Increasing nest survival by excluding predators is a goal of many bird conservation programs. However, new exclosure projects should be carefully evaluated to assess the potential risks of disturbance. We tested the effectiveness of predator exclosure fences (hereafter, fences) for nests of critically endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum floridanus) at a dry prairie site (Three Lakes; 2015–2018) and a pasture site (the Ranch; 2015–2016) in Osceola County, Florida, USA. We installed fences at nests an average of 8 days after the start of incubation, and nest abandonment after fence installation was rare (2 of 149 installations). Predation was the leading cause of failure for unfenced nests at both sites (48–73%). At Three Lakes, nest cameras revealed that mammals and snakes were responsible for 61.5% and 38.5% of predation events, respectively, at unfenced nests. Fences reduced the daily probability of predation (0.016 for fenced nests vs. 0.074 for unfenced nests). The probability that a fenced nest would survive from discovery to fledging was more than double that of unfenced nests (60.4% vs. 27.7%). However, we found no difference in daily nest survival at the Ranch between the year before nests were fenced (2015; 0.874) and the year when all but one nest were fenced (2016; 0.867) because red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) were responsible for 86% of predation events at fenced nests at the Ranch. The use of cameras at fenced nests revealed that site‐specific differences in nest predators explained variation in fence efficiency between sites. Our fence design may be useful for other species of grassland birds, but site‐specific predator communities and species‐specific response of target bird species to fences should be assessed before installing fences at other sites.  相似文献

Limited proteolysis of gizzard myosin by alpha-chymotrypsin converted the heavy chain doublet pattern, seen by gel electrophoresis, to a single band. Light chain degradation was not observed and only minor cleavage occurred at other heavy chain sites. Using a polyclonal antibody raised against a unique sequence from the slower-migrating heavy chain (SM1) it was shown that this conversion was due to the loss of a peptide approximately 4000 daltons from the C terminus of SM1. The peptide was isolated and sequenced, and the cleavage site was identified between phenylalanine 1943 and alanine 1944. Addition of antibody before protease protected SM1 from cleavage. The following changes were observed (a) the Mg2(+)-dependence of actin-activated ATPase of digested phosphorylated myosin was altered and activity was relatively high at low Mg2+ levels, i.e. similar to phosphorylated heavy meromyosin; (b) the KCl dependence of Mg2(+)-ATPase of the digested myosin, particularly the phosphorylated form, showed an altered pattern consistent with the stabilization of the 6 S conformation; (c) the tendency for aggregation was increased by proteolysis of phosphorylated myosin. These results show that the C-terminal region of a gizzard myosin heavy chain can modify some of the properties of myosin. It is suggested that the observed modifications reflect an enhanced tendency of the digested myosin to aggregate.  相似文献

The effect of neurotensin on submaximally-stimulated hepatobiliary and pancreatic secretion was studied in 6 healthy subjects. An intravenous infusion of neurotensin 1.4 ± 0.3 pmol/kg/min, designed to reproduce plasma neurotensin immunoreactivity levels within the physiological range, produced a significant increase in pancreatic bicarbonate output. Plasma concentrations of pancreatic polypeptide rose by 83 ± 16 pmol/l and were associated with a small reduction in trypsin, but no significant change in bilirubin outputs.  相似文献

Summary Cytokinin levels in both attached and detached mature leaves of poplar (Populus x robusta) increase transiently after short periods of exposure to red light. The degree and rapidity of response seems dependent on the physiological condition of the leaves. The cytokinin, 6-(2-hydroxybenzyl)amino purine riboside, specifically increases after red light treatment. Diurnal changes of leaf cytokinins occur, with a pronounced peak of activity being present at daybreak.  相似文献

We isolated 20 anonymous nuclear loci (8556 bp in total) from the Taiwan Hwamei (Garrulax taewanus), an endemic songbird of Taiwan. A panel of nine to 15 individuals with unknown relationship was used to characterize polymorphism of these loci. We identified 46 single nucleotide polymorphic sites (SNPs) in 15 polymorphic loci. Frequency of SNPs was one per every 186 bp in average. Nucleotide diversity, θ, ranged from 0.00054 to 0.00371 per locus. We also tested cross‐species applicability of these loci on 17 species from eight different passerine families. All 20 loci could be successfully amplified (ranged from one to 16 species, mean = 7.9 species).  相似文献

