based on the microsatellite frequencies showed four genetically distinct groups, corresponding to these three populations plus a small sample from Japan. A network based on mitochondrial haplotypes showed two Finnish clades of very different shape and variability, and another clade with all sequences from North America and Japan. All D. montana populations showed evidence of demographic expansion but the patterns inferred by coalescent analysis differed between populations. The divergence times between Scandinavian and North American clades were estimated to range from 450,000 to 900,000 years with populations in Canada and the USA possibly representing descendants of different refugial populations. Long-term separation of D. montana populations could have provided the opportunity for differentiation observed in male signal traits, especially carrier frequency of the song, but relaxation of sexual selection during population expansion may have been necessary.  相似文献

We investigated the genetic architecture of courtship song and cuticular hydrocarbon traits in two phygenetically distinct populations of Drosophila montana. To study natural variation in these two important traits, we analysed within-population crosses among individuals sampled from the wild. Hence, the genetic variation analysed should represent that available for natural and sexual selection to act upon. In contrast to previous between-population crosses in this species, no major quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were detected, perhaps because the between-population QTLs were due to fixed differences between the populations. Partitioning the trait variation to chromosomes suggested a broadly polygenic genetic architecture of within-population variation, although some chromosomes explained more variation in one population compared with the other. Studies of natural variation provide an important contrast to crosses between species or divergent lines, but our analysis highlights recent concerns that segregating variation within populations for important quantitative ecological traits may largely consist of small effect alleles, difficult to detect with studies of moderate power.  相似文献

Two endemic Australian Drosophila species, D. birchii and D. serrata, have a copulatory courtship, i.e., the males court the female mainly during copulation. In the present study we found the males of both species to mount their prospective mating partners selectively, exhibiting both sex and species recognition. The males began to sing after mounting the female, and they often exhibited also postcopulatory displays typical to copulatory courtship. D. birchii and D. serrata females discriminated against males which did not sing during mounting/copulation, which suggests that the females utilize cryptic female choice. Our findings raise the question of how widespread a phenomenon cryptic female choice is in Drosophila species.  相似文献
