Summary Biodegradability of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) under anaerobic conditions was demonstrated using anaerobic river sediments and anaerobically treated activated sludge from a sewage treatment plant. PVA having molecular weights of 2000 and 14000 was over 60% biodegraded as determined by TOC.  相似文献

Mouse embryonic stem-derived cells were recently shown to differentiate into endothelial and smooth muscle cells. In the present study, we investigated whether human umbilical vein endothelium-derived cells retain the potential to differentiate into smooth muscle cells. Examination of biochemical markers, including basic calponin, SM22alpha, prostaglandin E synthase, von Willebrand factor, and PECAM-1, as well as cell contractility, showed that whereas endothelium-derived cells cultured with fibroblast growth factor can be characterized as endothelial cells, when deprived of fibroblast growth factor, a significant fraction differentiates into smooth muscle-like cells. Reapplication of fibroblast growth factor reversed this differentiation. Activin A was up-regulated in fibroblast growth factor-deprived, endothelium-derived cells; moreover, the inhibitory effects of exogenous follistatin and overexpressed Smad7 on smooth muscle-like differentiation confirmed that the differentiation was driven by activin A signaling. These findings indicate that when deprived of fibroblast growth factor, human umbilical vein endothelium-derived cells are capable of differentiating into smooth muscle-like cells through activin A-induced, Smad-dependent signaling, and that maintenance of the endothelial cell phenotype and differentiation into smooth muscle-like cells are reciprocally controlled by fibroblast growth factor-1 and activin A.  相似文献

The O,N-deacylated derivative (deON) and polysaccharide part (PS) from the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Escherichia coli C strain were separated by strongly basic anion-exchange chromatography (SAX) based on the differences in the number of charged phosphate and ethanolamine substituents. They were also successfully separated and characterized by capillary zone electrophoresis and subsequent ESI-ion trap-MS (CZE/ESI-IT-MS). The O-deacylated LPS (deO) presented as a broad peak in CZE/ESI-IT-MS. However, more than twelve species could be discriminated by an extracted ion electropherogram (EIE) and monitoring the species which have different numbers of phosphate and ethanolamine substituents on polysaccharide backbone.  相似文献

Drosophila prolongata, a member of the rhopaloa subgroup of the melanogaster species group, occurs in Southeast Asia. Drosophila prolongata is known to have unique and prominent sexual dimorphism, with extraordinarily thick and elongated forelegs only in males. Mating behavior of D. prolongata is also characteristic: males perform “leg vibration” in their courtship toward females, in which the elongated forelegs play an important role. Comparisons with closely related species suggest that these morphological and behavioral traits have evolved rapidly after the divergence of D. prolongata. In the present study, variation in morphological and behavioral traits was examined among D. prolongata strains derived from single females collected in their natural habitats. Significant variations were detected in the size of various body parts, aggressiveness of interactions between males, and mating behavior. However, no obvious relationship was observed between morphological and behavioral traits. These results suggested that genetic factors contribute to the variation in morphological and behavioral traits in D. prolongata. The strains characterized in this study are useful for studies on the genetic mechanisms underlying the evolution of characteristic traits in D. prolongata.  相似文献

Drosophila (Sophophora) subpulchrella Takamori and Watabe, sp. nov., of the D. suzukii subgroup in the D. melanogaster species group, is described from Japan and southern China, and compared with its sibling species, D. pulchrella Tan et al. distributed in the Yun‐Gui Highland, south‐western China. The results of cross‐experiments show a complete pre‐mating isolation between D. subpulchrella and D. pulchrella.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism is often derived from sexual selection. In sexually dimorphic Drosophila species, exaggerated male structures are used for specific behaviors in male-to-male competition or courtship toward females. In Drosophila prolongata, a member of the melanogaster species group, males have enlarged forelegs whereas females do not. However, the adaptive role of the enlarged forelegs is unclear because little is known about the behavior of D. prolongata. In this study, the courtship behavior of D. prolongata was investigated in comparison with closely related species. Males of D. prolongata use their forelegs in a specific behavior, “leg vibration”, in which the male vigorously vibrates the female’s abdomen by extending his forelegs from in front of her. Leg vibration was observed immediately before “attempting copulation”, indicating that it has an adaptive role in the mating process. In contrast, leg vibration was not observed in closely related species. Because the large forelegs are necessary to accomplish leg vibration, it was suggested that the sexual dimorphism of D. prolongata forelegs is currently under the influence of sexual selection in courtship behavior.  相似文献

The effects of temperature and salinity on the concentration ratios of strontium (Sr) to calcium (Ca) within the sagittal otoliths of elvers of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, were studied by spot analysis using a wavelength dispersive X-ray electron microprobe. A total of 340 elvers were used: 100 elvers were reared for 15 days under various salinity conditions (freshwater, one-third seawater, two-thirds seawater and pure seawater at 22 °C; 240 elvers were reared for 58 days under various water temperature conditions (12, 17, 22, 27 °C) in either freshwater or pure seawater. Otolith Sr/Ca ratios were found to be positively correlated with water salinity. On the other hand, the Sr/Ca ratios were not found to be significantly different among the various temperature groups. The above results strongly suggest that the physiological mechanism of incorporation of Sr and Ca within the otolith of an eurythermal fish, Japanese eel, does not change within this range of temperatures (12–27 °C).  相似文献

The concept of supramolecular chirality has assumed increasing importance in association with the development of supramolecular chemistry over the last two decades. In chiral crystals, 2 1 helical molecular assemblies are frequently observed as key motifs. Helical handedness of the 2 1 assemblies, however, has not been determined from the mathematical or crystallographical viewpoints. In this context, we have proposed two new concepts, three-axial chirality and tilt chirality. On the basis of the concepts, we describe supramolecular chirality and determine the handedness of 2 1 assemblies that are composed of relatively complicated molecules with multiple stereogenic centers such as brucine, bile acids, and cinchona alkaloids as well as those of simple molecules.  相似文献