Nitric oxide (NO) has been implicated in both the pathogenesis of and protection from NMDA receptor-mediated neuronal injury. This apparent paradox has been attributed to alternate redox states of nitrogen monoxide, whereby, depending on the redox milieu, nitrogen monoxide can be neuroprotective via nitrosation chemistry or react with superoxide to form secondary toxic species. In our murine mixed cortical cell culture system, the NONOate-type NO donors diethylamine/NO complex sodium (Dea/NO), (Z)-[N-(3-ammoniopropyl)-N-(n-propyl)amino]diazen-1-ium++ +-1,2-diolate (Papa/NO), and spermine/NO complex sodium (Sper/NO), as well as the S-nitrosothiols S-nitroso-L-glutathione (GSNO) and S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D,L-penicillamine (SNAP) (NO+ equivalents), decreased NMDA-induced neuronal injury in a concentration-dependent manner. 8-Bromo-cyclic GMP did not mimic the inhibitory effects of the donors, suggesting that the neuroprotection was not the result of NO-stimulated neuronal cyclic GMP production. Furthermore, neuronal injury induced by exposure of cultures to H2O2 was not altered by the presence of Dea/NO, indicating the absence of a direct antioxidant effect. NONOates did, however, reduce NMDA-stimulated uptake of 45Ca2+, whereas high potassium-induced 45Ca2+ accumulation, a measurement of entry via voltage-gated calcium channels, was unaffected. The parallel reduction of 45Ca2+ accumulation and NMDA neurotoxicity by NONOates mimicked that seen with an NMDA receptor antagonist. Electrochemical measurements of NO via an NO-sensitive electrode demonstrated that neuroprotective concentrations of all donors produced appreciable amounts of NO over the 5-min time frame. Determination of the formation of NO+ equivalents, as assessed by N-nitrosation of 2,3-diaminonaphthylene, revealed little or no observable N-nitrosation by Sper/NO, GSNO, and SNAP with significant N-nitrosation observed by Papa/NO and Dea/NO. However, addition of ascorbate (400 microM) effectively prevented the nitrosation of 2,3-diaminonaphthylene produced by Dea/NO and Papa/NO without altering their neuroprotective properties or their effects on 45Ca2+ accumulation. Present results indicate that the intrinsic NO/NO+ characteristics of NO donor compounds may not be a good predictor of their ability to inhibit NMDA receptor-mediated neurotoxicity at the cellular level.  相似文献

During an annual physical examination, a middle-aged adult female olive baboon (Papio anubis) in the time-mated breeding colony at the Biologic Resources Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago was found to have a high serum calcium value (> 12 mg/dl). To determine the cause of the hypercalcemia, additional diagnostic tests, including thoracic and abdominal radiographs and a parathyroid panel (parathyroid hormone (PTH), ionized calcium, and parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTH-rp) assays), were performed. The radiographs did not reveal lesions suggestive of neoplasia. A parathyroid panel was obtained twice. Both times the PTH (23.4 and 46.4 pmol/L, normal = 2.91 to 4.57 pmol/L) and ionized calcium (1.68 and 2.10 mmol/L, normal = 1.31 to 1.37 mmol/L) were increased above values for adult females with normal calcium concentration. A tentative diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism was made. After a gamma-radiation scan and magnetic resonance imaging of the neck were done, exploratory surgery was performed to identify and remove the affected gland. After gland removal, the baboon's serum calcium, PTH (1.6 pmol/L), and ionized calcium (1.59 mmol/L) values decreased. Results of histologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of benign solitary parathyroid adenoma.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: The information model chosen to store biological data affects the types of queries possible, database performance, and difficulty in updating that information model. Genetic sequence data for pharmacogenetics studies can be complex, and the best information model to use may change over time. As experimental and analytical methods change, and as biological knowledge advances, the data storage requirements and types of queries needed may also change. RESULTS: We developed a model for genetic sequence and polymorphism data, and used XML Schema to specify the elements and attributes required for this model. We implemented this model as an ontology in a frame-based representation and as a relational model in a database system. We collected genetic data from two pharmacogenetics resequencing studies, and formulated queries useful for analysing these data. We compared the ontology and relational models in terms of query complexity, performance, and difficulty in changing the information model. Our results demonstrate benefits of evolving the schema for storing pharmacogenetics data: ontologies perform well in early design stages as the information model changes rapidly and simplify query formulation, while relational models offer improved query speed once the information model and types of queries needed stabilize.  相似文献
